Hi all -- just a quick chime-in from Disney Comics HQ. The Boom pamphlet comics are available widely on regular newsstands and chain bookstores as well as amazingly supportive comic book stores. The $9.99 TPBs are available to all bookstores. We're working hard every day to get placement in other channels, too, but hopefully everyone who wants one can find one today! If you're ever completely stuck, you can always order subscriptions directly through Boom on their boom-kids.com site.
We'll try to keep everyone updated with distro news as it happens, and thanks for reading!

Thanks for the info, Jesse. As a longtime Donald Duck reader (and writer), it warms my heart to know that Disney is actively supporting the Standard Characters comic books. Of course, Disney themselves did a ton of entertaining comics under the old S-code program ...and later for Disney Adventures.

Jesse,

If the mass market sales are making such a dramatic difference, that's incredibly encouraging!

So what have been the total mass market sales for Boom! Studios' standard character books? I'm guessing that as the Books and Magazines Category Associate at DPW, you surely have easy access to those numbers---I mean, I had access to such data during my tenure at Gemstone Publishing, and I was the Art Director, fer cryin' out loud! ;)

Quote from user: kimba_1962This is sad. 739 copies of CHRISTMAS CLASSICS? Seven-three-nine?

Evidently, Boom!'s desire to grab more young readers has had only a modest effect... and the collectors' response has been slow, as well.

I will be interested to see the LIFE OF SCROOGE sales figures.

Chris

I'm sure LIFE OF SCROOGE will sell significantly better than CHRISTMAS CLASSICS. The Gemstone edition has been unavailable for quite some time, and it's an Eisner winner with good word of mouth even amongst critics who don't regularly read Disney comics.

I'm also curious how the hardcovers will fare outside of comic shops, as a $24.99 MSRP might just be a bit steep for a "kid's book" in the direct market. (Gemstone's softcover Christmas Parades, by comparison, were priced under $10 and sold comparably to Uncle Scrooge and Walt Disney's Comics and Stories from the numbers I've come across.)

Good to see you here, Travis! Yes, you're right -- crunching through those numbers is all part of the daily grind. :) We tend not to comment publicly on business matters unless it's to a journalist for an article, but I wanted to shed some light on where the comics could be found for anyone who has been having trouble. I'm always available to answer any basic questions that I can.
Definitely drop a line to Boom or leave a note on their message boards and if they're comfortable talking sales figures they certainly will!

If anyone's interested, here are some Diamond numbers for Gemstone's books to compare 'n contrast. These are based off CBG's numbers (as opposed to ICv2), so I can't attest to accuracy, and they seem to be missing some of the last issues (possibly due to the sporadic publishing schedule?)

Mickey Mouse and Friends

Donald Duck and Friends

Uncle Scrooge
http://www.comicbookpage.com/SalesEstimates/ChartDefinitions/ShowTitleChart.php?Chart=Title-CBG&Publisher=Gemstone&Title=Uncle%20Scrooge

Walt Disney's Comics and Stories
http://www.comicbookpage.com/SalesEstimates/ChartDefinitions/ShowTitleChart.php?Chart=Title-CBG&Publisher=Gemstone&Title=Walt%20Disneys%20Comics%20and%20Stories

Walt Disney's Christmas Parade
http://www.comicbookpage.com/SalesEstimates/ChartDefinitions/ShowTitleChart.php?Chart=Title-CBG&Publisher=Gemstone&Title=Walt%20Disneys%20Christmas%20Parade

Walt Disney's Vacation Parade

These numbers would still earn most of these books a place in the Diamond Top 300 in 2009. So Gemstone's numbers really weren't all that terrible for the direct market, either.

EDIT: Added this info as a point of reference to the first post as well, to keep a running tally of Disney comics sales in the U.S. from 2003-present.

Am I the only one who sees these dwindling numbers as a sign that Boom's modern approach is not working?
Charlie Brown
I'm not buying Uncle Scrooge or Comics & Stories from BOOM. I don't like the slim format and modern stories only.
But the "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" hardcovers seem to sell good. That speaks for a Barks Collection. In Germany they printed only 3000 copies. That should be reachable with an English one as well.

It's very depressing to see the numbers slowing down.....The titles have gone down in sales and gotten worse since Boom took over form Gemstone. I don't know what Boom's situation is, but I wouldn't be suprised by next year Marvel buys them out of their license and revamps the line. (if they see any profit in doing so.....)
Rodney
I don't mind the format, but I am not bothering to buy comics that have no stories that I want to read. I don't want to read about Donald Duck as a secret agent. I want to read about Donald Duck. Period.
Kneon
I'm thinking we'll see an upswing in duck comic sales in June, when they release Darkwing Duck and start running DuckTales stories in Uncle Scrooge -- if for no other reason than they'll strike a nostalgic chord with folks who grew up with those shows (but who don't normally buy Disney comics.)
Mcduck_Enterprises
Maybe, but that is only a temporary solution - Darkwing is a 4 part mini and the Ducktales issues are only a feature. I can't see this getting any better on that standpoint. I love my Disney's, but my LCS just has tons of unsold Boom issues....I think I'm the only one buying the titles....
