Yesterday, I became the proud owner of a lithograph of the Carl Barks
oil "Time Out For Fun". I guess a number of lithographs became
available to Disney and are being sold at the Art of Disney locations at
Walt Disney World. Since I doubt I'll ever be able to afford a Barks
original, this has been something I've dreamed of owing for years. At
first I purchased "Lavender and Lace" because it was the one I liked
best at the first location and supplies appeared to be dwindling. I
then trekked to the other location to see what else was available. (I
was determined to own one, but if I was going to make the investment, I
wanted it to be the best I could get, I'd already missed out on one I
liked of young Scrooge mouthing off in the Klondike Saloon [don't know
the name of that one]). Finally, at one of the other locations I found
"Time Out For Fun" and I knew this was the one. I chose it because it
was more suited to my tastes than the simple family portrait of
"Lavender and Lace". There's more action in the picture, and I feel it
is a bit more representative of the stories I love. It wasn't until I
got home that I discovered it was a bit rarer than some of the other
choices. For one thing the edition size was only 100. (The others I saw
had edition sizes between 500 and 600). It was also the first
posthumous lithograph release, and it looks from what I'm reading online
like it almost never made it to market, with some prints being lost or
damaged. I haven't found any current information. Can anyone give the
full story on this?

I saw something I found rather troublesome during my most recent trip to
Wal-Mart (besides corporate greed gone wild!). I noticed two pairs of boxer
shorts, one with Mickey and one with Donald. My attention was drawn to them
because both featured word balloons. I thought, "Neat! Disney is finally
recognizing their comics!" THEN I read the captions! Mickey's said, "Is
Goofy a dog or what?" Donald's said, "Suddenly Donald realized that he
wasn't wearing any pants!" Now this bothers me for several reasons. First
of all, both jokes are old and stale; I remember hearing both jokes as a kid
in the early eighties. Second of all, I'm sure that neither joke was the
brainchild of the Walt Disney Company. They are REALLY lacking for original
ideas lately! Finally, both jokes make fun of Disney's core characters.
Even if one could make the argument that the jokes were good natured, I
would expect Disney to respect their core characters a bit more. The whole
boxer deal just epitomizes for me Disney's anything for a buck philosophy.
Ugh!
On a slightly different note, though, have any of you seen these? I ask
because the art on the shorts had a vintage, comic look, and I was curious
if that art was indeed vintage Disney.

Last fall, Don Rosa was a guest at FallCon2003 in the Twin Cities (Minnesota). He had a variety of prints for sale that were recreations of famous comic book covers but with the Ducks; ie. Action Comics #1 featuring Donald Duck instead of Superman.
Sadly, I ran out of money before I got to that booth. Does anyone know where these can be purchased? Any information is appreciated.

Yes, I think it's been said here (?) that those are prints of cover parodies
that I've done over the years for comic dealer friends and for auctions to
raise funds for the annual American Association of Comicbook Collectors
banquets. I stopped doing those full-color drawings for fans at conventions
due to "eBay abuse"... but as a convention guest I have to have *something*
to offer, especially since in America not that many people have the Disney
comic books for autographing. So I have those parodies of famous old comic
book covers.
But I have those at American comic conventions. I don't have the time or
desire to send them to people by mail. I would gladly bring them to European
or South American comic festivals, but I would never have the chance to mess
with them there! It's one thing being in America where I have someone come
to my table about once every 15-30 minutes -- it's another thing when I'm in
Europe and I have a line of people 4-wide going across the store, out the
front door, and curling around the entire mall, waiting 4-5 hours just for a
quick signature. If I was wealthy and had a staff of assistants like
everyone in Europe assumes I do, I could have my lackeys at adjoining tables
taking care of that sort of thing (wow -- selling T-shirts, posters, CAPTAIN
KENTUCKY books, wheee), but I'm a one-man operation just trying to earn
enough for that one man much less some staff.
I'll be in Detroit at the MotorCityCon on May 14-16 with those prints. Then
I'll be in Denver with them on August 28. But I won't have the prints on my
other trips this year to Brazil (May 21-31), Scandinavian tour (June 3-10),
Sweden (September), Norway (October), and Greece (November).

Brazil and I need to get back and try to someday finish this Caballeros
story.... I can't spend a leisurely 2 weeks on tour or anything. I know
where I probably will be according to the current plan:

Hi all!
I suppose this question is directed to Don Rosa, Jonathan Gray and whoever
other illustrator wishes to respond. What kinds of pencils/pens do you use to
illustrate comics? I'd like to look into it, but I don't really have a good idea
what kind of pencils/pens I should be looking for. Obviously what one
illustrator uses isn't necessarily the best for another to use, but it would give me
an idea at least. Thanks for your time.

My guess is that it's the Chirikawa necklace story, since it involves a flashback about Mickey and Pete in their youth. Also a very good story!
