Absolutely. For me it's a matter of the art (I am a sucker for that), but it's generally just doing a great job of creating an enjoyable comic rather than something designed only for fans.

George Herriman's Krazy Kat is also a strip I enjoy reading. It's so simple, yet so complex.
Carl Barks' Barney Bear stories are worth looking up for Disney fans (but that one may be obvious for knowledgeable Barks fans).

Gotta disagree, I like the Barney Bear stories quite a bit. Don't like them as much as the duck stories, but I really enjoyed reading them. But of course, they're not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

I have a mix fillings about the new Asterix books (I just read it today).
The artwork was fine on it's own, however at points the characters where very difrent from the usual Uderzo style ("offmodel" is the term I guess?) which was a bit distracting. I also hate the green skin color on the villian, but what you gona do? BTW -> I love the desing of the main scotish girl was. Very cute.. Kawaii as my manga fan friends would put it ;)
As for the script there where some good jokes here and there (few of the best gags are left for the last 1/4) and I like that Ferri played with the characters a bit rather then reducing them to their typical running gags. However some parts (like the subplot with the Roman who came to count the villagers) just warent funny too me.
Unlike most nations Asterix visit the Picts felt undercharacterised. In a way this is propably the most policital correct of Asterix book (especially for a book involving Asterix visiting a diffrent country) as there was little jokes invoving stereotypes but at the same time there where little to no "moder refrences" and cultural satire Asterix is know for. Mostly it's your typical folk tradition refrences but nothing tongue in cheek, which is a shame.
There where few elemets I didn't get (like at one point Obelix finds a odd looking helment and carries it throu out the story for no reason just to give it to one of the characters at the very end... Maybe there was some stuff that got lost in the translation?)
The plot was just ok, maybe a little doubtful at moments. There was one particular plot point (character) I would normaly say was off-character for the series (and I won't spoil it)... but after the last Asterix books that involve aliens this was just a small distraction.
Overall "Asterix and the picts" wasn't bad, it was simply weaker then usual level of humor I expect from Asterix but to be fair the new "creators" did their best to keep with the spirit of the seires. And there is something pleasnt about the overall tone of the book... I think it's a better start then for Uderzo with his first solo story "Asterix and great dive" (which I found both weak and out off character for the series)
