It's been lively lately at the Gladstone Corral. Shootouts all over the
place! Not that that has anything to do with the comics, but it's sure kept
us hopping! Our editor's Mac went loopy right in the middle of product
catalog production, which forced me into several hours maintenance with the
catalog's deadline charging at us like a Great White on PCP.
Then there were the Don Rosa albums to put together, four comics and two
USA albums to kick out the door, the Web site to update, and a dentist
appointment to reschedule.
Later that day...
Just kidding. I haven't gotten to the Web site yet, though I did do some
minor updating yesterday. A major revision is in the works, though, with a
new look. The current one is getting old and cluttered, and I just can't
look at the darn thing without cringing! If you ask me, the main reason Web
sites get redesigned is that the designer gets sick of the previous version
two minutes after it's uploaded. The only reason I don't update hourly is
time.

Well, after a month of near-inactivity, I finally played catch up with digests,
which had some level of discussion on my favorite Rosa duck story of all time,
"His Majesty, McDuck." Have I mentioned yet how happy I am to be seeing this
reprinted?
KRITON:
Oh, my, yes. I can see why you like this issue so much. You have a good column
and a half of it all to yourself. ;-)

Any plans for you to be drawing new covers on these albums?

What's the price point on these? $10.95 like the Life and Times albums?
I actually prefer paying the extra 2 dollars for a larger album. It just
"feels" better than paying $9 for a 32-age story with an article.
I just pulled out my issue of HMM to look at again. I didn't remember it as
being that bad, but then it was also one of the first duck books I had ever
read. I have it in front of me now.. Well, yes, it could be better.
"Appallingly bad" might be a bit harsh, but it isn't a Susan Daigle-Leach, for
sure. It's too bright in spots. There's a spot on a log a Beagle Boy has in
his hands that isn't even colored in. The shadows look wrong on the money
bin. The green for the grass on the hill looks wrong. I like $crooge's
more purple coat on the inside than the red on the cover. But I like the cover
design, otherwise. Maybe you all can recolor it for the cover of that
particular album?
Now everyone sit back as I recount my youthful indiscretion as pertains to some
early letterhacking of mine. When HMM first appeared in the summer of 1989 I
was only 13. My comic still has the lines on it from all the rereading I did on
it and all the drawing I used to do from it. (I think I still have one
particularly bad example of my drawing from it sitting around here somewhere.)
But the issue before, Uncle $crooge Adventures #15, prompted me to write my
first letter ever to a comic book company. It was the reprint of MicroDucks
from Outer Space. And I was maddened at the cover. (Actually, I think I
wanted to have a letter published, so I grasped for straws and this is what I
cam up with.) 8 years ago, I wrote an angry letter complaining that the cover
didn't accurately reflect the contents of the issue inside. the Micro Ducks
were the wrong color. They never actually landed on $crooge's beak in the
story, nor did they have flags like that. Something along those lines.
Thankfully, the people at Gladstone had the good taste to ignore my letter and
hopefully they consigned it to the trash heap.
Thankfully I learned something from writing that letter. I should try
letterhacking again someday. ;-)
ALL:
Is Gladstone officially no longer advertising on the back cover of the CBG?
The past three issues' worth have had assorted ads on the back cover and none
of them from Gladstone. Is this a Gladstone -- or more appropriately,
Bruce Hamilton -- cost cutting? (If so, I'm glad. Seemed like a waste of
money when one can't produce a $1.50 book with real success to advertise so
conspicuously.)
Also, are there any plans from Gladstone to specially commemorate $crooge's
50th birthday this summer?
I got the first couple of Gladstones today with the slick covers
back on them again. I have to admit - it's well worth the extra $.45. The
book looks right again. There are these lovely colorful text pages on the
inside front or back covers with letters from the readers. (I hope they stay
on the inside front cover like in Gladstone I.)
My local retailer asked me an interesting question today: He asked me if I
didn't think the title on "Penny Pincher" was a bit insulting. That is, isn't
Gladstone calling me cheap for buying it. I didn't think so, particularly
since, as the text on the inside mentioned, this is done in the $crooge-ian
style ;-), but what do others here think? Any particular thoughts on this one?
I also bought the Unexpurgated Barks book. It's an interesting historical
oddity. I really don't have much to comment on it past that. I haven't
finished reading it yet, but I do find it interesting.

Norwegian Donald Duck & Co is to be published in Lapland. It's going to be
in Sami-language and the first edition is set to 3000 copies. It's called
something like Vollej Vou if my memory don't fail me on this. So note it
down Arthur:-) I haven't been able to see if I can get hold of any of them,
but I'll shure try. If I do I'll buy some extra copies in case some of you
are interested.

Sorry folks, it showed off that my previous message was unfortunately wrong.
I called the norwegian Egmont group and they said that it was an error the
media had made and that they were only planning to give out such an issue.
He couldn't tell when, but he didn't think it would be soon. But when they
do I'll come back to it.

It wasn't re-WRITTEN, it was re-DRAWN. The Dutch editor thinks Strobl's art
is not good enough for the modern Disney comics. Other JW scripts by Barks
were also redrawn. Some of them by Jippes, and some by Mau Heymans.

The first of the 99 cent title is now out, and I liked it. Made for great
reading during lunch yesterday. A couple of quick questions it does raise,
however:
* What's the e-mail address for the letters column? I didn't see on listed.
* Where did the cover art come from? It's pasted up from Barks' art, but I
didn't see that Neighbor Jones pose anywhere in the comic. Was it taken from a
different story than was printed inside?
