because of that strike, but I don't think it was that
stupid, my friend: They were protesting against an
employee's raping.

In the early 1980s, Denmark got an Asterix calendar with some very short
Asterix comics. (One for each month, I think.) Did you or your
colleagues draw those?

When I was at Angouleme and saw Rene Goscinny's typewriter exhibited, I
discovered I simply couldn't stop smiling. Goscinny's writing was that
powerful!

I realize that many people think the post-Goscinny Asterix scripts are
not up to his standard, and I'd have to agree with them. But in all
honesty I can easily understand why Uderzo prefers to script Asterix
himself: after Goscinny's death, he is the person who knows the
characters the best. I've gone over a number of other currently active
comic book writers in my mind, and I can't think of any who I would like
to see script the book. Alternatively, Asterix could have been stopped
in 1977, but that would've been a sad loss to comics.

In spite of all of Uderzo's faults, having him script the book is the
next best thing to having Goscinny do it. And Goscinny isn't coming
back.

Yeah, Douglas and Whitewater team up in "Smarter than the Toughies"
(http://coa.inducks.org/story.php/x/D+2002-107//). Apparently, it was
printed in France last year.

This is gonna screw up your family tree, but... I had Douglas state that
Whitewater is his nephew. Sorry. I still think it was the right thing to
do, though.

Agreed. Jans, Gilles Maurice's Duck family tree is a lot of fun, but
don't rely on it for "facts" about Duck relationships. Every writer,
artist, editor, colorist, translator, publisher and reader has his or
her own interpretation of the Duck universe, and there is no one
interpretation that explains all the inconsistencies that have popped up
over the years. My own way of handling questions such as whether Moby is
the brother of Buckaroo etc. is to accept those "facts" I like as "true"
and dismiss those I don't like as "not necessarily true". The Duck
universe (and the larger Disney one, for that matter) is an individual
emotional experience for every single person -- and there is no absolute
truth when it comes to emotions.

I was wondering if any of the list members could help me in hunting down some comics that I'd like to give myself for Christmas.
First off, I'd like to know if there's any way to pick up back issues of Gladstone's old Uncle Scrooge Adventures in Color comic albums. Secondly, I'd like to know if the copy of Barks' TREASURE OF MARCO POLO story in the USA albums was the censored version (with "enemy" substituted for "rebel,", etc.) or the original version. I'd also like to know which USA album featured THE HEEDLESS HORSEMAN, which I believe was originally published in US 66.
I appreciate any help you guys can give me.

In response to Jerry Blake, Gladstone Scrooge Album #52 has US63 "House of
Haunts" and US64 "Treasure of Marco Polo", and Album #53 has US65
"Micro-Ducks from Outer Space" and US66 "The Heedless
Horseman". Gladstone also reprinted "Marco Polo" in Uncle Scrooge
Adventures #42. The dialog does not use the words "enemy" or "rebel". The
troops trying to overthrow the government associate with Soy Bheen = Prince
Char Ming are usually called Wahn Beeg Rhat's Brats. On page 14, panels 4
and 5, Huey Dewey and Louie use the word "guerillas". My comic book list
indicates I have a copy of the original Gold Key US64 Marco Polo, but I've
misplaced it, so I can't compare the reprints to the original right now.
"The Heedless Horseman" was also recently reprinted by Gemstone in
US340, April 2005.
