Don't forget Soccermania ... those were fairly Barksian Beagles. There was some foreshadowing of DuckTales' eventual distinct Beagle Boys, but close enough to Barks' clones that I can accept them as true to the comics.

I didn't mean that there were Beagles in Mickey's Christmas Carol; I meant that in terms of what I think the spirit of a comics adaptation should be, MDG: 3 Musketeers and Mickey's Christmas Carol come closest. (And Soccermania, I suppose.) Far closer than DuckTales, IMO.

No 3D, as far as I know. I was thinking about hypothetical comics adaptations: I just don't think you could render the Ducks properly in 3D without resorting to a radically different art style (look at Mickey Mouse Clubhouse), and I wouldn't want to see that.

I watched that film a million times growing up. Extremely entertaining and very funny.
It's great, isn't it? Reallly creative with the music, it's fun, adventurous. It manages to walk the line between being cartoony and being able to develop its characters. There's a sense of peril and drama when Mickey nearly drowns and Donald chickens out, but it never becomes morbid or anything. There's even a rendition of The Pirates of Penzance, that gets bonus points from me.

I really wonder why they haven't done more movies like this.

A few decades ago, G. Now, considering that they slap it on there for things like "mild rude humor" and "mild peril", and movies like Frozen end up PG, it would quite easily garner a PG rating.

This is quite possible, PG is really a much wider selling rating at this point, it seems. Still, there's been some objective change on the MPAA's part. To stick with cartoons, Sleeping Beauty has peril and actual violence, with blood when Maleficent is killed IIRC, but it earned a G rating that Frozen, Tangled, and Big Hero 6 couldn't achieve.

Of course, this still has exceptions. I was surprised that Ratatouille for example wasn't PG, but I suppose it doesn't actually have any directly objectionable content, it just seems generally more mature.
