Quote from user: Roger North[...] but I think Mythos Island is cool because it has a lot of characters from The Mickey Mouse Universe and The Donald Duck Universe in the same story.
Hmm, interesting what people like so. I stand a bit in distance to crossover-mania. There are a couple of Italian mega-stories produced on the occasion of special events (e. g. Olympic Games) where Duckburg and Mouseton collide, but I wouldn't say that the stories are per se better because ducks and mice stumble across each other. I wouldn't like to see such too often, not to speak of letting the Ducks clash with allegedly "popular figures" much "worse" than Mickey--"Dumbo" lies in Barks's Duckburg as an indigestible chunk. Generally, my opinion is that high fences make good neighbours in the Disney comic world. :P

I agree. Besides, the scale doesn't work?there's something primordially disturbing about a mouse standing nearly the stature of a full-grown duck.

I'll admit that some stories featuring Mickey and Donald in the same story are somewhat lame but Mythos Island is not exactly one of them in my opinion.

Let's talk about mega-crossover here. I'm talking about Duck universe, Mouse universe, Walt's very own universe (Dumbo, Pinocchio, Bambi, Alice, Peter Pan, Brer Rabbit etc), preschoolers' universe (Pooh) etc etc :

Though they only appear in one single (big) panel at the end of the story, but such is rare. Very rare.

Gober I believe you're reffering to This is Your Life Donald Duck. I have that story in Donald and Mickey #25.

The Italian story Gober linked to is something else without an American publication reference.

I remember that old Donald birthday (?) 'classic' you mention (drawn by Strobl, I believe) very well. Not without a certain charm, that story, but if one puts down the nostalgia glasses, it cannot seriously contest with the later Donald birthday stories of Marco Rota (1984) and Don Rosa (1994) in wit and spirit.

Roger, sorry, I think that is not the story. It's about a storytelling contest held by 'Topolino' magazine (kinda breaking the fourth wall here) in which all Disney characters can participate. It's to celebrate Topolino anniversary (# 2000).
But I guess I'm not familiar with "This is Your Life Donald Duck". Have any inducks link?
There are also some Donald's birthday stories that involve a crossover that I know:
The riddle stories (3 parts): D 2003-285
And About Donald: D 2003-240
I don't know if there are others.

Maybe it is another story. I'm sorry I was mistaken. I have heard about the story From Egg to Duck but I don't have it. I heard in that story that Scrooge and Grandma were brother and sister which we all is a myth thanks to Don Rosa. Speaking of Which I have The Duck Who Never Was in Donald Duck #286. I know one birthday story of Donald's that had Mickey guest star in it. It's called A Blighted Birthday. I have that story in Donald Duck and Friends #340. Strangely enough Mickey's name doesn't appear in the title only Donald's name appears but Mickey is in as much of the story as Donald except for the first and last pages.

No, we don't know it's a myth. We just know that Scrooge and Grandma aren't brother and sister in Don's stories. Just like Romano Scarpa giving Scrooge a brother doesn't "disprove" Don Rosa's version of the Duck Family, Don Rosa's version doesn't "disprove" Marco Rota's Donald Duck origin story. It's a big Disney universe out there, Roger. There's room for all sorts of interpretations.

But this is off-topic...

Maybe so but I still think Scrooge and Grandma are not related. Scrooge is scottish and Grandma is more rural. There's no way they are related. So I'm going with Don Rosa on this one. However I'm not going to disregard any of the Duck relatives that haven't appeared in any of Barks or Rosa's stories.

That's a good point you have there, Roger.

To be honest, my personal preference for the relative tree is a hodgepodge. The thing that I like about Rosa's tree is that it's organized and based off of Barks' outlines but I would really love to see an expanded tree that includes the secondary and tertiary characters (to a point) that have really made a meaningful impact in many duck and mouse related stories. This is one of the minor problems I had with Rosa's tree - such as his original reluctance to include Fethry on it just because Barks never used him, which I felt was not really fair (I'm rather glad he was forced to include him). I'll clarify what I mean...

I consider Barks and Gottfredson to be core and undisputed canon for Donald/Scrooge and Mickey. If they made or used a relative at any point, it sticks regardless of fan or creaotor bias (let's take Ludwig for example).

Then comes the second tier characters for me - or those that I feel really deserve to part of the core canon cast, be they from the second generation of successors or those that "rose well above the typical Gold Key mediocrity or took on a life of their own" such as Fethry. It's at this point that we venture into "Your Mileage May Vary."

