We knew, thank to Guido Martina and Giovan battista Carpi, that Scrooge has a twin brother, but I discovered today a Scrooge's brother mentioned in a Taliaferro strip:

That must be true Sigvald but two other artists gave him at least two half brothers.

Hi Sigvald. Are you referring to http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=Qus%2FCBL+6I ? If you are, then note that the tree doesn't show all characters in the Duck family (like the father of Huey, Dewey and Louie, for instance). There must be Duck family members other than the ones Barks showed. Therefore, Scrooge could easily have a few brothers without it contradicting Barks' Duck family tree or the thoughts behind it.

Barks' family tree was made for his own reference; it never was intended to be "canonical." Rosa (who I suspect will be brought into the conversation soon) himself ignored/altered parts of Barks' tree himself, making Goostave Gander and Daphne Duck Gladstone's birth parents, when Barks had Goostave and Hortense McDuck as Gladstone's adoptive parents after the death of Daphne and her husband Luke Goose from overeating at a family picnic (Luke became Gus Goose's father on Rosa's tree).
Personally, I like the idea of creators being able to introduce Duck relatives out of the blue, without too much thought for where they fit on "family trees." Barks did this with Scrooge, Gladstone, and others--had he followed the strict "canons" a lot of fans seem to prefer these days, we wouldn't have some of his most memorable characters.
P. G. Wodehouse, another of the greatest writers of the 20th century, had a long-running series of short stories in which the tale-spinning Mr. Mulliner would relate the adventures of a brother, nephew, niece, cousin, or the like. Wodehouse never explained how one man could have so many relatives, or the connection between the uncountable Mulliner nieces and nephews, and...he didn't need to. The stories worked well without it, and I think Duck stories work well without a rigidly-imposed family tree in the background.

I think the rest could be edited by the author when he likes, he can add relatives, etc...
"Gyro Gearloose" isn't talking about a basis or about altering it. He's saying that it should be possible to add new characters to the Duck family tree. Like Barks and, before him, Taliaferro did.

No one wants to remove Scrooge from existence. Some people want to bring new Duck relatives into being.

Hortense was Donald's mother. Daphne and Luke were Gladstone's original parents. It was Matilda who was married to Goostave. They changed it around so that Goostave was Daphne's husband and Gladstone's biological father.

I just realized that I've never read a story with Gideon, and don't even know what he looks like. Strangely enough, googling him brings up no images. Can someone post a link to a picture of him?
Also, Grandma seems to have been redesigned somewhat in that strip. Did Taliaferro use this version of her (smaller eyes, different hairstyle) a lot?
