It isn't likely to be a translation error, because Freddy (Danish) submits all his self-written stories to Sanoma in English, and the translators on Sanoma's staff know English well enough. I'll have to read it again to give my opinion. But, yes, your confusion rings a bell with me, as I remember being confused after reading it, and not being at all satisfied with the history element of the story.
