The first volume of Walt Disney Treasury contains "The Starstruck Duck". What is this story? I could only find this in Inducks: http://bit.ly/d2004-277 ... is it an unfinished story? :O
Also, which Don Rosa story is "Making the Grade"? I couldn't find it in Inducks.

They are going to release The Starstruck Duck?
I heard they rejected that story from Gladstone in 1988.

GodDAMN that is bee-yoo-tee-ful.
"Making the Grade" is this.
I'm THRILLED that we're going to be seeing "Starstruck Duck" in English, even if it's just sketches. Now, just for completeness's sake, how 'bout an English version of "Gyro's Beagle Trap?"

One other thing: I must note that I'm not so thrilled that Rosa's name doesn't even appear on the covers. I mean, maybe these aren't final designs, but if so--what the hell? Heed my words, Boom people who I'm sure are reading this: that's bullshit.

I promised myself I'd skip your posts from now on, but this one caught my eye and is so mindboggling that I just have to comment.
In 2002 Don Rosa went on strike... specifically because his name had been put on book covers (to sell more copies) without the publisher having gotten Don's permission to do so. Pretty much everyone who is even a minor fan of Don Rosa knows that. Before calling BOOM! on their supposed "bullshit", did it cross your mind that perhaps they haven't gotten Don's permission to use his name on those covers?!

...so you think he gave them permission for the L&T volumes, but not these. Right, then.
Maybe you should go back to ignoring me. Or, alternately, you could just keep being passive-aggressive. The choice is yours!

As far as I know, Don did not know about this "Disney Treasury" before those aforementioned listings appeared on Amazon. It also seems that he didn't know of the Lo$ reprint in advance, so BOOM! probably won't want to make the mistake again of putting his name on the cover without having collaborated with him on these books. Can't understand why they are so unwilling to cooperate with the artists on their publications, though. If Gemstone had acted the same way, BOOM! wouldn't even have had a perfect Lo$ book to reprint.

Meh. The more I hear about this, the more sordid it seems. If the above is accurate, it sure doesn't sound like Boom is acting with an excess of integrity. I can easily see why they would feel a certain reluctance to work with artists, though, and Rosa in particular. There's something decidedly awkward about saying "hi--we're going to republish your work again, and we're not going to remunerate you in any way. How about helping us out for free?"
EDIT: Then again, what do I know? They're really just doing what they can do. I shouldn't pontificate too much, since my information is admittedly not complete, but it strikes me that Rosa's case may simply have laid bare larger systemic problems with the way the industry works, which in turn are really more problems with its greater economic context. At any rate, I'm done thinking about this for the time being. The cognitive dissonance is unpleasant to me.

I'm kind of used to not seeing the author's names. They never do in The Netherlands, with four exceptions:
-De Beste Verhalen van Donald Duck (Donald Duck's Best Stories), it's a complete Barks series and he is mentioned in every comic book
-Alle Klassieke Verhalen (All Classic Stories), a hardcover b/w Barks series, so same as above
-Oom Dagobert 53-59, 67-68 (Uncle Scrooge), they reprinted Lo$ and mentioned Don Rosa in every issue
-De Grappigste Avonturen van Donald Duck (Donald Duck's Funniest Adventures), this is a series with one issue for every author
Still, I'm excited about the books.

Don has copyrighted his name, so Boom needs his permission to put his name on any of their books, or to reprint any of his text articles about his stories.

You can actually copyright your own name? Seriously? I didn't know. Great, there goes the name of one of my fan creations: Carl Banks.

I'm sure they can use Carl Barks name on some material reprinting his work if they get permission from his next of kin.

Quote from user: Roger NorthI'm sure they can use Carl Barks name on some material reprinting his work if they get permission from his next of kin.
In 1984, the German Disney comic book publisher Ehapa started a collection of albums with selected Barks stories, and one could read on the cover of every album: "idea and artwork by Carl Barks". That credit was dropped after some years and fifteen albums or so surprisingly while the edition continued--Carl Barks had got wind of the whole thing and refused to tolerate that Ehapa uses his his name that way. (With the great Barks work editions since Another Rainbow, Carls Barks was of course involved [and after his death his heirs, I suppose].)
It seems to me that the practice that the Disney publishers attract with the artists' names only becomes a "problem" (for the publishers) then when an artist feels bothered by it and raises protest. Until that happens, the publishers simply do use the names unconcernedly.
Don Rosa became a "problem" thus because he got quite sensitive and engaged with respect to the further publishing of "his" stories and the usage of his name with the time--after he realised that the publishers used it as they liked. As far as I heard Rosa began his "strike" when he saw in a European Disney magazine an ad for a Lo$ edition with an image of the cover where the name Don Rosa was printed in giant letters ...
But many other artists maybe don't care so much about it as Rosa. There are all kinds of editions with stories of dead and living Disney artists where the names appear on the covers produced ... I would be surprised if the artists and heirs are really asked and involved in every case there. The German Donald Duck monthly also for example uses to print the names of the artists in the magazine on the cover of every issue. :)
I can understand Rosa fully, however. His Duck stories sell quite well, and the publishers make good money with numerous special editions and collections of his work. The artists earns nothing with the reprints, so who wants to blame him if he does not want to give his name as a bait for free ...
