Quote from user: Lars JensenIf Coolwater and you don't like Lockman's stories, you don't like them. In your case, GeoX, I am, however, surprised that anyone would feel that specific way about Lockman's stuff; intellectually, I can (barely) understand people having problems with a story where Grandma Duck and Dumbo fight Br'er Fox, but how could it ever be "leaden mediocrity"?!
You can only "barely" understand that? Hmm. That stuff certainly makes ME cringe, but it wasn't really what I was thinking of. I was thinking of things like this and this.

I'll write an entry about Lockman one of these days. Hopefully that will clarify my opinions. Incidentally, you did something weird with your links so firefox declares them "unsafe;" ergo, I don't know what your Lockman exemplars are. I'll bet that's the same problem Coolwater was having.

What's wrong with the inducks? When I try to log in I get that "unsafe" message as well...

If I am correct, 16 of the 40 4-tier H-code comics with at least 16 pages published after 1989 for the first time have never been released outside Netherlands. Not even once. Is there any reason for that?

One completely different thing: the future of traditional (4-tier) adventure Disney comics. It really looks like the new golden age of adventure Disney comics that began around 1990 has come to an end. Rosa retired. William Van Horn has not made a long comic since 1999, now he prefers 10-pagers. Marco Rota is already 68. The Blocks have only made adventure comics for Gladstone and Gemstone - both have gone out of business. Scarpa died in 2005. Jippes has not made a long Duck comic that was not a Barks remake and by now he remade all of the comics written but not drawn by the Master.

What can we hope for?
-We can hope that Marco Rota makes at least a few more long comics.
-William Van Horn's return to adventure comics (this is a huge dream for me!).
-Egmont hires the Blocks (I know they wrote a few short comics for the company but never a long one).
-Jippes decides to make long comics completely on his own.
-Noel van Horn returns to write his own comics + he makes comics with the Ducks too.
-We can hope that Arild Midthun continues to be really good and that he gets good scripts.
-We can hope for a completely new great artist/writer.

Quote from user: Robb_KSorry, it was this 47-page story by Jan that was the longest: Donald Duck Dubbelalbum 14 (1987) De oudste auto ter wereld. But, I guess we can't claim it as a "Dutch" story, as he is no Nederlander, and also, he drew that album for Ehapa, despite mainly working for Oberon at the time.
My claim of "longest Dutch story" is a story made for Oberon (starting with code H). It has nothing to do with the nationality of it's creator. He can come from Tasmania and live in the States, as long as he's employed by the Dutch it's a Dutch story.

Quote from user: BenceH 90182: Excluded. Reaons: Jose Carioca (not the classic one as by Don Rosa but the "new" leading character as in the Brazilian stories) + Art: José Colomer Fonts.
You're wrong. This is indeed the classical version. I don't own the story, but a lot of classic Carioca was reprinted in the Donald Duck in that time (1982-1985). There are 34 B-stories printed in The Netherlands. 19 Tarzan, Mulan, Hercules or Hunback of the Notre Dame stories, 9 Duck stories, 5 Mouse stories and 1 7-Dwarf story. That's no Joe Carioca stories AT ALL. Convinced?
Quote from user: BenceHC DD 1992X02Y: I am still on the fence with this one. Is this a real comic? Who is the writer?
The Dutch editors made it at the time. It consists entirely of used Barks panels with some other used art (stickers, like a still from The Three Caballero's). It is a real comic.
Quote from user: BenceH 92020: Excluded. Barks remake. I counted the remake of the original made by Jippes.
You really should include it. Remakes can differ, and if I'm not mistaken this one does. Of count them together.
Quote from user: BenceH 94145: Included. Ben Verhagen. (Seriously, even if the story is awful, Verhagen really knows how to draw!)
Don't you mean another story. I told you I don't own this one. Where's the "story is awful" part?
Quote from user: BenceH 99103: I am still on the fence with this one. Is it really that good? It does not sound like a traditional Duck comic + it was drawn by the Comicup studio. (Of course I have not read it and you have so you probably know more about this one than me. )
Hmm... now you're gonna get a problem with your list. All the Dutch Comicup stories ARE traditional Duck comics. And maybe I told the story a little wrong. This is the real plot:
It's New Year's Eve and Donald, broke as usual, needs to buy a present for Daisy. He uses his money to grab from a grab bag, and buys a brick from an 800-year old castle in Scotland. He's angry for buying a brick and throws it broken. A ghost comes out, and after being terrified it's the year 1999, he tells his story. Just over 800 years ago he was a knight and had a nice castle and his own magician. And an onnoying neighbor. The magician created a bomb, very powerful, to use it on the neighbor, and it doesn't work. Only after a minute it works and blows up a small part of the room. This convinces the knight it works, and soon there is a much, much bigger bomb. Unfortuately, it doesn't work. The magician tells why: the bomb is so much bigger, it takes 800 years to go off, and it will destroy the whole of Scotland at the start of the far-off year of... 2000. The Ducks go to Scotland and back to get the bomb, but nw they only need to make it harmless. The ghost takes it with him in a rocket for rich people who could see the year 2000 in space, and we get to see next, is the best firework ever.
Quote from user: BenceH 29049: Included. All those cameos look interesting.
Good idea. But... never pick a story because of the cameos! That would make my story immediately fit in here. I'm planning to put in cameos of most of the people on this list:
Carl en Gare Barks, me, Gyro's helper, Grandma and Gus, the Grand Mogul, Rockerduck, Brigitta MacBridge, Jubal Pomp, Fethry Duck, Ludwig von Drake,
Robb_K, Bolivar, Clerky, Miss Quackfaster, Jones, Glittering Goldie, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Walt Disney, Herbert, Joe the diner owner from the Barks one-pagers (just for fun), Longhorn Tallgrass, Herman the Hermite, Professor Mollicule and Sleezy, Ome Dries (Dutch character, owner of the local fopshop), Azure Blue and Sharky, McShisel, Lusky, Opu Nui, the woman on the scooter from WDC 268, Aunt Drussila, the curator of the Duckburg museum with teo square hens, the statue of Cornelius Coot, the sceptics' club, Bella Duck, Bum Bum Ghigno, Chip and Dale, Baptist, I-176, the Beagle Boys, Perry the Platypus, Black Pete and Trudy, Phineas and Ferb, Candace, Dr. Doofenshmirtz, Isabella, beared man form H 88069, Newton, Clara Cluck, Clarabella Cow, Hard Haid Moe, Rockhead Rooster, the Big and Li'l Bad Wolfs, and the Three Pigs. If anyone has a request, just say it. I might not be able to use all the character I just named.
Quote from user: Bence2010-099: I am still on the fence with this one. Is it that bad? It was drawn by Gulien + the Barks reference looks nice on the first page.
If it's drawn by Gulien, you usually dan't expect much from it anyway, and most recent Dutch stories are worse than the older ones. But if you want to include it - why not.

