I too had always thought of Gyro as a crane, which is why it initially
took me by surprise when the ad from Gladstone Publishing referred to
him as a chicken. I can see that now, thinking about his face and
beak, but because he is tall and skinny I never considered that he was
anything other than a crane. If there were a chicken character in the
Disney universe, I would have thought it would be short and fat, like
the hen Clara Cluck.

In this mail you find a list of Barks oil paintings. I got this list from
the book 'The fine art of Carl Barks' (or so). I have seen the book once,
and the owner gave me a copy of the index.
A lot of painting reproductions are published in Holland since 1987, in
the monthly magazine 'Donald Duck Extra'. That's why the list is of interest
for me, while I don't have the book.
When Barks started to paint Disney-things again for Another Rainbow,
he produced (at least) the paintings I numbered 123-136. I got some
information about these paintings from The Carl Barks Library (in which some
are reproduced, but not all). I don't have the CBL either...
As you can see, some information is missing, mostly about these AR paintings.
So, my question: can anyone give me the information to complete the list?
Maybe there are paintings, that are not on my list?
And: is there a way to tell the difference between the various paintings that
have the same 'inspiration'? (I can't tell which one is the Dutch reprint)

Ah, I wish I had that book! (BTW I think the title is _The Fine Art
of Walt Disney's Donald Duck by Carl Barks_. I will henceforth call
it "the oil painting book".) There were some rumors that a new cheap
edition of it would eventually appear, just like _Uncle Scrooge McDuck
His Life And Times_ got one. Does anyone know if there's some truth
to that rumor, or if there at least still is such a rumor. :-)

So this is not the "plate number" in the oil painting book? I think
it would be easier to identify some of the paintings if you gave those
numbers, as they are sometimes referred to.

You could get miniature versions of the paintings that AR made
lithographs of, just by writing AR and asking for them. I have mine
in a folder somewhere, perhaps together with some other info on the
oils, but I can't find it right now. I don't think I had much there,
but it's irritating all the same. What I did find is "The Well
Wrought Oil" by John Garvin in "The Barks Collector" #39-42, according
to which the oils they made lithographs from are
1. Sailing the Spanish Main
2. An Embarrassment of Riches
3. Till Death Do Us Part
4. A 1934 Belchfire Runabout
5. In Uncle Walt's Collectery
6. Return to Morgan's Island
7. Afoul of the Flying Dutchman
8. Dam Disaster at Money Lake
9. Dubious Ducks at Dismal Downs
10. First National Bank of Cibola
11. Trespassers Will Be Ventilated
12. The Makings of a Fish Story
13. Return to Plain Awful

I don't know. I copied the number from the index in the book, but I can't
remember if the book was giving the paintings other numbers as well.

For those who are wondering about what this thread's about: When Carl
Barks retired from doing comic books in 1966 he started painting in
oil in his newly acquired free time, mostly landscapes. Then some
years later a fan asked him to do a Donald Duck in oil, and Disney,
miraculously enough, okayed it. Some years later (1976) Disney told
Barks that he no more was allowed to do paintings with Disney
characters. Then he continued in this new somewhat cartoony style
with ducks and other waterfowl that weren't Disney characters.
In 1980 the luxury book _Uncle Scrooge McDuck His Life and Times_
appeared from Another Rainbow, with a signed lithograph "Wanderers of
Wonderlands" by Barks with every copy, so Another Rainbow had made
some deal with Disney so that Barks once more was allowed to do
paintings with Disney characters. From 1982 on Another Rainbow has
been releasing lithographs made from Barks paintings.
And now, the answers to some of Harry's questions:

Harry> Yes, it is. I read (in the CBL, I think) that the painting was

Ah, yes. It's in CBL VI, p.550. They didn't think the Japanese would
understand the original title!

They are all reproduced in b/w and very small in the article in The
Barks Collector I referred to. Both of them have "landscape"
orientation.
Earlier this year I got an ad for a new lithograph made from an oil
on a scene from US10a (The Fabulous Philosopher's Stone) btw. The
seller called it something in Swedish which translated back into
English would be "The Magic Stone". "Portrait" orientation.

Two additions to the Don Rosa list:
H 89174 was reprinted in Carl Barks Library, set VI (as part of the
script and pencils is by Barks).
AR 103 was published in KA91-29 in Sweden (and the rest of
Scandinavia, I guess).
I guess new people to the list might be interested in getting things
like the Don Rosa list, so I'm planning on making a standard welcoming
message to the list that tells about interesting information files I
keep as part of the mailing list administration. Something like:
Welcome to <blah blah blah. address of list etc.>
I keep some files here, composed from earlier messages to the list,
that might be of interest to you. Just write to me and ask for any of
them, and I'll send them to you. They are:

The members of the mailing list, with their email addresses.

=======
A list of Don Rosa's Disney stories and covers and where they are
printed. There is information on publication in the USA, the
Netherlands, and Scandinavia.

An explanation of the various story codes, i.e., the production codes
of the stories that are sometimes found in the first panel of the

Is this a good idea? The above is just random thoughts at the moment,
and not a definite list. What should be there? One thing that I
definitely think should be there, but that I haven't got is a list of
the current Disney comics, with short notes on what they contain.
