Quote from user: Lars JensenI'm sorry to once again be such a downer, but... David Gerstein wrote that these projects are what the people at Gemstone

Quote from user: ramapithpresently *want* to do.
Everyone, there's a huge difference between *wanting* to do something and actually *doing* it. We all know that Gemstone *wanted* to do some black & white Shonen Jump-style books last year... and those didn't end up happening, did they? Or take the Scandinavian Carl Barks Collection: it was on Egmont's drawing board for almost *ten years* before it came out.

I've visited Amazon's website many times over the years, and I know that publishing dates, prices and contents information on upcoming publications often change before the publications are out. Why not postpone jumping up and down with joy until we at the very least have an official press release from Gemstone stating that they will indeed publish these projects at some specific date?

Well, Lars, perhaps I am just being naively optimistic, but then again I am never really thought of as a "glass is half full" kind of person... :)

Two reason why I think there is a good chance that these projects will see the light of day in the near future:

One, while David said that they *want* to do these books, I guess the better word might be *plan*. I don't think they would have sent the info to amazon if this was just some pie in the sky wish for something they might do way down the road.

Two, while items on amazon may be listed and then never appear, I have found that is seldom the case with Gemstone. Right now the only items that I can think of that were listed and never appeared were a few issues of Mickey Mouse Adventures and Donald Duck Adventures, but then again these titles were cancelled as periodicals.

Finally, thanks for the support for a 3rd monthly title, Mykal. Wouldn't it be great if there could be one by the end of 2008 or the beginnning of 2009!

Dean, I'm afraid I need to split the difference between yourself and Lars. While I like to share your optimism, Lars is himself right that things are pretty durn tentative. Our distribution arm asks us to submit our information for Amazon??and other online retailers??nearly a year in advance. So these early plans are often subject to change.

As for the third monthly title: fans on this forum and in other online forums have expressed quite an interest in this; but the way to have the biggest impact with all involved parties at Gemstone is to send suggestions and requests not just to the DCF, but directly to our lettercol e-mail addresses, where more of our staff will see them.
At present, the lettercols have received fewer letters in favor of a third title and more letters in favor of irregular specials and one-shots, so that's what we've been planning. From the buzz I find online, I myself suspect more people would like to see the third title??but this isn't reflected in the letters that our lettercols are actually receiving. If you feel differently, squawk back!

It's as easy as... (Email removed) (Email removed)

Some have suggested a monthly Mickey/Donald combination title. Others like the idea of a bimonthly Mickey book and a bimonthly Donald, switching off month by month. Were we to expand our line (not that it's likely to happen right away, what with all these specials we're doing!), what would you like to see?

With all the necessary caution, it's still great to know that there are serious plans for such Libraries, and that, though nothing has been yet set in stone, there was confidence and reason enough to give amazon such information-- which surely could not be possible without the approval of those concerned at the might Walt Disney Company; those same people may still scratch the project, next week or one week before printing starts, but it's still good to know things are evolving in this direction, and I understand how difficult your position is, David.

As for the price, Europeans obviously have a serious advantage (though the shipping can be expensive), but even in the U.S.A., $150 is most reasonable for such quality.
I absolutely do not regret getting the deluxe Mickey and the Gang, nor regularly upgrading my E.C. Library to the new E.C. Archives: the paper quality is very high, the coloring is splendid, and every page is gorgeous. I bet the Disney archive series (Gottfredson, Rosa, Barks), will be done the same.

E.C.'s archive books (Superman, Batman, The Spirit, ...) are $50 each (less on amazon, but so will the Gemstone books be; I'm comparing the suggested retail prices), and though beautiful, they absolutely cannot compete with Gemsteon's E.C. Library: each volume of the latter is about 10 pages and stories shorter than DC's, but it's also larger and much better printed-- DC's books are not shabby at all, far from it, but Gemstone's are a deluxe version.

$150 for what will surely be a 3-volume set, like the first CBL, makes it the same; it's more at once, but over a longer period, and I am also sure the plans are for more than a reprint, with new essays, pictures, ...

