Quack!
After some local tests with only me as the list member I've added
those who have said that they would like to become members of a Disney
Comics mailing lists if I created one.
Here it is! Mail to disney-comics at student.docs.uu.se to get to
everyone. (That's not many as of now, but following this post I will
advertise about the list on various places, so hopefully there will
soon be more members.
The list is suppossed to be for all Disney comics: old and new, comic
books and comic strips.
As usual, things for the administrator (me!) goes to
disney-comics-request at student.docs.uu.se. Write there to subscribe,

The Westfield newsletter just had some good news in it. Gladstone will
be producing even more Barks graphic albums, in addition to the 51 volume
"Complete WDC&S" and the 2 volume "Complete Uncle Scrooge 1-pagers". The
next volume will include the Firestone Holiday issues, I believe, with more
on the way.
Gladstone is also producing a new Don Rosa graphic album, due out within a
month or so. It is not new material however, but reprints or recent
stories.

Before Don Rosa started working for Disney, he produced comic strips for
a local paper in Kentucky. 3 reprint volumes were published by Rosa himself
of the adventures of Captain Kentucky. Does anyone have a spare volume 2
or 3 they would care to sell? Rosa also published a title called "The Art
of Don Rosa" (or was is the best?). I have volume 1 of that title, and was
wondering if anyone knew if other volumes existed.

Howdy, everyone!!
Speaking of comic strips, what Disney comic strips are found in you local
newspapers?
A local newspaper available in New England, called The Middlesex News, carries
the Mickey Mouse comic strip in the Sunday paper. The Boston Globe used to
carry a Mickey Mouse strip but has since discontinued. Although Walt Kelly's
strip, POGO, isn't Disney, it was carried for a few years in the Sunday Boston
Globe and is still available in the dailys.

Disney comics isn't discussed that much on the net, and when it is,
the subject more or less gets drowned among more common subjects, like
the parks and the movies in rec.arts.disney, and super heroes in
rec.arts.comics[.misc]. "About a fantastic detective that jumps over
giant buildings, smashes brick walls with his fists! Knocks over
whole armies with his breath! You *know* that *no* man could be that
strong! Why don't you waste your time doing something useful?"
So one rationale for this list is to collect the Disney comics
discussion in one place, where even people like me, who doesn't check
r.a.d. and r.a.c. that often, will see it.

LISTING OF PAST & PRESENT DISNEY REOCCURING CHARACTERS
This listing is a fairly exhaustive compilation of current and recent, new and
some old Disney Characters based on the "mainstream" characters (i.e. Mickey,
Donald, Pluto, etc.), Syndicated cartoons (i.e. Ducktales, Tailspin, etc.), to
include subordinate characters with re-occuring roles. This list is probably
not as complete as I'd like it to be and I welcome any possible suggestions,

While the series does not specifically state where Goofy and Pete lives, they
have traditionally lived in the same hometown as Mickey Mouse. Disney Comics
have recently revealed that name to be Mouseton).

if they have had only one appearance and then are forgotten.

Gladstone subscriber who became disgusted at the assembly-line
Disney products, and I dropped all of the titles about two years
ago.
I understand the quality is now on par with the former Gladstone titles,

Here is perhaps some reasoning to my madness (or is that madness to my
reasoning).
I am inclined to agree with you about Emil Eagle and Glittering Goldie. They
do indeed fit the qualifications I have listed. In fact I recently came across
a book of reprinted Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck comic strips that had Emil
listed. Prior to that I thought he was a recent creation of the Disney Comics
line.
As for Mrs. Brer Bear, I have seen her once, but I don't know if she's
appeared before.
I know that Donald's "F" stands for "Fauntleroy", but what does Zeke's "M"
stand for?
"Ezra" Scrooge's name was listed in a book I have...darn it...I've packed it
away, but as soon as I relocate it I will send the info.

and what story she appeared in. As for my source for the idea that she
actually has "tow" neices, that came from David Smith at the Disney Archives.

reasonable to assume that she does have two neices when one compares the Duck
family with the Mouse family there seems to be a logic to their madness, too.
For example there are three nephews and three neices in the Ducks and two
nephews and I guess two neices in the Mouses.

