Somewhere along the line I guess I too assumed that Glomgold was born in Scotland, but made his fortune in South Africa.

Well, I have an opinion that F.Glomgold is son of boer and English traveler/migrant (outlander in one of Boer's republics). I prefer to think he grew up on his parent's farm with some other siblings but in young age he prefer to went to the towns or diamond mines to have an easy money then working on family farm.
This is my really own view on this problem. May be Glomgold was a Cape boer or son of English migrants. His arrive to SA from Scotland is possible too - we can't say exactly who is he. Do someone have a proof to all of these theories?

There is no way to "prove" Glomgold's ancestry and country of birth, as Barks never defined them.

Though it is fascinating to see how fans fill in the blanks for themselves.

Haha, well to give the honest truth, I didn't know that he had anything to do with Africa to tell the truth until later. I apparently forgot all about him being Scottish in Duck Tales, so when I first saw him in the comics, for some reason thought that he was Irish. It made sense to me (the good ol' Irish vs. Scottish thing going on). Even now, for whatever reason I still get Irish vibes off him when he appears in the comics of for no reason at all.
