I'm corresponding (through paper mail) with Didier Ghez from France.
I sent him floppies with the last years of the mailing list archives, and
he was very enthousiastic. He asked me to post his introducktion here.

Some of you may know Didier from his article about Barks' visit to Europe
in Carl Barks & Co. He is now working on a project about Don Rosa.

Here's Didier's introducktion:

I was born in Paris 23 years ago on May 19, 1973. I lived there for 8 years
before leaving France for Switzerland. I lived and studied 8 years in
Geneva then I was back in Paris for 2 years before entering a high
profile business school that sent me 1 year in Oxford, 1 year in Madrid
and 1 year in Paris again. I am now looking for a job, working part time
till I find for a CD-ROM editor called Edusoft. It looks as if I might
be working very soon as an executive for The Walt Disney Company (at
a marketing / training and documentation value adding job).
From a Disney point of view, I have been a Disney collector since I was
5 but started collecting seriously books and pre-war European items
(as well as original art) since I was 16.
I am now mainly interested in the research part on every Disney subject:
from Animation to comics, merchandise and theme parks.
I have visited Disneyland and Walt Disney World 3 to 4 times each and I
attend every DL Paris press event. I am contributing to many US Disney-
related publications: from the new Just the Write Touch to Fantasyline,
from Tomart's Disneyana to the late Theme Park. I have worked twice
during my studies as a trainee for The Walt Disney Company.
I also now have lots of friends within the Walt Disney company, including
Claude Marin, Pierre Nicolas and Ulrich Schroder, the editor of Picsou
Magazine (Uncle Scrooge Magazine) Pascal Pierrey and many others
(including Andreas Deja, Tony Beator, ...)
Finally, I am not only interested by Disney (far from it) but also by excellent
comic books artists, animation artists and many other topics.
I really hope to be able to afford an Internet connection at some point. I
would so much like to join the digest right now. I hope you will be able
to consider me as a kind of member, however. A backward, "underdeveloped"
member but still a member.

Didier is willing to answer any questions about Disney comics in France.
I already asked two questions: a French Don Rosa index will come my way
in the next mail, and he will ask Ulrich Schroder about his redrawings of
"King Scrooge the First".
I'll pass any other questions to him (by slow mail...).

You know, I didn't buy the "real" cover Gladstones, but they had the same
covers (now, I wish I had, but I was in a hurry, etc. etc.) I had heard they
had these "real" covers for regular bookstores, but the Books A Million here
has always carried the "coverless" Gladstones. I wonder if it's a big deal or
not?

Hi!

The Greek publisher of Disney comics sent me a package with all their
titles today. I never imagined there were so many different Greek Disney
comics. There are over a dozen different Greek series, each of very high
quality. The paper they're printed on is just perfect. It's the same kind
of paper, on which the new and reformatted WDC&S of Gladstone is currently
printed on, and I think all worldwide Disney comics should be printed on
that. The Greek Disney comics are relatively cheap too and there are
practically no advertisements in them at ALL! Regarding that, the sales-
figures must be very high. How else can those comics be of that high quality,
for such low prices and with no advertisements?
Komix is their 'collectors'-title, with Barks and Rosa stories.
Currently at number 97, this monthly comic features lots of articles about
artists and stories. Issues 100 will be a special edition and to celebrate
that, they're going to print the first part of Don's "Life of Scrooge" in
that same 100th issue, following with the other episodes in Komix #101
through #111.

DIDIER GHEZ:
Welcome to the list. You're the very first French 'member'. That's
great! I love French Disney comics. Especially Picsou Magazine, which is one
of my favorite comics. I've always liked the 'modern'-looking drawings of
Donald on the covers of Picsou. For those of you who don't know the covers
of Picsou, they always feature Donald in a very modern way, like with
sunglasses, surf- and skateboards, sport-outfits etcetera, and the covers
look if they were airbrushed. Very well done. And ofcourse ... Picsou
magazine always features the Rosa and Barks-stories, with editorial articles
about Rosa and Barks, which I think are very interesting most of the times.
Just great to see that in a European Disney comic! Together with the Greek
"Komix", I think Picsou is the best European Disney comic I've seen so far.
Although I can read the French articles in Picsou, I can't read the Greek
texts in Komix, which I think is a shame, because I'd very much like to know
what they're writing.

ALIPIO:

I've noted on the character page for Grandma Duck that her real name
was given as "Elviry" in WDC 122. Now Jonathan Markoff tells me that
Don Rosa has written somewhere that it was given as "Elvira" in WDC
121. Are both of these correct, or just one of them?

Exactly what stories are we talking about, anyway?

I just wanted to let everyone know that a splendid gathering of
disney-comics List members was held at the San Diego ComicCon,
as Torsten had arranged. It was a pleasure to meet so many readers
of disney comics in person! Special thanks indeed go out to Eric
Chun, who provided everyone with "disney-comics mailing list" lapel
buttons! I wore mine proudly throughout the rest of the show.
Thanks also to busy pros like Todd Klein for fitting our breakfast
meeting into their schedule. It was a surprise to have Dana Gabbard
drop by, too. I'm sorry Carey Furlong and possibly others were unable
to find our breakfast group in the coffee shop (where we pulled four
tables together, banquet style). I hope we can try again next year,
this time with our fearless leader Per in attendance!
