It's been ages since I've checked in on the list. Hope you're
all well!
I've been enjoying all the new Gemstone issues, of course.
Nothing but good things to say about them. :)
As I was skimming through the last few months' worth of digests
that were languishing unread in my e-mail folders, I saw some of
the great pictures from the Disney comics display in Paris.
Wow, I wish I could have seen all that in person! It would be
so fun to dive into a pile of (soft!) money bags! :D Heck, for
an American like me it would just be great to be in a room with
that many Disney comic fans!
Among the great photos some of you linked to, I spotted a Zio
Paperone issue in a display case amid a bunch of other comics.
I cropped and enlarged it, but it's still really small and
grainy. I don't suppose some nice person could scan a better
quality image for me? I'd really appreciate it!

stories? Extra material, etc.? It's too bad the side stories aren't included. But
since it looks like Don will write Life and Times stories off and on for the rest
of his career, I guess it's hard to really have a 'definitive' edition.
Whenever that edition comes out (hopefully many, many years from now), it'll be a
monster of a book!

for this list, is there anyone who is buying all the new Australian
issues? I can't justify buying them all when I have the USA equivalents as
well. If there's someone in Australia who is buying them all, can you
please contact me off list; I'd like to just confirm that the Australian
issue HAVE in fact continued to be identical to the USA versions (they seem
to at a glance at them on the newsstands).

Don Rosa's story "The Crown of the Crusader Kings" starts
with a scene in $crooge's Trophy Room. At the bottom of
the first page Donald dusts off a golden statuette of a
falcon, encrusted with jewels. Several readers may have
been wondering from which Barks-story this falcon might
be. Several other readers may have recognized this falcon
as the Maltese Falcon from the 1941 movie of the same
title.
I saw this movie just yesterday and I realized that the
Falcon's presence in the Trophy Room is not just a random
funny reference, but something slightly more meaningful.
"The Maltese Falcon" starts with a text screen which
explains the Falcon's history:
"In 1539, the Knight Templars [sic] of Malta paid tribute
to Charles V of Spain, by sending him a Golden Falcon
encrusted from beak to claw with rarest jewels -- --- but
pirates seized the galley carrying this priceless token
and the fate of the Maltese Falcon remains a mystery to
this day ---"
The similarities between the Falcon and the Crown are
obvious: both are treasures of the Knights Templar, both
are made of gold and encrusted with rarest jewels, both
are sent away on a ship as a tribute to please a foreign
monarch. It looks like Don has taken this text from "The
Maltese Falcon" as a starting point for his story about
the Crusader Kings. The Falcon's presence is not just a
reference, but homage where homage is due.
And further: There is a striking similarity between
Cleopatra's tomb in Rosa's "The Guardians of the Lost
Libary" and "The Lost Charts of Columbus" and Cleopatra's
courtroom in "Ast?rix chez Cl?opatre", page 2. (Not only
the huge falcon, but also some of the paintings on the
wall.)

Oh my yes yes yes yes yes and yes some more!!! I've been
wandering around humming "After the Ball" ever since I heard it
was coming up. I suspect it may even knock "Hearts of the
Yukon" out of the #1 favorite spot on my list! :) I simply
can't WAIT to see what you've done with it! Since we poor
Americans will probably have to wait awhile to see it, I've
attempted to tide myself over with a stack of books from the
library on the Klondike gold rush.
(LOL, I started to type "Klondike goldfish." I've been spending
too much time looking at my fish tanks, I guess!) ;)

Battle Beasties.
And I *think* there was a third story that referred to the Beasties,
although we didn't actually see the creatures in that one. I think.
