I wish Disney would take the same approach with some of the Disney Afternoon shows. At least the diehard fans can get legitimate copies, even if they wouldn't sell well at retail.
Interesting that Boom! is going POD for some projects -- this hot on the heels of launching a Kickstarter program to fund an upcoming graphic novel. :-/
There's a Facebook group dedicated to convince Disney to do it :

We've had some interesting contacts lately!

Quote from user: JanoPlease don't confuse print on demand with this "print on order" that BOOM! is doing here. POD is designed to keep niche titles available over a long period of time. There is no set number of books (no edition) printed in advance, but all books are digitally printed when they are ordered by a store (or by a customer via a store).
What BOOM! is doing here is to collect preorders and print ONE single edition with exactly the numbers of the preorders that came in. It's actually not much different from regular comic distribution in the US (if I understand the "previews" system right), only that there won't be a second (or any further) edition after that initial print run. This is *not* what POD is about. (And I think they'll still use standard offset printing instead of the digital print method POD uses.)
My bad. I always assumed they were pretty similar:
http://www.firstbook-writing-editing-publishing.com/print-on-demand.html
Anyway, it's interesting that Boom has been using channels that have traditionally been used by independent creators (Kickstarter funding, print to order books.) Either they're being pretty daring these days, or they can't afford to take any financial risks.
Either way, it's good to see that the material will be available in some form. Like I said before, I wish Disney would keep vaulted movies and television series available to hardcore fans through some kind of alternative distribution system.

I imagine the "print to order" path Boom is taking on this last edition has more to do with the end of the license than anything else. Once the license ends they wouldn't be able to solicit/sell these books anymore, so it's a way of not getting stuck with extras that they have to basically eat.
The kickstarter campaign...I don't know what to make of that. It's one thing when you're a struggling creator trying to get a book published...I don't know if actual companies should be asking for handouts to help them print their books.

Yeah, I don't understand why the artist doesn't just fund the book herself through Kickstarter... why get Boom involved at all? Like you said, the only logical reason an indy creator has to go through a traditional publisher is to eat the printing costs and handle distribution. She seems pretty "net famous" already and could probably raise all the funds through Kickstarter herself. Go figure.

Kind of an embarrassment, if you ask me...but at this point, I don't know if Boom has much shame. Financial woes would probably outweigh any loss of face.

There's an interview with Aaron Sparrow and James Silvani at http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=35388 , where they talk about the Darkwing Duck book.
And there's an interview with writer Ian Brill at http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=35492 where he looks back at his run on the book... and comments on the Sparrow/Silvani interview! The entire Darkwing Duck #1 has been added to the article and can be read legally and for free.

Thanks for posting. Two interesting interviews. They have done great work with Darkwing Duck.
The crossover "Dangerous Currency" is published in the Duck Tales and Darkwing Duck books. Does anyone know if the TPB #5 of Darkwing Duck include all parts or only the ones from the Darkwing Duck books?

It will include the whole thing. I'm not sure if it will be available in stores or through the usual online channels though. I think it's pre-order only?

It seems to be pre-order only: "Will be printed to order, so make sure you pre-order your copy today!"

Quote from user: Charlie BrownI preordered at www.tfaw.com - a shop new to me.
Did this trade paperback actually come out on Wednesday? I pre-ordered at tfaw.com as well, and now they list it as "not available to purchase at this time". On Boom's site it is listed, predictably, as being "sold out". I resisted buying the individual issues and pre-ordered (something I don't usually do to save on postage) because of the "print to order" announcement; I hope that wasn't a mistake. The individual issues are not all available any more.
Charlie Brown, have you heard anything from tfaw.com about this?

I did get a copy at my shop on Wednesday. I can't recall clearly, but I believe that I did pre-order it.

TFAW sent me an email alleging that my copy is shipping soon. I'd preordered it back in September, however.

Was this a recent e-mail? I haven't heard anything from them since I pre-ordered early November.
