Now, that BOOM! got the Disney license, we may get a new English (!) Carl Barks Collection. I really would love to have all great Barks stories combined with interviews, backside articles and cover art in hardcover books. A collection like the German one.
But will it come?
I have found an offer for the complete set of the Another Rainbow hardcover collection from the 80s today. It's at $ 2.400 excl. shipping.
The cons:
* all comics are printed in black and white
* the books are over 20 years old (not brand new)
* box 10 is said to have a bad printing quality at colored pages (cover art)
The pros
* all Carl Barks stories :)
* special features like interviews, articles, cover and production art
* I could get it now (not 2010, 2011, never)
What you you think? Perhaps you can give me some hints to make a decision.
P.S.: It's really sad, that Gemstone didn't had the time and money to make the announced collection.

I wouldn't consider it a "con" that the comics are B/W, but the matter of fact a "con" that they are censored!
What you have got in Germany and we have got in Scandinavia, is the uncensored version of Barks (all though there where great flaws in both the Danish and Swedish editions)
I have been corresponding with Geoffrey Blum and he is about to finnish the articles for the last (six?) books about Carl Barks Collected Works, which should be running up his work, before and after Disney ( CEO, et al)
I'm truly sorry to say that it seems to be ONLY the Norwegian part of Egmont, that produces these unik printings and it realy P****s
me off, that this opportunity aren't made public worldwide.
Egmont - I´ve told you before and I tell you again - don't waste our lifes with smalltalk!
In the honour of Carl Barks - surprise me!

Good question. I think it might need to be produced outside USA. It is a high-priced item, and, therefore, will attract a small group of dedicated fans. That was the case in Scandinavia and Germany. There is a very limited market for it in USA and Canada, and an even smaller market for it in the rest of the English speaking World. Ordinarily, there would be a large market for the English language printings of Barks stories in his original language in Europe. But, not many fans in Scandinavia and Germany, who already have this high-priced and physically large collection in their own language, will want to pay for and house another, almost identical set. So, those countries will add only a few purchasers. But France, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands and Eastern Europe should add a significant amount of sales. I assume someone may try to convince Boom! to look into trying to modify Egmont's base materials into an English set. They may test offer it by taking pre-orders. If there are enough orders to make it financially viable, Boom! may go ahead with the project. If not, they won't.
I wouldn't place my life savings on a bet going either way, at this point. But, I don't feel that there is significantly less chance that it will occur with Boom! having the traditional comics license than it would have been with Gemstone. The project being undertaken by Gemstone was never a certainty.
Personally, I think an English version will come to pass within the next 20 years. When it will start, and which firm will sponsor it, I cannot predict.
I do hoe it starts within one year.

Robb, I think that there are a great deal of Scandinavian readers that either didn't get the limited versions or is still interested in an English version (knowing that both CBL and CBLiC were censored) and the translation (at least in the first five of the Danish lot, was humiliating to Mr. Barks (R.H.S.)) - along with the colouring, which were Photoshop'ed horrors...
Egmont could - if they would - let their prints and files flow on to, say Boom! and might even let their crew (the latter one, who were the ones, that got it all worked out!) make the final, overall, ultimate, second to none CARL BARKS COLLECTED WORKS.

Charlie Brown - I think you should buy it - but try to bargain if there's an option.
The CBL is great, though it's twenty odd years old...the drawings AND Carl and Garé Barks dialog, is more than enough!

How much does the Carl Barks Collection cost? If It's not too expensive I might buy it myself but if it is then it's not worth it.

Roger, the Carl Barks Collection hasn't come out in English. Only in Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish and (I think) German. It'll cost you approximately 2800 US dollars -- if you can find it.

It HAS come out in German. I have an article on Carl Barks in that version (Also in the Danish printing). The Scandinavian sets are of excellent quality. They are fairly similar. The German one is different looking, and the paper isn't as good and the quality of the books and binding isn't quite as good as the Scandinavian sets, but overall, it is still of excellent quality.

As far as I can see it, the European Carl Barks Collection was made in English and then translated into the European languages. So an English version shouldn't need so much effort. You can see it at sample pages on the German website:
http://www.barks.de/e3/e10/e20/e238/barks_band2_9.pdf
http://www.barks.de/e3/e10/e20/e239/barks_band2_10.pdf
http://www.barks.de/e3/e10/e20/e248/CBC-02-Snow-Fun_SE01.pdf
(more at www.barks.de)
But they should do the coloring again. The gradients are awful!
Quote from user: Roger NorthHow much does the Carl Barks Collection cost?
The new German Collection is USD 2100
The old English Another Rainbow Collection is USD 2400
Thanks for your help!! I will have a look at the books tonight or tomorrow and decide it on condition, price (perhaps I can bargain) and my thoughts on a future collection ;)

Quote from user: HedbergI wouldn't consider it a "con" that the comics are B/W, but the matter of fact a "con" that they are censored!
"Voodoo Hoodoo" appears in America indeed only censored since 1986. In Germany, however, that story had not only appeared uncensored still in 1985 in the Donald Duck special magazine, but also in 1991, again in 1993 and finally in the new "Carl Barks Collection".
I guess, with respect to politically correct censoring, Disney watches and "surpresses" the American, English-language publishers of Disney comics much more than the Europeans who can practically "do what they want" without Disney taking much notice of it. When the "Carl Barks Library in Color" album with "Donald Duck's Atom Bomb" where the last panel is censored appeared as "Barks Library" album in German in 1995, Ehapa simply printed a black-white copy of the last panel from the original comic book just after the censored one!
So when the "Carl Barks Collection" will be published in English in America, I really would not be surprised if "Voodoo Hoodoo" and all the other stuff is suddenly censored again. It maybe would really be the best if Egmont published that thing in English ...

I know about the German edition. We have a set at Jan's studio. I contributed an article to the German set, as well as to The Danish set. Many of the articles were written by Americans in English. In any case, I believe the entire Danish texts were translated into English, which were then translated into German. The Barks stories are already available in their original English, and the translated articles are in English, and the original English articles are in English. So, no translation will be required. The format has been set up, and the Americans can choose the colour scheme used by The Scandinavians or The Germans. So, some of the production cost has been removed. Of course, printing costs may be higher now than they were one, two and three years ago.

That sound good. So even a small circulation of 1,000-1,500 should be profitable. The German collection has a circulation of 3,333. I think there will be someone who jumps into that. Perhaps there are already negotiations ongoing.
I don't give up hope :)

I think, even while it's not perfect, the CBL is a wonderful set and is well worth the purchase. I do not feel that the black and white art is a con, nor that the books are over 20 years old.
The censorship is an issue, but is not done often.

Quote from user: Charlie BrownThe cons:
* all comics are printed in black and white
* the books are over 20 years old (not brand new)
* box 10 is said to have a bad printing quality at colored pages (cover art)
Another con of the old CBL in comparison with the new CBC (and its hypothetical future English edition) is that in the latter one "King Scrooge the First" and all Junior Woodchucks stories are presented in finished-inked versions of Daan Jippes instead of Strobl, Wright, Carey & Co. That looks muuuuuch better.

I'm surprised to hear this. Someone at Ehapa told me back then that the German CBC was printed together with the Scandinavian editions to save costs. The color elements are all the same so they just had to do a separate print run for the black layer which contains the texts.
Well, I haven't actually seen one of the Nordic books yet. In any case, I'm quite satisfied with the quality of the German paper.
