Quote from user: rodneyI bought US 310 for cover price. Didn't know until now that it ranked with 179 for rarity. Why is this?
#310 is rare because it was a short printing. I presume that after #309 came out with the MUCH higher $6.95 cover price, sales tanked.....so, to gauge the market, #310 was short-printed...causing a rarity....one has to think that this was the almost end of the run for Uncle Scrooge being published by Gladstone. Issues #309 thru #318 command a good price in the market.....so does #319 (first Gemstone.) A lot of #309 thru #317 sold last night on ebay for just over $200.00....and I believe, that is on the low side.....(some of the issues were rough.) Funnily, many of these issues can still be bought off of Bruce Hamilton's site for cheap...not #310 though.

I had no idea Gladstones were worth so much money.

Tail-end Gladstones have been readily going up in price over the last 5 years. The 2009 Overstreet just only recognized this in the market reports even though it is not reflected in the actual price guide. I expect the last Gemstones to be the same in a few years. The Overstreet Guide is really lacking in the Uncle Scrooge category - they show no Uncle Scrooge Whitmans from 1971-up until Whitman was the sole publisher starting with #174, even though there is a Whitman and Gold Key imprint US #96 thru #173, they show no valid pricing on early or late Gladstones (#210 and #219 are usually higher to be precise,) and all of the Gemstones are still listed at cover price, even though it is difficult to find #319 for under $30.00 and a select few others are also harder to find at twice the cover price. Overstreet has #1-71 listed accurately, and of course #179, but it drops off after that. I usually gauge a lot of this research from duck book vendors on ebay and Comic Link and Heritage auctions.

My most recent best bargain was finding some Gemstone Uncle Scrooge and Comics & Stories (mostly Comics & Stories) at a Dollar General Store. If any of you in the U.S. have a store near, check it out. There are 4 of them near me and two had them and two didn't. Almost all of the books are in great shape for the low price of $1. For a $7-8 comic I feel that is a good deal. I even found the first three Christmas Parade and Mickey Mouse Meets Blotman books that Gemstone released. If you take your time, the price sticker peels off easily and cleanly. Still can't understand why Dollar General would have them.
Other bargains I remember finding was in the early 90's I found around thirty 70's Whitmans for 50 cents each at a small comic shop that only stayed open a couple of years in my town.
And a couple of years ago through e-bay I got Mickey Mouse #40-51 in, I believe, very good shape, for about $10. And 5 sets of Comics & Stories from the 70's in runs of 10 for $5-10 each, which were in very fine to near mint conidition. But, I don't use e-bay anymore. Too much trouble to ask everyone if they will accept money orders.

I but a bunch of Gemstone issues and am visiting two more tonight. Only got two that fill gaps in my collection, but if anyone wants to trade for issues that they're finding, I would really like that.

Gah...I hit two Dollar Generals this morning and found nothing. I guess I'll have to figure out where some more are in the area.
Thanks for the tip.

I have been to five stores and haven't found one yet that doesn't have at least a couple of issues. Having a lot of fun with this!

Third Dollar General I went to was the charm, and I left with two WDC issues I needed. :D There's two more in the area I haven't checked yet. I guess I need to go to DG's web site and see where more relatively close ones are.

I'm glad you are having luck in your searches and was hoping you would enjoy this. Once you find them it can get a little addictive.
