There are many good ones to pick from, honestly. But two that really stick with me are Donald Duck and the Mummy's Ring ("The Mummies! The Mummies! They're sitting up in their cases, eatin' my sandwich!"), and Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold, although it's not all Barks. It's a bit of a shame Fantagraphics didn't start in chronological order, as I'd love to have those early Barks tales in a nice full-color hardcover edition. Hopefully they'll be coming up soon.

I haven't read all of them, but...
Long story: The Mines of King Solomon
The details in the art & story, the quick pacing, the sheer scale of the adventure...SO much like Rosa's epics, and actually better than some of them. :)
Short story: MANY good ones. Off the top of my head, The Duck in the Iron Pants.

I LOVED "DUCK IN IRON PANTS" I remember how it sparkle my imagination when I was a wee lad :D
However "Gladstone terrible secret" must be my favorite ten-pager.
The punch-line is just beatuyfull (that blank expresion on the duck faces...), and same goes for the whole part of Gladstone asking Scrooge for money. This story has some best Gladstone-luck jokes BTW.

I have read only about 50% of the Duck comics by Barks up until earlier this year, but about a month ago I decided to read every single Disney comic by Barks in chronological order. The last one I read was The Gilded Man (from September 1952), so I'm not even halfway through with this project of mine. My 5 favourite Barks stories from 1943 to 1952 are:
1. Vacation Time
2. The Old Castle's Secret
3. Only a Poor Old Man
4. Dangerous Disguise
5. Christmas on Bear Mountain
Btw, I find The Golden Helmet (which a lot of people think is one of the best stories written and drawn by Barks) tremendously overrated.

I reckon Vacation Time is his best story. My grouping would also include The Old Castle's Secret, The Golden Helmet, Back to the Yukon, Letters to Santa and Tralla La.
I also reckon the best time creative periods for Barks were the late '40s to just shy of the mid-'50s, and then a few years into the '60s when he seemed to hit a stride again with a bunch of Scrooge tales. Those of that later period may not have have been as tightly plotted as the earlier classics but were outrageous and entertaining and had a lot of neat ideas.

I have read 100% of Carl Barks' duck stories. (Barks also drew one Mickey Mouse story, one Andy Panda story and several Barney Bear stories.) I have a copy of almost every Disney comic from 1958 to the present and I have the huge boxed set of Another Rainbow's Carl Barks Library and every issue of The Carl Barks Library In Color plus several of the Carl Barks volumes published by Fantagraphics. Considering how many of the comic books were reprints, I probably have at least seven different printings of every Disney story Carl Barks ever did. My favorite: A Christmas For Shacktown, published in December of 1951 (Four Color Comics #367, January 1952). Donald, Daisy and the Junior Woodchucks are unable to raise enough money to provide toys and a Christmas dinner for all the poor kids who live in run-down little houses in Shacktown. Donald asks Scrooge to donate and Scrooge is outraged that they want to buy "a silly useless toy train" for the kids. I do not want to say any more about the story because I do not want to spoil it for anyone who has not read it, but it's my favorite and I encourage everyone to get a copy. (And the publishers will be happy too.)

For me:
Donald: "Vacation Time" -- the art, the story, the EVERYTHING. This is how Donald adventure stories should be done. I'd choose Lost in the Andes if this didnt exist, but honestly, I love everything about it.
Scrooge: "Only a Poor Old Man" -- layered like an onion. The first is the best. The only reason Old Castle's Secret isn't here is because, honestly, it's only a Donald story by logo.
10 Pager: Delivery Dillema. I know this is late Barks and is probably contentious but its one of the few duck stories that makes me cackle like a banshee from start to finish, thus making it a personal favorite. It's cynical as heck, knows that it's a completely cliched laff riot, never lets up even once and just GOES with it. Kite Weather is the only other Barks story that's had be flat on my behind from laughter like this.

I first read Golden Helmet in the Gemstone Barks/Rosa TPB containing it and The Lost Charts of Colombus. The story struck me in a way that no others really have at the time, and I've read it at this point possibly more than any other. My favorite 10-pager would probably have to be Flipism.

Carl Barks wrote the story that became the 1938 Donald Duck cartoon Self Control, in which Donald tries to control his temper with the help of a radio psychologist. In 1945, Barks wrote and drew the Donald Tames His Temper comic-book story. In the cartoon Cured Duck, released in October of 1945, Donald, with the help of a machine, really does cure his temper.....for a while. Did Barks' 1945 story borrow from that cartoon...or did the cartoon borrow from Barks?

Barks was a gag man at the studio working on Donald shorts around that time so its quite possible that he was inspired by the '38 short. Another similar one is Barks' Truant officer story which closely mirrors a DD short. The titles escape me off the top of my head.

I don't know if I can pick a best, but I can pick my favorites.
The first Barks story that really grabbed me was The Seven Cities of Cibolla.
The first Barks story I can remember reading was Wishing Well.
I've always loved his Christmas stories, especially letter to Santa.

Veeery hard.
"Statuesque Spendthrifts" is the first 10-pager that comes to mind, but as I now write I remember "The Great Duckburg Frog-Jumping Contest" and "Donald`s Love Letters"...
Probably "Vacation Time" when it comes to long stories. That one is not only very entertaining, but also IMO the most impressive story Barks made.
Don`t know if these are the "best", but they are certainly among my favourites. Then again, I might remember altogether different stories tomorrow. As we all know; Mr. Barks made hundreds of wonderful stories.