last name please post it or forward it to me and I'll be happy to change the
list. It's funny but there is a lot of inconsistency in the Disney Universe
which I suppose explains why I have been told by Mr. Smith that they do not
intend to do a "Who's Who" type reference book for Disney characters (Actually
I think a better working title would be "Hoozoo" which was the name of an
early Mickey Mouse book that presented Donald Duck, Jenny Wren and others at
the farm long before they appeared in cartoon features).
The reason I did not include such characters as Little Toot, Hiawatha, Bongo,
Scamp, Mad Madame Mim, the AristoKittens and others is because I believe their
proper listing would be under the animated Full-length feature film they are
from. Despite the fact that they repeatedly appear in Disney Comics along
with Chip' Dale and others, they are usually one-shot stories that do not have
ties to any of the continuing themes. The characters with which I have made
an exception are the "Brers", the "Wolfs" and the "Pigs". Although they did
originally appear in cartoons, they regularly appear in the comics and I've
noticed that the Three Little Pigs and Lil' Bad Wolf are Junior Woodchucks and
often appear with Morty, Ferdie, Heuy, Louie, and Dewey. This cross-over
seems to be an exception that is viable for the list's purposes, but none of
the other characters you mention seem (IMHO) to belong.

Pretty impressive list!
My first thought was to ask who they are, all those people I've never
heard about, but that'll have to wait. First some other comments:
* WHAT'S IN A NAME: Questions about the characters' names.

You list April, May, and June with the surname Duck. Are you sure of
that? They are Daisy's sister's daughters, so if that sister is
married (presumably she is) she (and the nieces) could have another
name. But maybe they've been explicitly named as "Duck" somewhere?
Have they?
As you list Donald's middle initial (F.) you might want to know that
Big Bad Wolf has an M. "Zeke M. Wolf" that is. I know what the M.
stands for, but I'm not sure I can find the story it's mentioned in.
Grandma Duck is another interesting character name-wise. Most of the
time everybody calls her Grandma, even people who possibly can't be
her relatives. But then, once in a while, her real name has been used
by some authors. I think I've only seen it in Swedish translations
though, and it's so infrequent so that the translators generally don't
seem to remember that they've already chosen a name for her, so it's
not very consistent. Has her original real name ever appeared?

Dunno. In Scandinavian Disney comics (by Gutenberghus) in the sixties
Minnie had just one niece. Her name was Tone in Norwegian, Tuttan in
Swedish. But those stories have (hopefully) not been published
outside of Scandinavia. Hmm, time for another heading:
* MISSING DUCKS AND OTHER PEOPLE

Feathry Duck is a character who has appeared lots of times, but almost
never (or never at all?) in the US, even though he was created by
Americans. (I don't know how I know his English name.) He is yet
another cousin of Donald's and appeared first in the sixties in some
stories drawn by Al Hubbard, and then later in a lot of S-coded
stories drawn by Tony Strobl. Some of those stories are really great!
In many of the Hubbard stories Donald has a cat, who's original name
is unknown to me (Swedish name: Kisse). In many of the later stories,
but also in stories without Cousin Feathry, there is a hobo whose name
in Swedish is Skogs-Ola. I guess he hasn't appeared in the US either.
Rockerduck, a throw-away character created by Carl Barks and used by
him once, has been extensively used in Italian Donald Duck comics.
There are also many other characters that are only seen in the Italian
Disney's.
Glittering Goldie, created by Barks for Back to the Klondike (USOS 456),
has appeared in several episodes of DuckTales, and is thus a recurring
character.
Emil Eagle (is that his name?), the evil inventor and arch-enemy of
Gyro.
Mad Madame Mim (originally from the movie The Sword in the Stone)
should be mentioned, as she's been extensively used in the comics.
There's two crooks missing that Mickey Mouse often meets in stories

The Aristokittens from Aristocats even had their own comic book in the
seventies.
Bongo and company should probably be mentioned as he's often met Chip
'n' Dale, and thus seems to live in the same forest. (I've never seen
Fun and Fancy Free (where Bongo debuted), but I've read (in John
Grant) that there are a pair of chipmunks in it that "are
extraordinarily like Chip an' Dale, although they squeak rather than
`speak'".) In the same forest is Bongo's foe Lumpjaw, who's been used
together with C&D many times even when Bongo's not present.
Then there's always those cross-overs where Pinocchio appears in the
forest of the Three Little Pigs, or The Seven Dwarfs get help from
Dumbo to fight the Witch, who gets help from the Beagle Boys. *sigh*
Mighty Crisis on Infinite Earths, Batman!
Maybe the Witch from Snow White should be counted as recurring at
least? She's even been used by Barks once.

My first thought was to ask who they are, all those people I've never
heard about, but that'll have to wait. First some other comments:
* WHAT'S IN A NAME: Questions about the characters' names.