For the ducks it's usually Rosa/Van Horn/Scarpa since they are considered "the original successors". For the mice, Scarpa and to a very *VERY* rough "pick-and-choose" extent, Murry. Sadly, my bias shows on Murry because I feel that many of the relatives added in his stories were sort of apocryphal, not well thought out, or weren't in very good or well remembered stories. This is what I mean when you have a character like Fethry who started out in such stories and then, under better writers and broader ideas (Dick Kinney) took on a life all his own (be it in overseas countries). This just my own opinion mind you, because I feel that the inclusion of many of the numerous throwaway relatives, such as those introduced during the Murry/Lockman/Strobl era also have the possibilty of making an otherwise "clean family tree" a cluttered hurricane-style nightmare of one-note nobodies. In the end, whereas creators like Scarpa/Rosa/Van Horn took time to make their relatives work within the core pantheon, the majority of the Murry/Lockman/Strobl stuff really boils down to a case of whether or not you think it's awful or not. I just feel like creators such as Scarpa's contributions would be more valid, because their visions stayed truer to the original creators designs - if that makes any sense.

This is why I would really love to see a slightly expanded duck tree with the johnny-come-latelies like Rumpus McDuck (Scrooge's half-brother by Van Horn), Gideon McDuck (Scrooge's other half brother by Scarpa) or even the old "cartoon series uncles" who I think are just as valid such as Moby Duck (who has recently been HEAVILY retooled in Italy with Fethry replacing Dimwitty) and obviously, Ludwig Von Drake (who we all know the only reason he WASN'T included was due to rather shameless and disappointing editor bias). Rather than being one note throwaways, they've really proven their staying power and I think that should mean something.

(As a sidenote: I'd love to see Lars Jensen do more with Douglas McDuck: Scrooge's cousin, I think? How would he fit on the tree Lars since Scrooge is technically the last of the clan? I know it was explained somewhere else but I've forgotten)

Editorial bias is both a good and bad thing. I can understand leaving off the more apocryphal and nonsensical ones, but when you have to fight for characters like Fethry or Ludwig, it becomes more detrimental than anything (you'd be surprised at the people who see Rosa's tree, ask where Ludwig is on it, and are disappointed to not see him).

One of these days I'll doodle out a mouse family tree based off of Gottfredson characters and Scarpa's contributionss. I think that'd be an interesting thing to see...

Anyway - that's my longer-than-necessary rant about Disney family trees.

To make it more on topic, favorite stories.... I have a few. I'll try and choose one from my favorite creators:

Donald Duck:

Amundsen's Talisman - Romano Scarpa
Forbidden Valley - Carl Barks
Incident at McDuck Tower - Don Rosa
The Black Moon - William Van Horn
Paper Route Panic - Tony Strobl
World of the Dragonlords - Cavazzano/Erickson
Mythos Island - The McGreals/Ferioli

Uncle Scrooge:

Life and Times (obviously)
No Room for Human Error - William Van Horn
The Treasure of the Golden Suns - Duck Tales (yes I know this is a DT story but I would KILL, KILL to see it adapted into comic book form some day)
The McDuck Foundation - Romano Scarpa
For Old Dime's Sake - Carl Barks

Mickey Mouse:

Sky Island - Gottfredson/Osborne
The House of Mystery - Gottfredson/Walsh
The Land of Long Ago - Gottfredson/DeMaris(?)
(The original Phantom Blot story should be up here but I'm just tired of seeing it reprinted so often. It's become Mickey's "Back to the Klondike". lol)
The Blot's Double Mystery - Scarpa
The Ghost of Maneater Mountain - Wright (so sad that this never got reprinted. Amazingly well crafted serial. D:)
The Big Fall/A Phantom Blot Bedtime Story - Nordling/DeStefano
Case of the Dazzling Hoodoo - Late Murry
Mystery of the Doublecross Ranch - Early Murry

Anything Else:

The Legend of the Chaos God - Weiss/Quartieri (that big Disney Adventures crossover)
The Ghastly Goat of Quiver Moor - Scott & Hector Saavedra (Rescue Rangers)
For the Love of Cheese - Tom & Mary Bierbaum/Saavedra (Rescue Rangers)
The "Fluffy" Trilogy - I forget its creators (Darkwing Duck)

...aaaaaaaaaaaand that's all I can really think of.

Rumpus McFowl.

Isn't he Scrooge's "full" brother? I don't remember.

Moby is Donald's cousin, as far as I know.

I have a cunning plan for Douglas, but it'll have to wait until I'm asked to do a 16-page Scrooge. And yes, Douglas is Scrooge's cousin.
