I have moved to a new Internet Service provider, and the $crooge McDuck Page
has moved with me. Because I have severed all ties with the old ISP, there
is no redirector on the old site, so you may wish to pass around the new
address:

Some time ago, there was a thread on this mailing list about the reprints of
Don's "Life of $crooge" saga.
Well, a new edition of Lo$ has been published in Italy a couple of weeks
ago... it's part of a series of comics that are distributed both on the
newsstands *and* in the bookshops (usually, they make the Italian
best-seller's list, too...).
The book's title is "Paperdinastia: la grande storia dei paperi piu' famosi
del mondo" ("Duckdynasty: the great history of the world's most famous
ducks") (Why "duck*S*", you might ask ? Who knows... ;-)). Its 388 pages
reprint the original 12 chapters, plus 6 other stories: "Of Ducks and Dimes
and Destinies", "The Cowboy-Captain of the Cutty Sark", "The Vigilante of
Pizen Bluff", "The Dutchman's Secret", "Hearts of the Yukon", and "Last Sled
to Dawson".
Each story has a short introduction, providing a few facts and the Barks
references. It looks like these intros are just short summaries of the ones
which were used - a few years ago - for the first Italian reprint of the Lo$
in a single volume.
They just added a couple of pages introducing the extra chapters - BTW, is
"Last Sled to Dawson" actually considered as a chapter? In the book, it's
labelled as "chapter 9b"...
The book contains also Don's "Duck Family Tree", and an index of the names
of the characters appearing in the saga. Technical data: softcover, Lit.
16,900 (about $ 8).
I'll take a look at the best-sellers' charts, in the upcoming weeks, and
keep you informed... ;-)

"Last Sled for Dawson" as a Lo$ chapter? I don't thing so. You see, "Last
Sled" is like "The Sign of the Triple Distelfink". Both stories have
mentions to the past but neither "last Sled" nor "Triple Distelfink" are
something like Lo$. Both stories take place not in the past but in our days
(or, as Don says "In 1967"). This is a part from a Don's interview Komix did
last February and is about the "Triple Distelfink":
KOMIX: You had said that you are not going to create another kind of Life
and Times for another character apart from uncle Scrooge. Have you changed
your mind?
ROSA: But the Triple Distelfink is only one story, not a series of chapters
as is The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. In addition, this is a memory
recalled by Gladstone; the story does not take place entirely in the past. I
may do the same for Donald at some point. It will have nothing to do with
the--by now fifteen--chapters of the Life and Times.
KOMIX: How different are these two cases?
ROSA: The Life and Times shows the changes in uncle Scrooge during his life,
how he became the hero he is today. On the other hand, the Triple Distelfink
takes place today. Besides, when I make a story with Donald or Gladstone, I
don't have the feeling of dealing with a character as complex as Scrooge
McDuck.
Do you understand now, Armando?

In this case, it's up to the editors to decide how they advertise a story.
This Dawson story was also in the Lo$ album series in Holland, so Italy is
not the only one...
Don did not intend the Dawson story to be part of Lo$ (he couldn't at the
time he wrote that story, since that's years before Lo$ existed). But he
didn't intend "Of Ducks and Dimes and Destinies" to be part of Lo$ either.
Still, most people refer to that story as being "chapter 0".
> Both stories take place not in the past

Not 1967. Some important character would be dead by 1967, in Don's vision of
the Duck world.
BTW, the Cutty Sark story, and other "extra life of Scrooge chapters", are
also taking place in the present (1957 or so), with (rather large)
flash-backs.

This sounds very patronising.

Dear All,
I received the first new Disney comic in English I have seen for over a
year on Friday, Gladstones WDC 623. It was like Christmas in the middle
of the year! The incredible thing was that it was posted 58 weeks ago!
There has been a bit or correspondence between myself and Gladstone about
this missing comic over the last year, with Gladstone finally saying that
they will not send out any more replacements to an address which clearly
wasn't any good.
Funny thing was that the comic I received was addressed without a city
location and was addressed to Australia when I live in a completely
different country; New Zealand! This comic has travelled to a great many
places to get to me. It has been to the states of New South Wales,
Queensland, Northern Territories, South Australia, Western Australia,
Victoria and Tasmania.
On the positive side I can report that the packaging Gladstone uses is
absolute top quality. The comic was in very good condition considering
the length of time it has been in the postal system.
Should any of the other extra copies of this comic Gladstone tried to send
to me eventually turn up I will return them to Gladstone, maybe with an
atlas...

