How/why are certain characters declared dead/offlimits? Is there some creative/artistic reason for doing so, or is it some corporate decision? While I'm sure the decisions are made thoughtfully, from the outside looking in, some of the decisions about who is "dead" and who isn't seem sort of arbitrary or haphazard.

The reason is Ludwig Von Drake isn"t that popular in comicbooks that much altough he had had a small four color series and was used by Walt disney only for television.Dell later had his own merchandising and later he dropped out.I like Ludwig Von Drake hes really funny. Egmont won"t use him cause he isn"t that popular in Europe because America had more acsess to televison and comicbooks.I hate the idea considering he"s dead if I was at Egmont is say screw that and for Hortense who can really say there dead. Not there choice Barks and Disney are the creators they can say that not Egmont.
Besides I doubt that could get away with this.

Mr. Rosa:

Thank you for your time to answer my questions! I really appreciate it.
Here's hoping Ludwig can appear in a future story. (But I'm still looking
forward to your stories that are being published this year)

It will be some of each, with certain shadings in between. My wife
Susan is helping to coordinate this, sometimes providing new color,
mainly for the material that wasn't published in Gladstone's CBL in
Color, but also in some cases where the original Gladstone color files
were lost due to the inconsistent nature of archiving back in the early
'90s.

It is expected that there will be. However, the European editions are
the only ones in production, or even scheduled, at this time.

Hi Cord,

There will be a Carl Barks Collection in the Nordic countries as well; same format as the one you mention with colors.

Regarding the coloring, then Egmont started to use the American coloring for more and more books, including the Hall of Fame books, and has also used the coloring in the past. Some months ago I read that they were looking at the colorings done in the past, and deciding which were to done again. I guess it'll be a big surprise :D

Hope this answers your question.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

My personal opinion, if the story is good and if the characters are true
to their spirit, then who cares what characters are used in the story? A
writer/artist should be able to use whoever they wish if the above is
fulfilled.

I would agree with this wholeheartedly. I personally have a soft spot
for Ludwig von Drake and Emil Eagle, both of whom seem to be in
disfavour. I don't think of these characters as dead, just absent from
Duckburg for a while. In Emil's case, the artwork of his past stories
has made him seem a little wooden; perhaps it would take the zany
writing and artistic talents of someone like William van Horn to bring
him back to print.

No, as Don Rosa said Egmont decided to "kill off" Ludwig because they
don't like that character. It has nothing to do with whatever popularity
LVD may or may not have in Europe or in Disney comics in general.

While making comics, Barks never had any say in which character was dead
and which was alive. (I fail to understand why Barks would be seen as an
authority on Ludwig, anyway.) And yes, Egmont actually does have the
power to decide whether it wants to use Ludwig Von Drake. As Don said.

He isn't ? True he don't aperd in Egmont (since he's Death) but he still

I stil don't get what the Editors have agianst Ludwig. He's intereting
Charecter and a funy one (actualy much better in Cartoons thean in comics,
but still interesting).

Sure. In theory, Egmont could revive Ludwig tomorrow. I doubt they will,
but they could.

And I like Ludwig, too.
