A big complaint about some of the Disney comics published by Gladstone (1986-90, 1993-98) was that the price---$7.95, $8.95 or $9.95---was too much for the average collector to pay. The thicker paper and better colors were a big improvement over the paper and colors of the old Dell comics but $9.95 (plus tax) was still a lot of money to spend for a comic book. Does anyone know what the IDW books will sell for? Scarpo, I'm hoping that the more recent Disney stories by European artists will be part of IDW's "best and brightest." Some of us don't really need more reprinted reprints of reprints.
In 2013, highly stylized versions of Mickey and Donald and the gang began appearing in new cartoons on the Disney Channel. They also appear on cups and clothing and calendars. Wouldn't it be fun to have new comics that feature these re-designed characters? Hello, publishers?

Looking at current prices comics publish by IDW, "Artist's Edition" can cost up to 100$, but they are editions for "super fans" who want to have a Rosa or Barks comics in larger format, or in black&white. Standard issue (ie announced monthly, unless something IDW changes) have 32 pages and cost 4$. I also hope that IDW will publish a special edition for example "Christmas Parade" or "Vacation Parade".

My favorite Carl Barks story is A Christmas For Shacktown, first published in the January 1952 issue of Donald Duck Four Color Comics. It has been reprinted many times, most recently in 2012 by Fantagraphics. The orphans of Shacktown get to enjoy their first real Christmas, courtesy of Scrooge's money and a "silly useless toy train." Maybe IDW can reprint it (again!) along with Barks' original concept art and story sketches. I wouldn't pay $100 for such a book but I'd be willing to pay more than $4.

I can officially confirm what the Legacy Comics clerk told me two months ago regarding Joe Books and Darkwing Duck. The latest e-mail from Mike High Comics announces the new comic book releases for February 4, 2015. Among them are these:

Joe Books

Darkwing Duck Omnibus TPB #1
Disney Pixar Treasury SC #1
Disney Princess Treasury SC

Oh boy!
Angilasman
Hmmmm... so IDW got the classic license and Joe Books got all the newer stuff (Disney Afternoon through their recent films).
I hope both companies do a good job. If we get a DuckTales series that'll mean two Scrooge books every month and that's all right by me.

Would love to see Darkwing, Ducktales, Talespin and Rescue Rangers.

On February 4 I bought the Disney Pixar Treasury and the Disney Princess Treasury. Both are 800-page digest-size books retailing for $19.95 each. I didn't buy the Darkwing Duck book because it is a reprint of the first 16 issues of the Darkwing comics issued by Boom Kids in 2010-11 and I have all those comics. (Issues #17 and #18 were not included in the book because they were part of a crossover story that also took place in two issues of DuckTales.) I have heard that some of the original comic-book art was redrawn and some of the dialogue was rewritten. Can someone who bought the new book let us know what was changed? If a lot has changed, I'll probably have to buy the book.

Unfortunately I have no chance to compare Boom edition and Joe Books edition, but I must say that despite my fears, Joe Books published "Darwking Duck" very well. The comic is in B5 format (normal USA comics format), has 420 pages, good paper, good print quality. It has all the covers (although some as thumbnails). And additional comic made for Egmont. So I hope that if there are any changes, they are minimal and can say that "Darkwing Duck Definitely Editon" is one of the better releases of Disney comics in the US in recent years (not counting the Fantagraphics' collection). And as the number of pages (420) is really cheap, because it costs $30.

That's good to know. I appreciate the glossy paper and the beautiful colors. A lot of publishers have started to go back to plain old newsprint paper for the inside pages of comic books. I remember in June of 1965 when Gold Key put out a giant-size Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck comic. All the stories were reprints and the entire comic used plain old newsprint paper---even the cover! Yikes!

This interview give some more information about what's new in this edition.
Sparrow: There's a 3-page intro we produced for the German publisher that's never been seen in the U.S. There's also some supplementary material, and yes, an all-new epilogue that wraps the series and gives some threads that will lead into the new monthly.

I went back and revised a lot of the characters mostly Scrooge, Gosalyn and Morgana to make them more on model. A few pages were done from scratch to go with the revised script. The big art additions are the epilogue and the German edition introduction pages.
The real meat of the new edition is the script. Its closer to the tone of the original show, it eliminates the inconsistencies and is just overall funnier. I'm happy to have this edition as the "definitive" one.
Thomps2525
"Definitive." Okay, okay, I can see that I will have to buy a copy. Most of the artists who have drawn Donald over the years have been fairly consistent with his appearance, but the design of Uncle Scrooge varies quite a bit from one artist to another. I'm referring to animated films as well as comic books. Scrooge sometimes has grey side-whiskers instead of white and the amount of detail in those whiskers can vary quite a bit. On the original DuckTales series, Scrooge didn't even look old---He looked like Donald with some fake side-whiskers and a pince-nez!

Well, it took only a couple of minutes for me to be disappointed: I just checked Amazon and the Darkwing Duck treasury is temporarily out of stock. More copies are on the way, though. The book page notes that "James Silvani is an illustrator and author living in Hawaii. He is best known for his work with Disney comics and children's books as well as fine art for Disney and Lucasfilm." He does Disney comics and lives in Hawaii. James, you are living a dream!

Most comic shops still carry it.
In the coming month, Aaron Sparrow and I will be at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, Wondercon in Anaheim and C2E2 in Chicago with lots of copies of the book. If I can remember to spell my name right, I'll even sign 'em for you.
And yes, drawing ducks and living in Hawaii doesn't suck

If anyone did purchase the Boom Kids/kaboom Darkwing Duck comics during their original run, I can say picking up Darkwing Duck: The Definitively Dangerous Edition! is worth the investment. There are some significant differences in the overall storylines, artwork, and the new treasury changes up a few key outcomes that will surely play a role in the new D.W. title.
If your local comic shop or amazon is currently sold out, here are links to two stores in NYC with available copies you can order today:
Midtown Comics: Darkwing Duck
Forbidden Planet NYC: Darkwing Duck
James is a remarkably talented artist and a very funny guy, if you want to see some more of his work (Ducks and beyond!) visit his Tumblr linked below??I'm including 3 additional links to more comic artists with equal talent who will going to be providing new material for Joe Books and IDW in the coming months... there's a lot to look forward to this year!