Digest 1 #173 ...new Italian "Lo$"???
Message 70 -

My word... an entire Digest about this new Italian Rosa "Lo$" book! And I
did not even know it existed (or was even planned) until Archontis
mentioned something about it during his visit, obviously under the
assumption that I must certainly know all about an entire book being
published that contained only my work. No, that's not how the "Disney
system" works. I never knew a thing about it. Now I'm trying hard just to
see if there's a way I can BUY a copy for myself! Pretty strange, eh? Eh,
I'm used to it by now.
No, "Last Sled to Dawson" is not a "Lo$" story. It simply has a flashback
in it, but all the important parts are set in the "present". And when I did
that story, I had no clue that I would be doing the "Lo$" about 5 years
later. "Lo$" stories either take place entirely in the past or are
introduced by a very brief framing sequence to reestablish for new readers
that this is an "untold story" from an earlier period.
But why didn't someone wonder why "The Dutchman's Secret" is in that book?
It's not a "Lo$" story in the very least way! It has no flashbacks to
$crooge's early life at all, not even a one-panel one! How do the editors
explain their inclusion of that one? (Well, even if I ever get a copy of
the book, I won't know that since my papa never taught me Italian.)
And Apostolis -- why do you keep insisting that I say my stories take place
in 1967 or 1966? I have never told anyone that! I say they take place in a
jumble of years in the mid 1950s. And I also regard Barks' stories, even
the later ones, to be set in this 1950's swirl. (Don't bother to
disagree -- it's simply how I explain my stories to myself. Others can make
their own decision.) But I have never told anyone that my stories are from
"1967".

Oops. I did not address the matter of "Of Ducks and Dimes and Destinies".
No, that was not originally a "Lo$" chapter, either. It was done entirely
before I decided to do the "Lo$", then Egmont delayed its publication until
after the entire "Lo$" had appeared. When Gladstone used it, I (or
somebody, I hope it was moi) suggested we call it "chapter 0" as that was a
corny marketing technique in American comics at the time. And the story has
many similarities with a "Lo$" story, but it is different.
The new "Lo$" chapters -- I don't really see them as flashbacks from the
"present" as Harry suggests, even though that's how I set them up. If you
look at the story contained in the "flashbacks", there are parts of it that
$crooge could not be telling, parts that he could not have known. I'm not
sure how to explain how I view those tales. I am sorta telling the *full*
version of the events that $crooge is telling his nephews his version of
off in some other corner of time and space. I wanted to do those new "Lo$"s
just like the original 12 chapters and leap right into the past in the
opening panel. But the editors suggested that a modern framing sequence was
needed, and they not only were probably right, but I now am enjoying the
framing sequence by using it to have $crooge or Donald comment on the
"untold tale" or as a springboard into another story as I did into "The
Dutchman's Secret" (which is the only thread of a link that story has with
the "Lo$").
But now I must dash! I have some preparations to make for a lil' dinner
party I'm giving tonight here at my place for friends Mike Kaluta, William
Stout and Mark Schultz who are all in Louisville for a model-makers'
convention. (I never said I was not a name-dropper!)

That's not a paranthesis... And Don doesn't say that - Harry is right.
Don would say in the 50'es as barks drew his best stories in that
period and Don read the magazione in this period. 1967 was the year
Scrooge is supposed to die in Don's stories, as he is a human in Don's
comics, and they can't live much longer than that, and Ducks can't at
all.
We will possibly never see Scrooge dead's day, we have only seen that
imaginative scene where Daisy,Donald, Huey,Dewey and Louie stand at his
grave (Look at duckhunt's cover-page). The drawing was done for a
german fanzine telling artists to do a drawing on the sentence:
Whjatever happened to Scrooge?
1957 is more like it, or maybe earlier. Last Sked to Dawson in the
non-flashback-scenes takes places only a few years after Barks' Back to

he's doing another chapter (10B). Will all the publishers publish
another book then? At least they should publish the story, now that
they've puiblished all the others. And don't come up with this again,
about bad ratings on new Lo$-stories. I don't believe it. Every true
Rosa-fan maybe was also a completist the day the issue with the note to

