Topic: Quality of Boom-Comics

I disagree with most of the criticism about the Boom handling of Disney-Comics. In my opinion the Boom-output is not so bad: They offered to us Casty, the best Mickey-author of our times (he also created great covers for WDC!), the Doubleduck-series are very funny and up to time, "Wizards of Mickey" is no revelation but it isn´t bad stuff either (well, I agree you have to forget the "Ultraheroes" but also Gemstone and Gladstone had weak stories in their program). Printing the sixth time Barks and Rosa would be annoying and those who would like to read them can acquire all their stories very cheaply on Ebay (just have a look for a story on the Inducks database and buy the item which you are looking for on Ebay for two or three dollars). I would suggest one title which publicates the classic stuff, specificly stories of Barks till now unpublished in English (some of the Woodchuck-stories inked by Jippes, also the Barks-Jippes version of King Scrooge the First which is superior to Strobl´s) and the new Van Horn stories (I miss them very much and therefore WDC 700 was a highlight for me). The others should give to us the best Dutch, the best Danish (e.g. Jensen/Andersen and the TNT series) and the best Italian material (the classic Scarpa, Casty and so on).

I think I agree with just about everything you said. "Ultra Heroes" was never my favorite, but hey, it's gone now. "Double Duck" I like a lot (Obviously, as you can see in my avatar); the scene where Donald gets out of a jam by calling the police and telling them his car is double parked, leading to their instantaneous appeareance, was one of the funniest things in years.
Casty is awesome, like the biologically impossible lovechild of Gottfredson and Romano Scarpa.
I agree with picking up the Jippes reworkings of Barks, though, and STRONGLY wish they'd start printing Willian Van Horn's backlog of stories that haven't made it to North America yet.

Double Duck is *okay,* but for it to be the ONLY DD stories we get? Not so okay. Especially now that there's a devoted MM title, I don't see why they don't stop treating WDC&S as a de facto MM book and instead use it as a repository for "classic"-style stories. I'm not saying I want endless Barks/Rosa reprints, but there are, of course, jillions of classic stories that have never been published in English. And yeah, it would be beyond awesome to FINALLY see those Van Horn stories.

Daan Jippes did his own version of King Scrooge The First? I didn't know that. I have the Tony Strobl version in Uncle Scrooge #345. I agree that they should print the classic stories that haven't been printed. They should bring Donald Duck back to Walt Disney's Comics and Stories. Especially now that Mickey Mouse and Friends is back. They should also go back to publishing regular Uncle Scrooge stories in Uncle Scrooge and give Duck Tales it's own comic book. It is cool that they brought back Darkwing Duck and it might even be cooler if they brought back Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers. If subscriptions weren't so expensive and there was a place that sold Disney Comics in my city I would probably buy them but sadly neither of those are options for me.

Boom!'s subscriptions are expensive, but you are paying for excellent packing with each issue mailed. 2 hard card envelopes with a backer board and bag..... Gemstone used to send my $7.00/$8.00 Scrooges in a thin envelope that the postman would bend in half! I called Gemstone once about it and they stated they couldn't stamp the comics with 'do not bend,' because the usps would not allow it on bulk business mail. Needless to say, Gemstone folded soon after.

Can't say I'm too pleased with Boom's output so far:
Darkwing Duck- has been a pleasant surprise
Uncle Scrooge- the stories feel...ummm..."cheap"....I can't describe what I feel, but it's like they lack quality
Donald- The DD stories are above average most of the time, but I too would like some variety and not just DD all the time
Ultraheroes- Big dissapointment
Wizards of Mickey- Meh...could have been better, but not terrible
Comics and Stories- The Casty stories and art are pretty good, but the backup stories have been short and terrible for the most part

I feel pretty confident in stating that Gemstone going under had nothing to do with a postman folding your Scrooge comics.

Cant buy boom products thru previews (for non us/canada residents), which was never a problem with gemstone. So boom gets a thumb down from me.

They have discovered the beautiful pencil layouts of Barks for this story which therefore could be inked by Daan Jippes as the JW-Stories. It would be nice to get a special with both the Bark´s pencils and the inks of Jippes.

Hi Arie! Welcome back. Do you live in Canada now? or are you just visiting? Or, is your internet connection code just being misread?

That is cool Kurt. I wonder if Daan Jippes is doing all of the Barks stories that were previously drawn by Tony Strobl.

Good for you. For the benefit of the crowd, it was a joke that you didn't get.

He already has! "King Scrooge The First" was the last comic in question.

Sorry. I interpreted your remark as coming from a hysterical fanboy. Glad to know I was completely mistaken.