My best wishes to Gemstone's team!

On the other hand Amazon was in denial for years about Gemstone's Uncle Scrooge #319. They kept claiming that the comic would be available within a couple of weeks, then a month or so. Then it was two months, then three, and four... and so on. Meanwhile I had contacted Gemstone and they claimed that that issue was sold out and not slated to be reprinted. Meanwhile Amazon kept informing the public via their website that they expect to ship at a later date. Finally Amazon had to concede the reality that this issue was no longer going to be available. But it took them a number of YEARS. I don't know who was responsible for the mis-information, Amazon or Gemstone. But the bottom line: I would not take to heart Amazon's word for such things.

Availability is rather fickle on amazon, I've noticed that too-- and it's even worse in France, where the comics are never available before at least a month.
I had to get one or two issues from Midtown Comics because amazon never carried them, months and months after their release; I also got one MM&F from them, which Mile-High Comics never could get either somehow.

I have, as of today, pre-ordered this amazing collection!

If we get Carl Barks Collected Works without the childhood diseases, hysteric colouring and amatourish translations, this is the best that has happened to mankind since the invention of the bottle-opener...

...look forward to receive my copy by Nov-Dec 2008

(But then again - one must be patient - it's been seen before, that this can be a long, slow and narrow path!)

Regarding the ten Danish volumes of Carl Barks Samlede Værker - we are about to get to the finishing line AND by now the "childhood deseases" are gone - GONE AT LAST!
Now Egmont has send out requests about possible interests in continuing the series with three further volumes with Barks non-Disney series, his CEO's and other things, concerning his artistic life - which I, for one, finds most interesting...

Keep on trucking!!

Quote from user: Robb_KI will buy The Barks Collection and Gottfredson Library.
I do hope that many people will buy the Rosa Library too ?? that series will be a dream come true for many Duck-fans.

I will not by the other two because I already have the old CBL + the present Norwegian CBSV. Neither will I by the US Gottfredson Library, because of the censorship and I also find the slang a bit difficult to understand. But I hope there someday will be published a Norwegian uncensored FGSV instead.

By the way, I also hope that there will be a Paul Murry Mouse Library sometime in the future, limited to the majority of his stories that take place in the Mouse-universe.

The world needs a Taliaferro Collection.

Sigvald: What makes you think that if Gemstone does the groundwork in assembling a Gottfredson Library, that Egmont won't take advantage of that, and print their own versions in Scandanavia and Germany a few years later?

There must be a misunderstanding here? What you are saying is exactly what I am thinking. I do believe that Egmont will publish a Gottfredson Collection/Library as long as Gemstone does so. Furthermore I believe that Egmont's version will be uncensored (at least more than Gemstones version) - just compare CBSV with CBL and you'll understand what I mean.

It was your use of the word "someday"-as if to mean some time in the distant future in a project completely unrelated to Gemstone's. I guess that you were thinking exactly what I was thinking, that the Egmont versions will start only 3-4 years after Gemstone's, to give the initiators of the project a chance to sell out, before eating into their market. You certainly would be willing to wait 3-4 years to get a better and more readable (for a Norsker) version.

There are many Western Europeans who would buy the Gemstone version, regardless of a version coming out in their own language, as they'd want it in the original printed form and writers' own language. But, there probably are a lot more, who would rather just have it in their own language. That is one major reason why Egmont's would have to wait a few years.

David,
Has Gemstone determined how often new volumes will be published?
Thanks,
LL

Is Gemstone going to use Egmont's material? Printing plates and coloring etc...
Timo

Now the Barks Col. has dropped from $ 150 to $ 99, so suddently I could spare another 50 $ on other books (and postage and customs)

Timo

I sure hope they recolour the first tree volumes, wich were a disgrace in Denmark - with an orgie of colors and gradients!
More subtle colours (like them old four-colours) and no PhotoShopping around here, please....

That is a good idea Oliver. In fact they should have collections of stories by every Disney Comics Artist.
