I believe it was me that suggested "Hard Haid Moe" as the name
of the hillbilly character. I think another Australian reader
of this group (or maybe someone with Australian comics) who
suggested "hog haid moe". I'll stand by my recall for now, but
my comics are 800 miles away (like everyone elses seem to be..)
and I could be wrong. Certainly the character is very "hard-headed".
There is one story I would really like to see again, in which
Scrooge and Fethry combine with Moe to open up a "country style
restaurant", with comic results. Maybe one day.
While I'm here, there was a letter in one of the recent Gladstones
which mentioned the Barks non-Disney stories, but the Gladstone
response was pretty much "aint Disney, can't do it". Does anyone
know of any reason Gladstone couldn't get the rights and publish
them in a series of three or four albums? I would really like to
get those stories in a better format than the Barks Bear Book.

Sorry for delayed replies; I was in last college test but now I
just have to take my diploma in March and watch many people eating their
hearts out... :-)

The first Brazilian Disney title, _O Pato Donald_, has been
published since 1950, and since then all covers have been made by
Brazilian artists. The first Brazilian stories appeared around 1960
but it took a long time until they were exported (but then Brazil began
importing a lot of Italian stories, too).

Well, now when you mentioned the bank (if it is the one, where $crooge
has either blue or red coat and his black glasses and stick can both be
taken off) which is quite easy to get in Finland, since the Finnish
National bank - Kansallis-Osake-Pankki still gives them to kids for free.
So, us 'lurkers' (grr ;) from Finland would be delighted to send a one
for any of you people out there (of course, on your bill).
Now, when we're on the issue, all kind of Disney merchandising is
very popular in Finland and there's a Finnish guy, Pentti Hauhiala or
something like that, who has many thousands of them and most of them were
bought in Finland. I've seen pictures of his house and there's nothing in
there which does NOT have Disney in it :)

Your "Treasury of Croesus" was also printed in the Finnish Donald Duck
issue 1/1995, which was also the 2000th issue of the magazine and contained
about twenty extra pages where "Horsing around with history" was in.

Moe is *not* as smashingly popular in Brazil as some messages
may mean. I was noticed his title has been recently cancelled by Abril,
possibly favoring a new, less expensive (Moe's book was quite
inexpensive anyway!), non-character-oriented title. Even though, I
believe Moe's title has lived a little longer than Goofy's or Fethry's
(in fact, Brazil's recent big hits, as '86 Daisy, are rare; traditional
titles as Donald, Mickey and $crooge remain the top sellers). Comic
books come and go; that's business...
I can't remember outstanding Brazil-made stories with Moe, as
most of them deal with obvious urbanite-hillbilly clashes (Moe visits
Duckburg, Fethry visits Moe, etc.) and some poorly inserted local
folklore elements that may be hard to understand in other countries.
Maybe Italy is reprinting some of them.

neglible sales and huge losses.
Another reason they can't do all that is that Harvey Comics
already HAS the rights to print the MGM comics, and has been using
Barks' Bear stories in the backs of their TOM & JERRY comics. TOM &
JERRY is currently back in sight in a new TV series, so they can sell
the title to kiddies and stick some of those Barks stories in the back
for the miniscule number of readers who care or know who Barks is.

Of the parts of the Marvel company, the toys and TV shows are earning plenty of
money, but as I said, comics are losing the buyer base they gained when the card
speculators jumped into the hobby about 5 years or so ago. Super-hero comic
sales are dropping. Marvel is downsizing to readjust to the market, and I would
be surprized if they didn't lop off the Disney titles (if Disney would allow
this) since those are not taken seriously by American comic buyers. But I dunno
-- they might sell pretty well being caught up in the American passion to let
Disney control them like sheep and buy LION KING this and ALLADIN that, ad
infinitum. Of course, the comics still require reading, which the t-shirts and
lunch boxes don't, so I don't know what they'll do.
As to Gladstone, their sales are still fine, not being subject to any
effects of the loss of the card speculators and other American "collectibles
louts" that WIZARD magazine and its ilk have brought into the hobby. And they
defineitely WILL be publishing the "Lo$" as a collected album with lots of

Barks to Europe -- again!

Last year Carl Barks made a European trip, and at least I saw that as
a unique, once-in-a-lifetime event, but now word is that he'll be back
to Europe in May this year. I have no details about this yet, though.
