Topic: My De Spell family tree

Using the Wayback machine, we're able to see an older version of the family trees page by Gilles Maurice (http://web.archive.org/web/20051101040937/http://goofy313g.free.fr/calisota_online/trees/index.html). It can be seen that Gilles Maurice made (or at least he was planning to make) a family tree for Magica De Spell, which apparently was never posted on the internet. I decided to make a De Spell Tree myself, which can be seen in this message. I hope you like the tree! If you've got any comments, scans, names or new relatives to add to the tree, please tell me. If you've got any questions about the tree, feel free to ask them.

Thanks for posting this--very interesting! I don't believe any of these characters have made it into stories printed in English, though I have read stories with some of them in other languages. I'm now going to look them all up in Inducks! Is the brother-turned-raven Poe only in DuckTales, or is he in comics as well? And is there ever any indication of who Minima's parents are? Even whether she is the daughter of Magica's brother or her sister?

Poe appeared in three Ducktales comics (his INDUCKS page: http://coa.inducks.org/character.php?c=Mr.+Poe). As far as I know, there are no indications of who Minima??s parents are. Minima was introduced in a Ducktales comic (http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=KZ+3590) , but she eventually made several non-Ducktales appearances, in which she visits Magica together with aunt Carolina. It could be that she lives with Carolina, but this was never clearly established in a comic. I placed Poe as her father on the tree, as I saw no reason to include another (unknown) sibling of Magica.
I know that, using INDUCKS, a lot of these relatives can be found. Some of the relatives who I found in stories from my own collection or by using the INDUCKS searching engine might be difficult to find on INDUCKS, so here are a couple of stories in which they appear:
Adèle: http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+2677-5
Gerlinda: http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=D+96336
??Auntie??: http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+810025
Uncle Boz: http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+2003-4
? (Magica??s uncle): http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+860220

Thanks for the links for the non-Inducks-indexed characters!

Yeah, thanks for your hard work, Scroogerello--that is really damn cool.
Mr. M
Magica did had two more neices named Hocus and Pocus in two European stories :
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=D+2011-093
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=D+2009-189 (and as you can tell by scan below they had love afair with HD&L ;) )
Also character "Carolina De Spell" was refrence as Magica's Grandmother in Polish comics but maybe it's difrent in italian...

Magica also has another niece - Streghella. She has appeared in only a couple of stories - http://coa.inducks.org/character.php?c1=date&c=Streghella&view=4. In early stories she appeared with blonde hair, as seen in her character gallery - http://coa.inducks.org/character.php?c=Streghella&view=2. In the most recent story I believe she appears in the right hand corner. Having been given a makeover to look like her Aunt Magica - http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+2890-3.
I knew about a lot of these characters that Magica is related to, but a few of them were new to me.
I do have several questions though. In what stories do Abrazella and Abracadabro De Spell appear? Could you provide links please? These characters don't appear to be indexed on INDUCKS. Also, is there any evidence that Adele and Matilda are sisters? Or that Abracadabro De Spell is their father? Or is this all just speculation?
I am also confused about Carolina De Spell. In some stories I am told that she is listed as Magica's Aunt, while other stories list her as Magica's Grandmother. Are Carolina De Spell and Granny De Spell meant to be the same character, or two different characters? Is it possible that Carolina De Spell is Granny De Spell given a makeover and a first name? I notice that on INDUCKS there are pictures of Carolina De Spell in Granny De Spell's gallery.
Mr. M
Well Magica can have two grandmothers ;)
P.S. From what story is Matilda De Spell? Looks familiar...

This blonde-haired version is merely a renamed version of Witch Child, who has also been called Nocina and Maghetta in Italy. Witch Child isn't really supposed to be a relative of Magica...

As for "Carolina De Spell," it seems self-evident that this is Granny De Spell, translated to Polish from Italian (where her name is Nonna Caraldina).

Yeah, I found these characters, too. But in at least the Dutch and the French version, it's said that Magica can't stand the fact that Hocus and Pocus cal her 'Aunt', as they're not related to her at all.