You list April, May, and June with the surname Duck. Are you sure of
that? They are Daisy's sister's daughters, so if that sister is
married (presumably she is) she (and the nieces) could have another
name. But maybe they've been explicitly named as "Duck" somewhere?
Have they?
As you list Donald's middle initial (F.) you might want to know that
Big Bad Wolf has an M. "Zeke M. Wolf" that is. I know what the M.
stands for, but I'm not sure I can find the story it's mentioned in.
Grandma Duck is another interesting character name-wise. Most of the
time everybody calls her Grandma, even people who possibly can't be
her relatives. But then, once in a while, her real name has been used
by some authors. I think I've only seen it in Swedish translations
though, and it's so infrequent so that the translators generally don't
seem to remember that they've already chosen a name for her, so it's
not very consistent. Has her original real name ever appeared?

Dunno. In Scandinavian Disney comics (by Gutenberghus) in the sixties
Minnie had just one niece. Her name was Tone in Norwegian, Tuttan in
Swedish. But those stories have (hopefully) not been published
outside of Scandinavia. Hmm, time for another heading:
* MISSING DUCKS AND OTHER PEOPLE

Feathry Duck is a character who has appeared lots of times, but almost
never (or never at all?) in the US, even though he was created by
Americans. (I don't know how I know his English name.) He is yet
another cousin of Donald's and appeared first in the sixties in some
stories drawn by Al Hubbard, and then later in a lot of S-coded
stories drawn by Tony Strobl. Some of those stories are really great!
In many of the Hubbard stories Donald has a cat, who's original name
is unknown to me (Swedish name: Kisse). In many of the later stories,
but also in stories without Cousin Feathry, there is a hobo whose name
in Swedish is Skogs-Ola. I guess he hasn't appeared in the US either.
Rockerduck, a throw-away character created by Carl Barks and used by
him once, has been extensively used in Italian Donald Duck comics.
There are also many other characters that are only seen in the Italian
Disney's.
Glittering Goldie, created by Barks for Back to the Klondike (USOS 456),
has appeared in several episodes of DuckTales, and is thus a recurring
character.
Emil Eagle (is that his name?), the evil inventor and arch-enemy of
Gyro.
Mad Madame Mim (originally from the movie The Sword in the Stone)
should be mentioned, as she's been extensively used in the comics.
There's two crooks missing that Mickey Mouse often meets in stories

Well... The Toot stuff *is* one of the "continuing themes". So is the
Hiawatha stuff and the Scamp stuff. I'm just not sure what your
criteria are for which of those themes/universes to use. As Darkwing
Duck shares Launchpad McQuack with DuckTales and DuckTales shares lots
of characters with the biggest most mainstream Disney universe (the
Donald-and-Mickey one), I guess it's alright to list the DW cast, but
whatabout Wuz, Hundred Acre Wood, the Gummi's, Cape Suzette, Bonkers!,
Raw Toonage and Bugville? What do those locales have that Scamp's or
Hiawatha's world doesn't?
We've probably read different stories, but I would count Mad Madam Mim
as a full-fledged member of the main Disney universe (Earth-1?). I've
read countless stories where she meets Donald, The Beagle Boys, Chip
'n'Dale, Magica de Spell, etc. etc.
Another thing about reoccurring characters: Now that Don Rosa has made
several stories where the Ducks return to somewhere they've been
before (in some Carl Barks story), a lot of characters that were
one-shot characters have occured two times, but they don't feel like
reoccurring characters to me anyway.
Finally you might think of adding two pets Donald had in the newspaper
strips in the thirties and fourties: Bolivar (a dog) and a donkey
(name?). Bolivar's been used by Barks too.

I've checked now. Their names are Idgit the Midgit and Dangerous Dan
McBoo. Sometimes "Idgit"'s spelt "Idjit" instead.
They are "Putte" & "Kn<"o>len" in Swedish btw. (Currently Sweden is
the second-to-most common country of this list's subscribers.)

The August 14 issue of "Comics Buyer's Guide" has an article
about a survey of Disney Comics readership. This survey was
based on response to a clip-out ballot printed in the November
1991 issues of the comics. Disney received 3000 responses to
this survey. The article says that 69% of the respondents
were male, 73% were under age 17, and 52% were between the ages
of 7 and 12. Disney says they are evaluating the results of
this survey and will use the results to help develop their
future publications.
I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand. it's
essential that younger readers be brought into comics books
stores if comics (or perhaps even literacy???) is to have a
future. On the other hand, Disney may conclude that its
comics line is strictly kiddy fare, and the vacancies created
by the departures of people like Bob Foster will then be filled
by people who have no real interest in the product. Does anyone
with first-hand knowledge of Disney Comics have any insight into
how they intend to develop and market their books in the future?
