Years ago before eBay I used to collect Uncle Scrooge figures. I would buy every Uncle Scrooge figure I could find. There weren't that many around and the challenge of hunting him up was a lot of fun. I'd find him at collectable shows, thrift stores, comic book stores, from other collectors, at Disneyland, and through mail order. Other collectors and I traded photos of our collections and we started exploring contacts throughout the world in our hunt.
After a while there got to be too much. First I eliminated the Christmas Carol Scrooge. He just wasn't a real Uncle Scrooge in my mind. Then went paper with just the picture's of Scrooge such as lithos, puzzles, and posters. Duck Tales was exciting at first but then there was too much of that, too. I also couldn't get into Webby, the different Beagle Boys, and Scrooge with the blue coat anymore so that area got eliminated.
When the Always Another Rainbow Uncle Scrooge came out the price blew me completely away. I think it was like $3000 or $5000 if I remember. That was crazy. I somehow had some extra cash, though, and managed to order two. I sold the second one back to Another Rainbow at a large profit without taking delivery and this got me the first one for free. It was still too much money to have in it and I soon sold it as well.
I never quite liked the beak on it and it was too fragile to really enjoy. It actually got damaged by UPS with the rifle breaking off and I think I did pretty well with the insurance if I recall. I think I got my money and got to keep the nicely framed litho which I really like but somehow don't have anymore either. A dealer who bought the damaged statue at an auction tracked me down and bought the litho from me with the matching number. I never had enough money to afford to hang on to the really expensive stuff.
Later I had some of the Carl Barks bronzes, the diving one, the canon, and Donald Duck in Bullet Valley. Same story, trying to make a house payment or something, and they all got away from me. I like these and if I could really afford them I would have those three back again as well as the bronze Scrooge head. After seeing the bronzes all my other Scrooges never looked that great anymore so they've also long disappeared. I had a good time with them all and even published a couple fanzines called The Scrooge Hunter (one issue) and The Duck Hunter (two issues).
Recently a friend wanted me to list his extensive Uncle Scrooge collection for sale on eBay for him. This took quite a while as he had over 500 Scrooge's. I slowly started to get hooked on collecting again as there were a few I just couldn't resist. His Eureka Scrooge was damaged in shipping and FedEx lost the litho to it. The pick is just too fragile. The buyer was refuned the money, FedEx gave us some money for the damage (no where near what they should have as it was professionally packed by the mailroom, safely double boxed and insured). I made up the difference, my artist friend fixed the pick, and I could care less about the little litho. It sits on my desk and I guess that was the beginning of getting hooked again.
I had read all the Barks stories many times but after I had stopped collecting hadn't read many of the newer Don Rosa stories. My friend had some of those and I got those as well. Since then I've picked up some others and I'm just missing a few. They're always a treat to get and I'm taking my time buying the last ones on eBay or finding them at comic book stores. I slowly getting hooked again. I even lucked out and there was a comic con near me and I went and had the real pleasure of hanging out with Don Rosa.
This brings me to the Dark Horse figures. When I was selling my friend's collection it reminded me of my earlier collection. He bought almost everything regardless of almost whether he even liked it or not. It's pretty easy to get hooked and do that. You try to get everything and be complete. I have friends like that with huge Uncle Scrooge collections worth hundreds of thousands of dollars with expensive statues on down to Duck Tales bedroom slippers. In my mind I think I'm past that stage right now.
I want to collect what I really, really like. I also want to be able to have fun displaying my figures. I don't want just a million Uncle Scrooges. I'd like to see some of the other characters, too. I also want my figures to look like the ones in Carl's stories. I don't want to pay a million dollars for them (though I would buy the bronzes if I could easily afford them because they're nicely done.). The Dark Horse figures fit the right criteria for me. Plus, they are aged and to me even look like they were made at the same time the comics were printed. I like all six of the first series and they look great together. They're also not so expensive that I can't afford to hang on to them, too. (I don't give a hoot about the tins they come in but who cares.)
The second series I feel completely different about. I don't like them at all. Maybe Scrooge with the cash register is okay. It would be nice to have the nephews to add to the first series but they just don't grab me, either. So I really like the first series, but I'm not going to get any in the second series (I haven't seen the 6th one yet, though...). I'm not going to fall into the trap of becoming a completest again. I just want to have some things I really like and that's it.
I definitely agree Flintheart Glomgold (or a Junior Woodchuck) would also be my choice for the sixth character in series 2.

Hey there, Patrick - I completely agree in general with the whole "collector mentality" situation. I have always been immersed in something...baseball cards, Star Wars figures, skateboard decks, DVD's, comics, plastic models and so on....after awhile, my focuses got narrower and narrower.....I ended up keeping some of my favorite things and selling most of the rest, whilst focusing on my comic book collection in the end......which pretty much then became completing the full run of Uncle Scrooge...(which I did complete about 5 years ago,)...then onto Donald Duck....(which never got finished,). I've been thrilled by the hunt, disgusted in the money spent, and had most of it all, but in the end, I have kept what I really wanted in the first place....just my scrooge run. It's easy to get sucked in, it's hard to let it go.....and by the way, I do have a copy of Duck Hunter #2..(never found #1,)..great read for its time. Thanks.

