I have a book about geographical place names in Germany, however, where the old German personal name Per[c]htger is given as explanation. And Old High German gadum, gadem was the word for a fenced housed, according to that book. Likely, the name referred thus to the house of the first settler. The article on the town in the German Wikipedia also points to the eventuality of a connection of the name with the Germanic goddess Perchta.
