...Duck artist and writer.
It might be interesting to see who gets the most votes??besides Barks, that is.

Carl Barks is by far and away my favourite Duck artist and writer. No one comes even remotely close. After him I would choose Daan Jippes as artist and then Daniel Branca. I can't think of a writer that is even remotely close.
But, I like Floyd Gottfredson as an artist second to Barks, and Bill Walsh and some of Mickey Mouse's late '30s and '40s writers next after Barks.

For what it's worth - I could have written the above.
Though I would also say that some of the Paul Murry things from the fifties are among my childhood favorits...

My favorite Disney artist after Barks is Floyd Gottfredson. I'm inclined to count him as a writer as well; although he didn't dialogue the Mickey Mouse strip for most of its run, he did plot it all through its golden age. William Van Horn is my favorite Duck artist/writer after Barks, and Daan Jippes and Daniel Branca are also among my favorite artists (the stories that Jippes has written by himself or with Freddy Milton are not bad at all, either--worthy imitations of Barks though nowhere near as good as Barks' work).
If we're allowed to step outside the field of just Ducks and Mice, I'd like to put in a word for Paul Murry and Dick Moores' work on the Brer Rabbit comic strip--the art is wonderful and the stories are clever and frequently hilarious (I assume the strips were written by Murry and by Moores, as well as drawn by them, but I don't know for sure). These are my favorite non-Duck non-Mouse Disney stories (would that they'd be reprinted in some nice hardback volume). I've also heard that Murry's comic-strip work on Jose Carioca is excellent, but I haven't seen any of it.

Silly me, I forgot about Romano Scarpa. I'd rank him alongside William Van Horn, though I haven't seen as nearly as much of his work as I'd like to.

What about Marco Rota, has everyone forgot about him or do you all dislike him? Otherwise I agree with you. And Roger North, it's fun to here ther's more than me who likes Ferioli!

Yes, me too! I'm not into MM these days (maybe I would be if I tried reading MM stories again) but during my childhood Paul Murry's Mickey and Goofy adventures were magical to me! I loved them! I grew up in Greece where every Saturday I would savor the small size weekly pub, MIKY MAOUS, along with the larger format monthly release titled, MIKY. I still have a few dozen of these old copies dating as far back as 1966 or 1967. I get a strong shot of nostalgia every now and then when I pick one up...

Paul Murray and Dick Moores did NOT write the strips they drew for Western Publishing. I'm not sure who the different writers were for Bre'r Rabbit in the late 1940s. William Van Horn is one of my favourite writers, but not Duck artists.
I also like Manny Gonzales, Bill Wright and romano Scarpa drawing Mickey Mouse and Goofy. Gottfredson wrote the strip in its early days, and yes, I like his plotting/staging, etc. adding to the overall story formation. I forgot to mention Merrill De Maris as a good writer. The Mickey Mouse strip had several good ones.

Carl Barks by far! - After Barks I would choose Rosa, Murry and Gottfredson, just to name a few. I love the duck stories by Jippes/Milton too.

Sorry to correct you, Rob, but Dick Moores in fact did write some of the stories he drew, including his famous "Wonderful Whizzix" (OS 427). Some Western Publishing credits, though seemingly lost today, did survive at Disney into the early 1990s, at which point some Moores writer's credits were indeed discovered.

Wow! Dick Moores wrote "The Wonderful Whizzix"! He should have written more of his stories. I think that was the best story he worked on for Western.

Favorite duck artist, bar Barks?
Easy: Daan Jippes & Daniel Branca.
Well, I also love Marco Rota & Ben Verhagen, plus Giorgio Cavazzano-- I have quite a fondness for his early work, and for his "second style"; speaking of periods, I like the newer, rounder style less, which Cavazzano & Vicar have adopted lately (I much prefer Vicar's earlier style-- quite like that of Gutenberghus).
Gutenberghus also had some great artists and very good stories.
And Scarpa.
Oh, and William Van Horn!
As a writer...
I like Rosa's stories a lot.
William Van Horn is a wonderful humor writer; his stories are very funny, with lots of absurdity and zaniness, and the dialogue is always a lot of fun-- and it all flows naturally. All this may make him the best writer in the full sense of the word.

My favourits are Don Rosa and William Van Horn. No one comes close to them. Barks is 3rd and Rota is 4th on my list. ;)