Hi McDuck_Enterprises, I noticed you said you have all the First Series figures. They're my favorite and I like them far better than the second series ones. My question and curiosity is if you just keep the first series figures are you going to buy the nephews from the second series to go with them? I'm debating the whole thing, but I don't think I will get the nephews, though, as they just don't seem to do it for me. I was curious what others thought.

I'm a completist when it comes to what I focus on....Series 2 is all pre-ordered for me right now......I have the full run of Uncle Scrooge comics, the life size Disney statue of Scrooge, a few signed prints and sketches from Don Rosa and these Yo! Studios statues....nothing else. They do cost a bit, but I really like them....I don't get all carried away with getting all sorts of other Uncle Scrooge or duck stuff....I almost had a full run of Donald Duck #26 - present, but gave up on it because it was too expensive to keep.....I think these statues are the epitome of Carl's creations.....regardless if they are a little off here and there, this is about as official Carl Barks merchandise you are going to get cheap nowadays.....my 2 cents.

I actually started collecting seriously only about 10 years ago. I??ve collected 12-inch military figures (just a few), 1/72 scale military armor and aircraft (just a few), Star Trek ships (mostly small scale), and of course Disney comics. I never got into cards, or anything else. I have compiled complete (truly near mint to mint) runs of US #210-383, US Advs. 1-54 and complete runs of DD Advs. (Gladstone and Disney). I??ve quit collecting Disney stuff, though... Boom! is just terrible. And the statues are too expensive??had there been only one series I??d have considered it.
My latest passion, having been re-ignited by the 2009 movie, is Star Trek. Still, I don??t collect very many Trek things, just some of the small scale ship replicas from all the series and movies.

Also built scale models for many, many years.....filled up 2 curio cabinets and had to quit due to space.....Collected Topps baseball cards from 1984 to 1991 - have all complete sets.....it's nice to branch out but my main focus has always been my Scrooge collection....Boom! stuff has been terrible, but sticking in for the long run.

I was just looking at the photos of all these figures on Amazon. I have bought all of Series 1 and really like them. Series 2 I'm not so sold on. I'm still waiting to see what number 6 will be, though. I guess if I was to pick up anything in Series 2 it would be the nephews as they really belong with the other figures I already have. I so wish they had been Woodchucks. Anybody else have any more opinons of these figures? They were kind of costly for me (though cheap by past Barks' figure standards) so it's fun to talk about and enjoy them.

How does anybody like the Series 2 "Moneybag" Scrooge? Anyone heard yet what the last Series 2 figure will be? Will there be a Series 3?

Personally, the one with the nephews is the one I dislike the most of all the 11 released/planned. The propositions of the figure is to slim compared to the rest in the series in my opinion. Apart from that, I agree that series 1 is better looking overall.

Thank you for your opinion on the nephews, reybr. I totally agree. I have all 6 of the first series and would really like to add some nephews, but I just haven't liked the ones that much in Series II. (Actually, I haven't liked any of the figures that much in Series II.) Looking at them again after reading your comments I notice now how the nephews do look skinny and out of proportion in size to the other figures.
I'm still curious what the last figure (#6) will be in Series II. I'm doubtful it will be any more nephews so I'm hoping for a Glomgold. I'm probably just dreaming, though. Anyone heard?
Mcduck_Enterprises
Yeah, I agree series 2 certainly ain't series 1 again......not as good. Nothing heard on the 6th statue yet. Still holding out for Glomgold......(if they know what's good for them.)

Actually, another Beagle Boy in a different poise would be kind of fun, too. A couple of them would look more menacing. What made me think of this is Amazon is listing one today at $29.95 plus $5 postage. I started thinking... hmm... two?
Patrick Hanifin
Amazon's site today is offering a Beagle Boy or a Gladsotne figure for $19.95 each plus postage. Regularly $50. That's a good deal!

still nothing on series 2 statue #6........My Klondike Scrooge series 2 #1 statue is en route to me from Entertainment Earth. Looking forward to getting it.

AMAZING!! The Beagle Boy and Gladstone are now down to $14.98 each on Amazon! I should point out I bought three of my figures from Amazon. Two of them had dents in the cans when they arrived and one of those had obviously been opened previously. They were easy to return, though (with free postage), and they replaced them immediately with perfect ones.

I just got the Series 2, Klondike Uncle Scrooge statue (really nice statue, btw) and the tin shows only 5 character statues in this series. (the one's that have already been previewed.) I am not sure, but there is no mention of a 6th one on Dark Horse's website or anything. I'm thinking that Yo Studios is only making 5 this time around.....which bites because I am not sure why they had to do 3 Scrooge's this 2nd series and no Glomgold?...not to mention 11 statues in total is an odd number to end in. Maybe they'll do a 3rd series of just 4 and make it 15.... Ah well.
