I am spending a few days at Giorgio's place. The other day we went
fishing and I did a nice portrait of him. He liked it so much that he
asked me to put it on his facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/people/Giorgio-Cavazzano/1586761926
He's obviously proud of it, and so am I as photographer, since plenty of
people have already commented on his page that he looks really good in
it. Today he asked me to send it to one of his contacts at Egmont (he
sometimes asks me to write his English-language emails for him when I'm
over here) and later we got a reply that this lady wants to use it in a
forthcoming book that will feature some works of Giorgio. It remains to
be seen whether they actually credit it when they print it (so far I've
had mixed experiences when various Disney publishers reused my work)
but, when the book eventually comes out, in Denmark and the rest of
Egmontland, you'll know where the portrait came from!
There will be more of this and related stuff, including Giorgio's voice,
on comicspodcast.blogspot.com one day.

Stories ordered by Gladstone were indeed chosen on the basis of their
visual quality. And all too often the English dialogue that came with
them read, especially in the early days, like something a five-year-
old would considered clumsy and unsophisticated. Whatever the reason
for that, we were not about to publish those stories verbatim.
Moreover, and what should be no surprise to anyone here, Gladstone
had standards based on the narrative skills of Carl Barks. However
unattainable those standards may have been, the rewriters knew that's
what they were shooting for and in fact wanted to shoot for,
constrained only by the parameters of stories' visuals.

Does this mean that they produced scripts that matched the visuals, but did
not necessarily have anything to do with the original story, i.e., something
like what Woody Allen did in "What's Up Tiger Lily?"

This did happen on occasion. I remember one DuckTales story I rewrote
that I just had to refurbish. The art was such that I was able to
recast the "villain" of the piece and change his motivation, which
amounted to giving him a motivation in the first place. The original
verbiage made the character out as nothing more than an inexplicable
idiot.

Where did you get this information from? From a shop, or directly from the
publisher?
When did anyone last get a new Gemstone issue?

Well, looking at my checkbook - the last issues that came out were on
December 10th - Uncle Scrooge 383 and WDC&S #698.
I sent two emails to Gemstone - regarding the current status of any of the
disney books. First email sent about three weeks ago. Got a generic reply
- 'We don't have any status'.
Second email - several days ago, I haven't heard a peep back. I see from
the gemstone website that when you click on subscriptions you just get the
regular back issues link. Despite Diamond's problems, Disney's comics
being marketed towards adults primarily - I really respect and admire them
for sticking to their Disney books - even if they may not necessarily be the
most profitable venture at least they stick to doing what them want out of
love for the hobby. I hope they're able to hang on and we can look forward
to more great duck and mouse stories from them.
Thanks Susan, David, Gary, Russ, and everyone else at Gemstone for the great
run of comics.

it's from Diamond Distributors -
the fan press has confirmed it - and the closing of Gemstone's office.
The official statement is that the Disney comics are being "re-thought"

Ah. What fan press site are you talking about? Can you provide a link?
I see that things have changed at http://www.gemstonepub.com/disney/ . Where
there previously was information about Disney comics still published by
Gemstone, there is now information about back issues. And when I click on the
"subscriptions" link, I'm not taken to a page about subscriptions.

On Amazon I find things like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Disneys-Comics-Stories-Graphic-Novels/dp/143955739X/ref=sr_11_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1235831928&sr=11-1
From the description, I take it that these are some kind of not-yet-published
overpriced hardcover reprints of Gemstone's Disney comics. Why are these being
published? Have they been published in the past too?

If I am reading that Amazon listing correctly, it's simply C&S in a
library binding. They are being published to be sold to libraries.
I would say that's a wise idea. Libraries are buying more graphic
novels, but want them in a sturdy format. Hence, library bindings.
I know, as a teacher, that my school often spends more for library-bound
editions of, say, novels because they're going to get used over
and over. The initial higher price is offset by a lower need to
repurchase the title in a year or two.