Of course, making a family tree of a comic book character isn't possible without speculating, as so little facts about their relationships have been given in the stories. Adèle and Matilda being sisters is of course possible, just like Abracadabro being their father (and the brother of Magica's father) is possible, but not a fact given.
This is Abracadabro's INDUCKS page: http://coa.inducks.org/character.php?c=Uncle+Abracadabro

I don't really think so. That's the reason why I chose Carolina to be Magica's aunt instead of her grandma (which is a fact given in at least the German and the Dutch stories in which she appears): Magica has a very old aunt ('auntie'), who seems to be MUCH older that Carolina. It doesn't seem logical to me that Granny or Carolina is Auntie's mother, especially not because Carolina looks much younger than her. That's why I placed Auntie and Granny on a dfferent branch of the tree. In this way, they can still be the same age (like Scrooge and Grandma Duck). In addition, in at least the Dutch, French, German and Italian version, Granny and Carolina have different name and a different look. I don't see why they should be considered to be the same character.

I'm now updating the tree (I've added a scan of Magica's mother and I've added Rumpus McFowl as Magica's love). Does anybody have any suggestions about whether/how I should adjust the tree? I haven't changed any of the connections in the tree yet.

Thanks for the info ramapith. I had merely seen claims on other peoples' webpages that Streghella was related to Magica, so I was unsure. Considering that I haven't read these stories myself. Plus we know that some of Magica's relatives do have blonde hair.
To Scroogerello - thanks for the links to the pages or stories that Abracadabro, Matilda, and Abrazella appear in. While I haven't read the stories that Carolina De Spell appears in I will agree that she certainly looks nothing like Granny De Spell. I agree that it seems more likely that Carolina De Spell and Granny De Spell are different characters. And Carolina De Spell does look young enough to be Magica's aunt, rather than her grandmother.
Mr. M
As I mentioned - there is no problem for Magica to have TWO grandmothers ;)

Also - She's a witch so... you know... propably have some potion that made her stay younger ;) It's like reverse Snow White...

ALSO (!) I just got reminded of an Italian story that includes a flashback from Magica being a little girl. In the flashback her grandfather appears (he takes tolder Magica fishing... which is a cute image BTW) I will try to digup the story from my collection and send the scan soon...

ALSO #2 : I recall one more story where Magica tells a story about her ancestor who saved Scrooges ancestor (who was some sort of a king) but since the story takes place in middle ages I don't know do you want Magicas relatives from like 30 generations ago ;)
Mr. M
And here you go...

http://s7.postimg.org/b5jzl4e93/dziadek_de_czar.jpg

AWWWW!!!! Just look how cute Magica was :D

And yes, she calls the character "Dziadek" (Polish for "Grandfather") He also tells her not to use magic for fishing since that's "dosen't count". Maybe his not a wizard at all?

It's from this story :
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+2113-1

Also, as a bonus :

This guy! Giuseppe the chief.
http://s7.postimg.org/6xp7cdctj/eksem.jpg
In the story he appears as Magica's old friend from school (she apperently went to regular one) who has a big crush on her (Brigitta MacBridge style). Magica lerns that Scrooge is planing to make a big deal with Giuseppe's restaurant so she let him date her as part of her plot to get the dime. The things get complicated when Giuseppe proposes to Magica and the two almost get married.

It's one of my favorite of Magica stories and it has some cute flashback to her past. Strong recomendation.

I did a search on INDUCKS and came across a few more stories that mention relatives of Magica. I don't know if there are pictures of these relatives, but they might at least be worth noting.
In the story "Great Puddles of Badness" Magica and Mad Mim watch a hotel for Magica's cousin, while Magica's cousin goes on a trip. http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=S+67084. Perhaps someone else can tell me if this cousin is given a name or not.
In the story "Be It Ever So Humble" there is mention of Magica's ancestor Morgana De Spell who made a deal with Uncle Scrooge's ancestor, Old Ebeneeza McDuck. http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=S+67019. If anyone knows how Ebeneeza McDuck is related to Uncle Scrooge, we might be able to determine how Morgana De Spell is related to Magica.
In the story "Bruxas Pre-Historicas" Magica and Mim use a crystal ball to view the pasts of their pre-historic ancestors. http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+800109.
In the series "Pre-Histories" is a story about Magica's preh-historic ancestor. Possibly the same one from "Bruxas Pre-Historicas". http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=F+JM+85006P.
In the story "Heranca De Genio" Magica's Uncle Austragesimo gives Magica a genie. http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=B+880105.
Finally, in the story "Amelia e l'antenata strega per forza" Magica tells a story about her ancestor who disliked using magic. http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+2228-2.