Nah... (Honk! :-)) Barks did stop in 1967, you got that right. some of
the last Scrooge stories was written there, or am I wrong? In any case
it's 1968 in DK, as the last US-story by the duck man was published
that year here...

they've puiblished all the others. And don't come up with this again,
about bad ratings on new Lo$-stories. I don't believe it. Every true
Rosa-fan maybe was also a completist the day the issue with the note to
send in and rate was in the mag, so they kept it... I do that, but I
see that I have be carefull.
> Actually the correct year is...1966. That year Carl Barks stop
drawing
> ducks. So, all the stories are taken place that year (or maybe some
years
> before)
Nah... (Honk! :-)) Barks did stop in 1967, you got that right. some of
the last Scrooge stories was written there, or am I wrong? In any case
it's 1968 in DK, as the last US-story by the duck man was published
that year here...
Some years? at least 10 or so, and that's not some years, that's half
of my lifetime for example!
Don's stories at least, take place from 1877 (published stories) to the
50'es. or are any of you stories supposed to take place in the 60'es
Don?

Is there anyone from Italy that would like to help me get my greasy hands on
that lovely book? I'll pay or trade with whatever you like. Please contact
me if there's anyone who can help me. Thanks in advance.

> Not Exactly. You see, Don said in an interview (again) that "Of Ducks,
Dimes
> and Destinies" is actually the 0 chapter. He didn't say anything about
"Last
> Sled".
Ummm, can i also express my subjective opinion? Just a guess though, perhaps
Don himself can clarify all this mess. i believe that this flashback thing
is one way to achieve the actually-meant-for-serials-episode to fit better
to be both a one-shot story and a part of the chapters. i can't imagine how
after 6 months the Lo$ 12
chapters were printed, they print another chapter, ex: 9b with no flashback,
you see that would create a confusion and may even driven those first
time-readers crazy looking for the chapter 10 in the next issues. As you
know there're lotsa first time readers everyday, imagine me a newbie reading
an Uncle Scrooge story for the first time and reading the 9b story, and
liked it a lot but finds a confusing situation where i definitely can't find
the next episodes in the next issues, i may end up despise the Uncle Scrooge
story. Perhaps i'm not so good at English language, i'm still having problem
to express my opinion in short sentences. Oh well.
Cheers,
Arie Fachrisal who haven't read any of the "additional chapters" yet except
for the Duck, Dime, Destinies and Cutty Sark.

>>>No, "Last Sled to Dawson" is not a "Lo$" story.
That's my opinion too. Like "The Triple Distelfink", "Last Sled" isn't a Lo$
chapter 'cause take place in "present". Both stories have some flashbacks
but neither "Triple Distelfink" nor "Last Sled" stories take place in the
past.
>>>But why didn't someone wonder why "The Dutchman's Secret" is in that
book?
That's "inexplicable"!!!
>>>why do you keep insisting that I say my stories take place in 1967 or
1966? I have never told anyone that!
Ooops! Sorry about all that. A week ago, I saw in D.U.C.K.hunt a panel with
your sign which was about U.$. "pass away". In the grave I saw the date
"1867-1967: Fortuna Favet Fortibus" (which means "Fate (Luck) helps the
darings", or something like that). It was 1967 when Barks stop drawing
comics. So. I thought that all the stories take place *before* that year.
That;s my fault, sorry again!
>>>But now I must dash! I have some preparations to make for a lil' dinner
party I'm giving tonight here at my place for friends Mike Kaluta, William
Stout and Mark Schultz who are all in Louisville for a model-makers'
convention. (I never said I was not a name-dropper!)
Dinner party, eh? Try to invite all us in DCML!!!
Again, a question for you: What's your plans about Lo$? Are you going to
make many new chapters like "The Cowboy Captain of Cutty Surk"?