Quote from user: sirredkneeWhat's wrong with the inducks? When I try to log in I get that "unsafe" message as well...
Same here. Does anyone know?

Quote from user: BenceWe can hope that Marco Rota makes at least a few more long comics.
I think he will. But in 10 years, nothing.
Quote from user: Bence-William Van Horn's return to adventure comics (this is a huge dream for me!).
He made adventure comics? Well, why not. But don't forget: Van Horn is 71.
Quote from user: BenceEgmont hires the Blocks (I know they wrote a few short comics for the company but never a long one).
Good idea, but will they do it?
Quote from user: BenceJippes decides to make long comics completely on his own.
That's not going to happen. He's busy with Havank. He has made some new stories tho, recently.
Quote from user: Bence-Noel van Horn returns to write his own comics + he makes comics with the Ducks too.
I don't know his comics. I can't say anything about that.
Quote from user: Bence-We can hope that Arild Midthun continues to be really good and that he gets good scripts.
Yeah, good idea. Let's all hope for that! Did you know he makes scripts himself, too?
Quote from user: Bence-We can hope for a completely new great artist/writer.
I suppose I could write some stories when I'm older, but not for now. For now it's only fan-fiction. And McDuck Menu could illustrate them. But I won't become a professional Disney artist full time. It really is fun to do, but I'm destined for other things. But who knows?
For now, only destiny can decide if there will be a second Barks. But what's maybe more realistic, is the end of Disney comics. We need to have a topic for that. Maybe two: one on when it will be and how it will go, and another one in case of emergency when it happens.

Quote from user: Dutch Duckfan Down UnderDon't you mean another story. I told you I don't own this one. Where's the "story is awful" part?
No, I meant since neither you nor me know this comic, we do not know how good the story is, and even if the story is mediocre (or bad or awful) it should be included since the art by Ben Verhagen is great.

Quote from user: Dutch Duckfan Down UnderHe made adventure comics?
Well, with "adventure comics" I meant comics with 16 pages or more (and 4-tier), and yes he did:
1989: AR 148 - The Whistling Ghost
1990: AR 154 - The Amazon Queen (written by John Lustig)
1991: KJD 005 - A Tuft Luck Tale (3-tier)
1991: KU 3090b - No Room for Human Error (3-tier, written by John Lustig)
1993: D 92207 - The Black Moon
1994: D 94003 - Horsing Around With History (written by Barks)
1995: D 92206 - The Pauper's Glass
1996: AR 216 - The Hauntland Treasure
1997: D 96365 - The Saphead Factor
1998: D 98154 - Secrets
2000: D 99051 - Fools Of The Trade
2000: D 99053 - Travails (sequel of Secrets)
2001: D 99292 - The Utter Limits (written by Gary Leach)

Quote from user: Dutch Duckfan Down UnderFor now, only destiny can decide if there will be a second Barks.
I do not think a second barks is crucial for the survival of Disney comics, it is enough if there are a few really good artists and writers (like Rota, Rosa, Van Horn)

(Note: I edited the 1st and 15th post of this topic - both by me of course.)

That's a bizarre notion--a terrible story isn't going to be saved by great artwork.

(Not that I understand why people think Verhagen's cross-eyed ducks are "great," though you're certainly not the only one, but that's neither here nor there).

Quote from user: GeoXThat's a bizarre notion--a terrible story isn't going to be saved by great artwork.
Maybe it is not, still I think a Duck comic from the past 20 years with bad story but really good art is at least noteworthy.

OT: I just spent about an hour on your blog, really great articles! I loved the one about The Black Moon. I will never look at that story the same way as before! (That ending!)

Thanks; I really appreciate that. And maybe you're right; at any rate, I'll examine a Verhagen story sometime soon.

"I did a quick COA search, it looks like it is still the longest 4-tier, traditional style Duck-story. By the way "Der Tiger von Bengalen" is great! I read it in 1999 for the first time and I will never forget it. Did Gulbransson retire from making Disney-comics?"

Well, Jan is not making any new Duck stories right now. He has 3 stories with Egmont that have been in their hands for 6 years. They have tentatively accepted them, but Jan is still awaiting commentary and suggested changes on two. The artwork is done on one Christmas 10-pager. More stories by Jan will be probably seen, but only a few over the next several years, based on Egmont's editing speed (or lack of it).

Characters from a 1970 Disney live-action movie. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boatniks for more information... and you can find the movie posters at http://www.movieposterdb.com/movie/0065482/The-Boatniks.html .

Fun fact: at one point I considered putting them into a TNT story.
