I'm 27 years old and I only recently discovered the wonderful world of comics. As of now I've read 3 volumes of the Carl Barks Library by Fantagraphics and I'm currently reading the first volume of Gottfredson's library, also by Fantagraphics. Considering my excitement and pace, I'm pretty sure I will run out of comics from both collections pretty soon.
Considering how great these comics are, I thought about asking for suggestions on new reading material. I tend to gravitate towards the "classics". I never cared much for the whole superhero/Marvel stuff. Since I liked Disney comics so much, I want you to answer what other kind of comics you like to read.
People who like Disney Comics also like .... what?
I thought about Popeye. That's the only thing that comes to mind right now.

This question is only about comic books? Ok then...
I'm a gigantic ASTERIX fan! I can express how much I love this series and how well Ift stood the test of time (I mean there is only 33 issues of Asterix and yet It manage to be one of best comic book series on the planet) I trully recomend in British translation (I heard American version dumb the humor down a lot and cut some panels to make it more PC which is wrong in my opinion...)
I like other thing by Rene Gosciny like "Lucky Luke (which sadly didn't pass test of time that well) "and "Iznogoud".
Oryginal Popeye by Segar.... Yes! Some pretty brilliant stuff. It's complitly unlike the animated version - WAY more characters, very complex plot, way less predictible, and way more darker humor... I love Fleisher cartoons (heck I have the DVD collection) but oryginal strips are so suppirior
As Superhero comics go :
- Batman... mainly "Arkham Asylum" (best artwork ever), "The Killing Joke" (best Batman story ever), "KnightFall" storyline, "Court of Owls", "Long Halloween", "Year One", "Faces" and some incidental issuses. I'm among few people who isn't that crazy about "Dark Knight Returns" novel. It's great plot with some great moments but I honestly hate the artwork (It's annoying at moments) and to me most of quote-on-quote "satire" in the book is overrated (aka fans make it seams more then it is). Great Batman comic but I personally I just didn't enjoy it as much as some other Batman books and was never among my personal Top favorites (I still like Tim Burton movies more then Nolan ones BTW...)
- Marvels "She-Hulk" (I have a crush on her BTW... but Hush ;) )
-"Dare Devil"
- "Superman : The Red Son" is propably among top 5 greatest comics I've ever read...
and some other I read on ocasion like some Spider-man and Fantastic Four comics.
And Yhe! Anything by Allan Moore. "Watchmen" and "League of Extrodanary Gentelman" (first 2 books) are the best. This guy is the king of brilliant writing!
I use to buy "W.I.T.C.H." (but I guess it's counts as Disney comics) and I love "Persepolis" by Marzi Satrapii (I'm still supprise how much it's sucks You in with such simple art). I like "Tintin" a lot, but I'm not that in love about it like some other positions I named here...
Ow! And I'm fan of Charles Addams cartoons as well...

What other comics do I like to read? Hmmm...
Peanuts is a long-time favorite, but I'd recommend Charles M. Schulz's original strips over Kaboom's new comic book series, which isn't bad, but seems unnecessary.

A guilty pleasure of mine as of late is the Archie Comics Double Digests (Archie, Betty and Veronica, Jughead, Archie and Friends, B & V Friends (dumb title, BTW) and World of Archie). They're nowhere near the Disney books in quality, but they are light, breezy reading with (usually) very nice artwork, and I can buy them at the supermarket. How many other comics are that easily accessible? It's a bit of a nostalgia thing, as I used to buy the Archie comics at our local newsstand as a kid.

IDW has really impressed me with brining certain material to life - namely Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters. I've recently been indulging in some Dick Tracy from IDW and have really enjoyed that.
Fantagraphics is also in the same boat with their Peanuts offerings.
I'm not a huge superhero fan, but DC's Batman Chronicles is worth picking up. It's the earliest Batman comics collected chronologically.

People use the word classic to mean such different things. Cause I was in to DC from birth, and they predate Disney! But here's the stuff that comes to mind right now that I actually have experience with. Noting that, of course, I'm not recommending things that are impossible for a comics outsider or newbie to pick up and enjoy.
New Teen Titans is great stuff, as is the Dennis O'Neil era of Batman (No Man's Land is AMAZING!). There are good comics in DC but you have to kind of have someone with you to start out with so you can find your footing and stay away from the "Yeah, that one writer we don't really talk about..." thing. Any of the DCAU adaptations are surefire hits though.
My non-superhero stuff that I'm reading right now... hmmm... well, I certainly can't help but recommend The Pertwillaby Papers! Amethyst Princess of Gemworld's compilation is a great piece of work, and cheap. I wish I could get the color version but everybody's got a budget.
I've ordered but have not yet read Zot!, which was done by the guy who literally wrote the book/s on comics.
The old Sonic comics are great! I haven't read the UK version but I know people swear by the stuff. For me it was the US version.

The fact that it wasn't handcolored makes me weep, and the art's going to kick up drastically in the second volume since he knows he won't be able to handcolor it.
Mega Man is occasionally SLIGHTLY hampered by the speed in which they go through arcs, but it has only improved as I've been reading it over the last two years. Funny, fun, and a great adaptation of the game.
Newspaper strip wise...

Calvin and Hobbes, which is for my money unquestionably the greatest newspaper strip ever created.
I'm very much a fan of webcomics. Order of the Stick, Captain SNES, Gunnerkrigg Court, Girl Genius, Kid Radd (a comic that I wish had a LOT more love than it does). Gunnerkrigg and Order of the Stick in particular, my God, I love them so much.
This topic isn't fair, because I want to order more comics now.

Truth is, most of my non-Disney reading is non-comics reading, but I like John Stanley's Little Lulu, and (almost so obvious as to go without saying) I like Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes. Web-comics-wise, I dig Hark! A Vagrant and Subnormality.

I know that the Muppets are now part of Empire Disney, but since the Muppets didn't originate as Disney characters, I don't think of the Muppets comics as Disney comics, so I'll mention them here. Muppet King Arthur was very funny (and well drawn, once Silvani took over!), and Muppet Sherlock Holmes was a hoot, for Holmes fans; both are available as trade paperbacks.
Astérix: I liked it in high school (read it in French), but haven't read it since (that's not to say I wouldn't like it if I did!)
I am amazed in retrospect that in junior high/high school (c. 1970) I read Legion of Superheroes, given that the "superpowers" of the two female Legionnaires were (I kid you not) shrinking and becoming invisible. In high school/college I also read Spider-Man, where I appreciated the character struggles of Peter Parker and enjoyed the witty dialogue during the fights.

No. Pogo started in comic books before the newspaper strip. They were Albert The Alligator and Albert & Pogo in "Animal Comics"
