There was a question a while ago about the place of Duckburg. There was a
discussion about this last year on rec.arts.disney. If I remember well, the
outcome was that it can not be desided where Duckburg is, if you take ALL
the comic stories.
In most of the stories, though, Duckburg is a town in the west of the USA.
Barks placed Duckburg in the state of Calisota, USA.
Some loose remarks:
1. In Scarpa's story "Amundsen's Talisman", Duckburg is very clearly
situated (on a map) on the site of Los Angeles.
2. Before Donald went do Duckburg, he lived in several places:
- Hollywood (see the address of the letter from his sister/cousin
D[umb]ella in a previous thread)
- Burbanks (where the Disney Studios were; Burbanks is mentioned in the
Barks story "Maharajah Donald")
- Quackville (in the march 1944 issue of Walt Disney's Comics & Stories,
in Barks's 7-page "Kite" story, Donald is reading the "Daily Quack"
from "Quackville" on the last page)
3. According to Rich Bellacera, Mickey lives in Mouseton, USA. But in most
of the old comics where Donald and Mickey star together, they live in
the same town. So Mickey must have moved recently.
4. When looking to some Barks stories, one can tell a few things about
Duckburg:

- it is near the desert, and some peaks like "Old Demon's Tooth" are
nearby
- it _always_ snows with Christmas
- it has a (Dutch-type) dike to protect the city from the sea

- Scrooge's money bin is prominently situated on a hill
(Rosa called it "Killmotor Hill". Is this a genuine Barks name?)
on the place of old Fort Duckburgh.
- Scrooge's money bin is on a street corner

5. In some of the (older) european stories, Donald has to fly to go to the

Uncles and such + Uncle Scrooge's age

Once upon a time there was a thread here about why there are so many
uncles and cousins and so few parents in Disney comics. There are
many possible explanations, and some of them were mentioned. I
think the answer is a combination of several things, one of the most
important being that no creator had full control of the stories. More
distant relatives are easier to create on the fly and then discard
later. E.g., when Huey, Dewey, and Louie were introduced in the strip
they were meant to be used for a series of gags for a while.
Introducing sons of Donald would have been harder, and they would
have been harder to get rid of afterwards. (In this case they became
regulars, but noone knew that they would back then.)
When mentioning parenthoods that after all do exist in Disney comics
I think you all missed one of the most important: Big Bad Wolf and
Li'l Bad Wolf.

I have the Golden Fleecing in a Whitman Dynabrite Comic from 1978 (?)
and there Scrooge mentions "this old broadcloth that I bought at a
rummage sale in Scotland in 1924". I guess that year is changed in
the reprint (what was is originally?), and I think there are several
similar changes in other reprints. Apropos Scrooge's age there is a
Barks one-pager from US 12 (the very book that contained the original
printing of Golden Fleecing!) where Scrooge celebrates his
seventy-fifth birthday. The cover date for US 12 was "Dec.-Feb 1956"
so if the story took place in 1955 or 1956 Scrooge is born in 1880 or
1881, but that is perhaps a bit early. Jack L. Chalker gets his year
of birth to be in the range 1860-1865, and Don Rosa's drawing of
Scrooge's grave shows it as 1867.

Actually, as far as the name "Mouseton" goes, it comes from one of the last
multi-part stories in Mickey Mouse Adventures published under the Disney name.
I believe it had something to do with Emil Eagle or Prince Pinguin and had to
do with Mickey saving the hometown of his, Minnie's, Horace's and
Clarabelle's. The townsfolk named or maybe renamed thier town in honor of
Mickey. Due to their conspiquos absence, I don't believe that Donald and
Daisy lived in the same comicbook town as Mickey and Minnie. However, since
Goofy often did come around and assist Mickey, I take it Goofy does, or at
least did, live in Mouseton too. According to Goof Troop's premiere episode
we witnessed Goofy and his son, Max's, move form 'somewhere'(not told) to the
hometown of Pete & Peg (Trudy?) named Spoonerville.
I have another guess for a hometown:
St. Canard (home of Darkwing Duck). From all appearances I would surmise that
it is suppose to be San Fransico. Mostly because of it's coastland/metropolis
appearance and a very distinctive 'bridge.' SOme might suggest it is actually
New York City. I don't know, but I thought I read somewhere that it was S.F.

Here it is, finally: The International Disney Comic Character Names
list 2.0. Version 1.0 (for anyone who may be wondering) is Per
Starback's original list mailed to this list on the 30th of March. It
took a little longer than I had expected. One reason for this is that
I was desperately trying to find a standard format to type latin
letters in 7-bit ASCII. I finally decided on Latin-1, only to find
that it wasn't complete enough for my needs. Oh, well! You'll just
have to stick with it the way it is.
I have kept Per's general format and made some slight modifications to
it. I have also added all those names that have been mailed by others,
as well as a few of my own. My own additions include some Greek and
Arabic names. For these, I have attempted to do my own translitte-
rations. These are question marked and NOT TO BE TRUSTED!! In the end,
I didn't delete any of Per's names. Those would have been too few to
make any difference anyway.
So, I have done my part of this and now I need Your Help! Per informs
me that, considering the country codes of the e-mail addresses, the
following languages should be represented on this mailing list: English,
Swedish, Dutch, German, Danish, Spanish, Italian, Finnish and Portugese.
This, of course, means that we should be able to get at least a fairly
complete and correct list for the most common names in those languages.
What I want you to do is:
1. Straighten out the question marks. Wherever a question mark, there
is something uncertain (spelling, et c). If you know that such a word
is either correct or incorrect, mail me the facts.
2. Correct errors. There are bound to be dozens of them. I haven't been
able to verify all my sources, and my sources (Per, et c) haven't been
able to verify all their sources.
3. Add more translations. For the names already on the list, and any
other names that you think should be added.
A final note: Do not mail the corrections to the address that I'm
sending this from, but to d91fe at ide.ide.hk-r.se. This other address I
use only when I have to send very long messages, since my normal mail
program can't handle text files longer than 10k (such as this one).

