Quote from user: Dutch Duckfan Down UnderI am also a fan of his background explanations. But they're not in here. :(
Too sad. So I won't buy this book. I really hope there will be a "official" Don Rosa collection in English as well soon. Perhaps Fantagraphics picks this up, if the Carl Barks collections is a success (and it will be a success :)).

For what it's worth, it appears that the first volume of this book is "no longer in stock" from Boom. It was showing to be in stock from Amazon.com though. I didn't want to chance it and went ahead and ordered it from eBay. If you are interested in buying some of these Boom books for your collection, the time might be now, rather than later, as we all know there weren't many copies of any of their books made.
Boom is showing a second volume of this series but, with everything up in the air with the Boom Classic books, who knows? I really enjoy Keno's work and look forward to any opportunity to add his work to my collection, even though I have all the originals. It is my hope that someday his Uncle Scrooge work will be collected in hardcover for the US market besides the excellent collections of his Life and Times series.
I can't wait to enjoy the Fantagraphics Bark's collection in the near future.
Have a great evening :)

If anyone should make a Don Rosa Library in English, it should be Fantagraphics.

Don Rosa is 60 years old? Where does the time go?

Happy birthday to Don Rosa! I have to think back now to the posters he made for Scrooge's 60th birthday.
When Carl Barks celebrated his 60th birthday, he was busy spending the day working on a story which introduced a now very familliar character.

Happy Birthday, Don Rosa!! Thank you for creating so many exciting and enjoyable stories!

You're talking about Magica De Spell. I didn't know Carl Barks created her on his sixtieth birthday. I wonder if Don Rosa would have come up with a new character if he was still doing stories. Probably not.

Well, not exactly on his 60th birthday, but it's real close. Barks' 60th birthday was on Monday, March 27th, 1961. He delivered this story to the publisher on Monday, April 17th, 1961. The chances are quite big, I think, that he was working on this story on his birthday.

After an Inducks search I find some things Barks did around his 60th birthday.

The first story with John D. Rockerduck he delivered one week before his birthday (March 20, 1961).
On his birthday, he delivered this cover, for Uncle Scrooge 37:

Two weeks after, he delivered these two covers (both April 8th, 1961):

The Midas Touch was delivered on April 17th, 1961:

Now, the only things Barks delivered in 4 weeks (between March 20 and April 17, 1961) was 3 covers. The Midas Touch is a 17-page story. So, it seems to me that after he had finished "Boat Buster", he started on this story, one week before his birthday. I think it's quite possible that this was the story he was working on, on his 60th birthday.
Of course, being a freelancer, he could also have taken a day off for once. :)

It's still a big coincidence Dutch Duckfan. The first appearance of Magica De Spell and the first appearance of John D. Rockerduck were pretty close together.

Barks was probably in good spirits at that time and merry to put some new freshness into his comics with new and interesting characters. It had been just one year ago that he got the famous "first fan letter" from John Spicer and that he actually realised that there were quite many people around who highly appreciated his work.

Barks' Rockerduck was never meant to be anything more than a tossed-off, one-shot character. I very much doubt that his creation had anything to do with Barks' age.

Maybe you're right Geox. It is a shame that Barks only used John D. Rockerduck once. Maybe he did it because he forgot about Flintheart Glomgold. The Italian artists seemed to have used him quite a bit in their stories.
