I was wondering, what is Chief O'Hara's first name? An internet search lists Seamus and John the most often, but I'm not really convinced without a comic source. Seeing as you guys know these things quite well (see the Beagle Boys without mask thread, e.g.), do you know any comics where Chief O'Hara is mentioned by his first name? And is it really Seamus?

I don't think there is any "official" name. I would guess any name chosen as "official" should be that one name used by Gottfredson most. I doubt that was "Seamus". Personally, I don't remember any first name being used in a Gottfredson story. The John and Seamus names may both have come from Murray-drawn stories.

The name Seamus was first used by Byron Erickson in modern stories.
The name "John" was added to Wikipedia in 2005 by a vandal??who also added various fake, joking additions (like made-up garbage about O'Hara's sex life!). A Wikipedia editor eliminated these additions, but missed "John," which stayed in Wikipedia for years... to the point where a bunch of other reference pages ineptly picked it up.
"John" should not be canon.
I believe at least one 1940s or 1950s story gave O'Hara a different first name, but I haven't been able to find it. I seem to recall it was an Irish-sounding name, though I can't recall more than that.

"Seamus" appears in e.g. WDT 1 as now reported on Inducks. In that story O'Hara is seen with a female character who calls him by his first name.

Italian name of Chief O'Hara is "Commissario Basettoni". Romano Scarpa gave him the first name "Adamo" (Adam), which is still use in Italian stories when his wife Petulia calls him.

I think Seamus is the most logical name for Chief O Hara because he is Irish and Seamus is an Irish name.

Of course. He invented O'Hara.

First, I would like to apologize that this question has nothing to do with Chief O'Hara's first name, but this is something I have been wondering for a while.
Does anyone know if the 1960's Batman series' Chief O'Hara was modeled after Gottfredson's Chief O'Hara? In the series he, of course has the same name, is Irish, a little heavy set, and even uses the word "begorrah", which I seem to recall in a story or two.
Or, was there a Chief O'Hara in the Batman comics?
Just thought a Chief O'Hara thread would be a good place for this question.

Yeah, the similarities between Chief O'Hara and Chief O'Hara struck me as well, the first time I saw the Batman series. According to Wikipedia, the Batman version was created specifically for the TV series and only later was used in the comics.
Whether or not the Batman version was inspired by the Mouse version... I suspect the only one who'd know for certain is the man who developed the Batman show: Lorenzo Semple Jr. I've tracked him down to http://blogs.indiewire.com/reelgeezers (and possibly http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lorenzo-Semple-Jr/116429061732263) if you want to ask him.

Chief O' Hara had a son? I didn't know that. Is O' Hara supposed to be his first name or last name?

In Italy, O'Hara is "Basettoni" and is first name is "Adamo" (Adam).
Anyway, these are from Walsh and Gottfredson's Mickey's Dangerous Double (1950s).

O'Hara mentions his wife (recurrent character in Italy called "Petulia").

It would be nice to see more stories with O'Hara as a family man, I think, as many of the characters in the comics are more often bachelors. But Seamus fits very well for a irish chief and that is the name I probably would use myself.
