Topic: Donald Duck Family by Jippes - June 2008

In my now 30 years old article and family-tree I suggested this:

?In German Micky Maus 1965-5 ( http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=S+63089 ) it is mentioned that Grandma Ducks maternal aunt married a certain Hofrat von Drake from Vienna, and one of their children is Ludwig von Drake, who therefore is Elviras cousin. In Danish AA 1962-33 it is told, that Ludwig is Donalds uncle on his mothers side, and because Elvira is Scrooges cousin as mentioned in Vacation Parade 4, Ludwig might be Scrooges cousin too.
In ?Die Ducks ? Psykogramm einer Sippe? Grobian Gans pointed out, that Ludwig is Daisys uncle, because she is the only one who calls him that (in German); even Donald mostly calls him ?Professor?. While Daisys surname is Duck, Daisys mother must be Ludwigs sister because of the changed surname.??

Of course this is a far cry from any Barksian (or Rosa-) canon, but it might show how complicated this genealogy can be.

My tree and link to my article can be found on Gilles' page.

I wrote an article about Ludwig's place on the Family Tree, which I sent to dcml. However, this was before I read Asger's post on Ludwig's father. The article includes (re)discovered information regarding Ludwig's grandmother.

Asger's tree is indeed to be found on Gilles' page, but I can't find a link to the article.

The tree I constructed didn't show up properly in my post to dcml, but maybe I wil succeed here:

Goose(m)x(f)"Mother Goose" Von.Drake(m)x(f)Duck Duck(m)x(f) ...

Goose(f)x(m)Von.Drake "Grandma Duck"(f)x(m)"Grandpa Duck"
/ /
Ludwig von Drake(m) Hortense McDuck(f)x(m)Quackmore Duck
/
Donald Duck(m)

Hey Michiel, nice work. I think this summarises everything ever written about Ludwigs family. While I made him Grandmas cousin, It's more plausible that he's a son of her cousin, still making him a distant 'uncle' of Donald.

I'll send a link to Gilles, driving him crazy trying to fit this into his tree.

In my opinion:
-Ludwig Von Drake's parents are Hofrat Von Drake and a Grandma Duck's aunt named Coot, both from German Micky Maus 35/1962.
-Ludwig Von Drake's paternal grandparents are Friedrich Von Drake (from B 810094b, with the name Frederico Von Pato) and a girl named Duck, who is the sister of Donald's Great-Grandfather (from W LVD 3-03).
-Ludwig Von Drake's maternal grandparents are Cornelius Coot and Mother Goose (from "The trouth about Mother Goose").

My ideas:

-Cornelius Coot met Mother Goose before his trip in U.S.A. and they had Ludwig's mother.
-Deadeye Dick from W LVD 3-03, was originally thought as Deadeye Duck, but a misprint made his surname Dick.

Wait a minute if Ludwig's mother is a daughter of Cornelius Coot then that would make Cornelius Ludwig's Grandfather and he and Grandma Duck would be cousins which would make him and Donald third cousins. I always thought that Ludwig was in Scrooge's generation. This contradicts Don Rosa's Theory of Ludwig being married to Matilda McDuck.

Ludwig must have been born between 1880 and 1900 or so. His mother would have been born between 1850 and 1875 or so. Isn't that too late to have been a daughter of Cornelius Coot? - (unless it's a daughter from a second marriage, late in Coot's life.) Wasn't Cornelius Coot born in the 1700s? The "Official" date of his birth is listed as 1790, his death as 1880. He would have been 60 years old in 1850, and 85 (and 5 years from his death in 1875). Cornelius was already in The New World at least a couple years before 1818, and an unmarried explorer at the time. So, it would be awkward for him to have married an Austrian woman (who would stay in Austria) before going to North America.
If we MUST make Ludwig a direct descendant of Cornelius Coot, I'd rather assume that Ludwig's mother was a granddaughter of Cornelius Coot, who the latter met in North America, but who divorced him and then returned to her parent's family in Austria, along with her children. It all seems rather far fetched.
It seems more realistic that the connection of The Austrian Von Drakes and the Dutch/English Coots were connected previous to Cornelius' time (between 1500 and 1600, when The Netherlands (Belgium included) were governed (owned) by the Austrian Hapsburgs (along with Austria); or, possibly, also after The Northern Provinces (United Netherlands (Netherlands of today)) became independent (roughly around 1600), when The Hapsburgs of Spain and Austria ruled over both Austria and The Southern Provinces (today's Belgium) until 1792, when they were conquered by France. Maybe the family fled to England during The Napoleonic Wars?
Cornelius, himself, might then have been a descendant of both the Von Drakes and The Coots.

Admitted that Cornelius Coot is Ludwig's great-grandfather, who was Ludwig's materal grandfather?

That is a good question. I think Cornelius might have had another son besides Clinton because if if it was him then Ludwig's grandfather would have to be Grandma Duck's brother and that would put Ludwig in the same generation as Donald and we know that he is not in that generation.

Quote from user: Robb_KThat story is 99% Geoff Blum's, and should NOT be considered a Barks story. Daan Jippes has drawn it. It will be in a volume of Jippes' drawing of Barks stories, but should NOT be considered a Barks story.
I don't think the "Goldes Apples" would have really lost anything in a collection of Jippes' finishings of Barks stories. As you say it, it is a Blum/Jippes story based in a very, very genereal and vague way on the idea of a Barks story (but, on the other side, also going beyond its inspiration consciously, so through the use of Magica De Spell who Barks introduced about ten years after his lost "Golden Apples"). It is, maybe, already a bit problematic that "Hang Gliders Be Hanged!" was presented in its finished Vicar version in the Carl Barks Collection, since Barks only provided the plot as text (rightly presented in the CBC), but did not take any influence at all on its further development and finishing through Tom Anderson and Vicar--that also in difference to "Horsing Around History" that Barks developed together with Van Horn until finishing. (I must admit, however, that I'm not unhappy that Vicar's interpretation was presented in the CBC, since I think his style to be relatively Barks-near.)

Blum's and Jippes' "Golden Apples" have their place in a Jippes collection though, of course.

Wait a minute? We were owned by Austria? I thought it was the other way around.
