So...is Scrooge's Brother Heavy? (And when I mean Heavy, I mean from this hit song by The Hollies)...

The purpose of this topic was that of estabilish if this character is Gideon, Scrooge's twin or another Duck who we can call "Taliaferro McDuck".
In 1966, Gideon and the twin had already been created, but I don't think Bob Karp did know that. Maybe Karp and Carpi were relative and the Italian one told the other about Scrooge's brother, but I don't think absolutely!
It would have been nice if someone would have asked Barks about this strip!

I think that when people wrote many of these stories (especially the earlier ones), they really didn't assume that people would remember (or even save) most of them, and just threw in whatever characters they needed to tell a story. Many cartoon characters have family members who just show up, and then are never heard of again. The Disney Ducks just turned out to be so popular that such storytelling devices can come back to haunt a writer and create problems for future writers and long-time fans. Other than the core group of reoccurring Duck family members, I usually just disregard "one-shot" uncles, nephews, mothers, fathers, etc. from being "cannon". I'm just glad they never decided to try making some of the DuckTales cast (Launchpad, Fenton, Mrs. Beakley) into unofficial relatives with the possible exception of Webby, who many writers seem to think she really is Scrooge's niece.

No one has ever suggested, that Launchpad, Fenton or Mrs Beakly were related to Scrooge. And even Webby, even though she calls Scrooge "Uncle", is not a real relative. Not to mention how none of these characters have really made it to the comics anyway.

Pardon? I thought there were tons of Ducktales stories out there. Or did you mean stories with classic lineup of characters?

And to make it all even more odd in "Duck Tales" Scrooge is an only child... ;)

Which of course makes Donald's very existence impossible ....
Was DuckTales explicit on this point or did it leave some wiggle room?

Of course Scrooge wasn't an only child. How could he have been an uncle, if he didn't have a sister or a brother?

I suppose that BBJ is talking of the two episodes which show us Scrooge's life (which is quite similar to Rosa's Lo$).

I don't believe it addressed this point outside of "Curse of Castle McDuck" and "Once Upon a Dime." I wouldn't put much stock in the latter story; it is a mess. The former is more intriguing and a bit more like the early chapters of Rosa's LATO$M. It leaves open the possibility that Scrooge's parents had their other children after they emigrated to America. So, if you can accept the whole family coming over the water... though I'm surprised that they left so much stuff behind in wee Scroogie's room... :-)
