I won't be in San Diego myself... the only time I was there, I missed
the Dutch comic convention in Breda at that same day.

German Rosa

For whoever is interested: Rosa's Lo$ chapter 6 has been published in
this week's Micky Maus #31. Chapter 7 is announced for MM #34.

Gladstone's albums
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I bought Gladstone's album "The Carl Barks Library of Donald Duck Adventures
in Color" number 6. It's the first album in the CBLoDDAiC series that
contains giveaway stories: "Maharajah Donald" and "Peaceful Hills" (MOC 4),
"Atom Bomb" (Cheerio) and "DD tells about Kites". The quality of the stories
is like in the (B/W) CB Library: Atom Bomb is mostly re-inked by Jippes,
and "Kites" is heavily restored. The credits say no word about this.

The cover is derived from the first panel of "Maharajah", but with the
nephew's beaks shown. The beaks are awfully drawn, and it spoils the entire
cover.

Furthermore, Gladstone added some "interior covers", full-page drawings,
not by Barks, but by someone who should not be allowed to draw Ducks!
Terrible.

Album #7 continues the series of Four Color reprints (FC #159).

Long time, no do.

I'll skip my story of Barks in Copenhagen, it's old hat now, and I
guess Mattias saw a lot more than I did. In Tivoli a bunch of noisy
Swedes - dressed up as JWs - occupied most of the front row, while
Jan Lund Thomsen, I and a couple of others sat a few rows behind.
You could hear us go "NOOOO!", "BOOOOH!" and "yrk".

FYI:

The hillbilly character - a.k.a. 'Urtigao'/ 'Skogs-Ola' and
'Jesper Skauen' - in Denmark is (or should I say 'was'?) called
'Habakuk', which could be his, although misspelt, original name.
A Strobl story in AA&Co. #27/1969 also mentions his friend Amos -
not a very common name in Danish.

'The Billion-Dollar Stampede in 3D' by W. van Horn, reprinted
recently in Sweden, has NOT appeared in Denmark since it's first
publishing in AA&Co. #6/1993.

'WAR OF THE WEIRDOS'

In February I wrote in a 'future quote' of Gary Leach :

This is almost what has happened. Except...
Don has to redraw all the short guys as something completely different
from an indian, and rewrite all dialogue referring to them as such.
It goes without saying, but that's an *outrageous* attitude!
Those few of us who have read the story can try to imagine what it
would be like without canoes, wigwams, tomahawks, and Donald as the
Great White Hope.
Don's Longfellowian poetry (which the Danish translator either didn't
notice or didn't care about) would probably be deleted.
But Disney's policy is - however absurd - at least somewhat consistent.

clothes and a yellow tipped white feather, so they are totally
indistinguishable. Minor dialogue-changes :

page 11, panel 3 : "How!" changed to "Howdy!"
panel 4 : "They kneel like the American savages kneeled to
Colombus!" changed to "They kneel like the ancient
savages kneeled to the explorers!"
panel 5 : "Colombus McDuck" changed to "Explorer McDuck"
page 14, panel 4 : "asteroid apaches" changed to "asteroid aliens"
page 15, panel 2 : "chief mohawk" changed to "chief savage"

+ Dutch Donald Duck #28/1994
Translated from the original, the otherwise beautiful coloring dresses
all the red aliens in yellow, probably based on Barks' oil reproduced as
CF in the same Dutch issue.

+ I know of no art changes; all the 'savages' have mohawk hair-dos.

Though Barks knew that his stories would be read all around the world,
references to American geography, culture and history are legio.
Especially the Midwest

My advise, Don, is to tell them go fxxx somebody else to change it -
I guess you couldn't stop them, if you wanted to - and just wait them
out. That's what you do with the criminally insane...

HET COMPLETE WERK VAN CARL BARKS

A 17 volume/6000 pages B/W library in Dutch from Editions Loeb for
only 49,50 guilders each. At a total of approximately 500 US$, it is a
very cheap buy. But 6000 pages? The ad is illustrated with Barks' only
Mickey story, so that one's there, but how about the last 371 pages?
BTW: Is the publisher the one with the Latin and Greek bilingual texts
that stocked the shelves at university, when I was a philologist?

a new serial in Dutch DD, where Matena draws in a new style.
Again. This time it's reminiscent of Jean-Claude Mezieres ("Laurelin et
Valerian") or maybe even Jacques Tardi.

The library contains all stories that Barks INKED. So the Junior Woodchuck
stories (and a few others), for which he did the script only, are not
included. The editor plans to publish an 18th volume with those stories,
when and if Daan Jippes re-inked them. (They think Barks's pencils or
Strobl's/Wright's art is not attractive enough to publish.)

The publisher used my Carl Barks index to be sure that all stories were
reprinted. They are reprinted (for the first time anywhere?) in the
order that Barks MADE them. I tried to have them re-translate and re-letter
some of the stories, or use a better version if they had re-inked versions
before, but I didn't succeed much. A lot of giveaway stories (and the
Mickey story you mentioned) are in a re-inked form.

The library also contains all of Barks' published covers, except 2. They
copied the covers from the (USA) CBL, and put 9 covers on one page.
There are 2 covers missing because Thom Roep couldn't find them in the CBL
(and he didn't ask me 8-( ).

It's quite a good library, but a real Barks fan would want the original
English stories anyway...

The publisher is the same one that publishes the DD Weekly, formerly Oberon.
The initiative (and financial risk) was taken by the Amsterdam comic book
shop "Professor Ich" (named after a comic character by Fred Julsing).

He uses this style a few years now. He made comic versions of famous Dutch
children's books (Pietje Bell, Dick Trom, Kruimeltje). This new story
(Afke's Tiental) is another story in the series.

Please don't send such requests to the whole list. There are over one
hundred members of the list, and none of them except me can do
anything about your request anyway. There hasn't been much traffic
lightly, but anyway, please only send messages meant for all list

Gilbert Roser has made a new complete list of German publications of
Don Rosa stories, that is available at the ftp archive as
don-rosa.germany now. The old file with that name was structured
somewhat different, and since it was incomplete I think it's almost
redundant and I plan on deleting it. For the time being it's left
there as don-rosa.germany.old though.

I appended a couple of notes in that older file that weren't in the
new file to the end of it. I found one strange difference by the way.
In the older list it says that The War of the Wendigo was published in
MM 44-46/1991, but in the newer it says MM 45-47/1991. Which is
right?

The recent Westfield newsletter lists a new book called "The Life of
Donald Duck" which is a reprint of a 1941 book. Here's the entire
sales pitch:

"A reproduction of a rare 1941 autobiography of Donald Duck. This
special boxed edition includes a compact disc on which Carl Barks
interviews Donald. 72 pages, illustrastioned throughout."

Does anyone have or know anything about the 1941 book this will be
reprinting? Who did the illustrations and who wrote the book?

I don't know if I can justify paying $50 for this....