list 2.0. Version 1.0 (for anyone who may be wondering) is Per
Starback's original list mailed to this list on the 30th of March. It
took a little longer than I had expected. One reason for this is that
I was desperately trying to find a standard format to type latin
letters in 7-bit ASCII. I finally decided on Latin-1, only to find
that it wasn't complete enough for my needs. Oh, well! You'll just
have to stick with it the way it is.
I have kept Per's general format and made some slight modifications to
it. I have also added all those names that have been mailed by others,
as well as a few of my own. My own additions include some Greek and
Arabic names. For these, I have attempted to do my own translitte-
rations. These are question marked and NOT TO BE TRUSTED!! In the end,
I didn't delete any of Per's names. Those would have been too few to
make any difference anyway.
So, I have done my part of this and now I need Your Help! Per informs
me that, considering the country codes of the e-mail addresses, the
following languages should be represented on this mailing list: English,
Swedish, Dutch, German, Danish, Spanish, Italian, Finnish and Portugese.
This, of course, means that we should be able to get at least a fairly
complete and correct list for the most common names in those languages.
What I want you to do is:
1. Straighten out the question marks. Wherever a question mark, there
is something uncertain (spelling, et c). If you know that such a word
is either correct or incorrect, mail me the facts.
2. Correct errors. There are bound to be dozens of them. I haven't been
able to verify all my sources, and my sources (Per, et c) haven't been
able to verify all their sources.
3. Add more translations. For the names already on the list, and any
other names that you think should be added.
A final note: Do not mail the corrections to the address that I'm
sending this from, but to d91fe at ide.ide.hk-r.se. This other address I
use only when I have to send very long messages, since my normal mail
program can't handle text files longer than 10k (such as this one).

This is the first I've heard of "The Duck Who Fell to Earth" and "The Life
of Scrooge." Can anyone tell more about these? Have they already come out
? If so, where and are they published in the U.S.? Is the purpose of "The
Life of Scrooge" to present a chronological and ancestral look at the Duck
Clan? Will it answer whether Donald & Daisy are related ;-)?
Another side thought which has nothing to do with anything whatsoever:
We already discussed the color scheme of HD&L (Red, Blue & Green) to which
there was indeed some dispute over validity and canonity. Fair enough.
So, have the colors of April, May & June been in any way consistant? It
appeared that thier colors somewhat paralleled HD&L, but at times I have
even seen them on the three remaining colors: Purple, Orange & Yellow,
though I never could tell what order they coresponded. Webby is definitely
Pink. In the case of AM&J I realize that, like HD&L, their colors were only
distinct in their shoes, bows and amulets, since they often wore black
dresses, just as HD&L often wear black shirts with on;y their baseball caps
displaying any color. Daisy herself seems to fluctuate between Pink, Green
and ocassionally Yellow. Poor Donald has only fluctuated between color
schemes of White & Blue, rarely ever taking off his sailor suit to become
a normal citizen...can you imagine if you had a neighbor who hadn't been in
the Navy for years yet still wore his sailor uniform (all the time). Makes
me wonder if that didn't at least play into some of Daisy's indecision between
Don & Gladstone.

I posted the information in Barks's tree earlier before you were on
the list, and I guess Rosa intends to follow it. At least he calls

Yeah, of course that might be a dangerous assumption, but everytime we
get to know when a Barks story occurs it "happens" to occur at about
the time the story originally was published. There are some examples
of that, like when a year is mentioned *and* how many years ago that
was. (Sorry, I don't remember any examples right now. If anyone asks
me to, I'll try to find a few.)

In the Don Rosa index (ftp.lysator.liu.se:/pub/comics/disney/don-rosa)
you will find that The Duck Who Fell to Earth was published in Disney
Comics' DDA #37.
"The Life of Scrooge" is a twelve(?)-part story which Rosa still (?)
is working on for Egmont in Copenhagen. The first five chapters are
published in Scandinavia, but the first two were never published in
Sweden so I haven't read them. It's a story of Scrooge's life from
birth (I think), with lots of allusions to Barks stories. The chapter
titles are "The Last of the Clan McDuck", "The Master of the
Mississippi", "The Buckaroo of the Badlands", "The King of the Copper
Hill" and "The New Laird of Castle McDuck". They will certainly be
published by Gladstone, but don't hold your breath while you're
waiting...
If you really want to know more about them I could tell you, but I
wouldn't want to spoil the stories for you non-Scandinavians. (I
remember hinting at Rosa doing gross continuity errors in chapter 3
though.)

I got only two other reactions, one with an incomplete list like yours,
and one saying that it is too hard to tell Barks' best. Kind of like
asking a father which son is his favourite.
So, the poll is off. Anyone who wants to discuss favourite stories,

Per Starback once corrected me when I stated there was only one story
where Scrooge's first dime appeared, _before_ Magica De Spell entered the
comics. He mentioned two Uncle Scrooge comics, but he forgot the _first_
story where the dime appeared: Uncle Scrooge One Shot 495, the 2nd story:
"wandering money bin". He used it there to cut his ropes (the dime was
very sharp after all those years)...

I got only two other reactions, one with an incomplete list like yours,
and one saying that it is too hard to tell Barks' best. Kind of like
asking a father which son is his favourite.
