Egmont bought, but it was shelved, due to Ludwig's ban. Gyro is a genius in only one area: the area of wacky ideas in inventing. And, he is modest about his talents. Ludwig, on the other hand, is a genius at EVERYTHING, and is egotistical. They are very different characters, and NOT interchangeable! I can see uses for both in different types of stories.

Amen to that. :) I've got the old Ludwig von Drake comics by Tony Strobl---though most of them look like the Dead Sea Scrolls (I manhandle everything I've got :) ). The one in best shape is LVD #4, and it's got a story with both Ludwig and Gyro in it: "The I.Q. Bugaboo", where Von Drake and Gearloose are competing to see who can come up with the best invention. It's quite entertaining to see the two working together (even if they're working AGAINST each other). This was NOT a great judgment call on Egmont's part. :P

In fact, there was a Tony Strobl Donald Duck story in the early 1960s (1961? or 1962?) That featured both of them in prominent roles. I cant remember the title, but it was released in American Donald Duck (I believe it was one of the late 70s or early 80s in that series).

You did a lovely job on that drawing! :) Pity about that story, I'd have loved to see it. And yes, they're very different characters, and they should have both been in those stories. Sounds like the publishers use the same kind of reasoning as the Powers That Be that decide what people want to
watch on the Disney Channel. (The same wisdom that led to the demise of the "Vault Disney" late-night
slot. :P )

It's nice to see so many Ludwig fans as a high percentage of people frequenting this website. That indicates to me that the policy of not using him is wrongly-conceived.

Thank you Olivier, and excellent idea. :) I was worried for some time that I was being OT, and this really deserved its own thread. ;)

Amen to that!!! :) He's really a much more popular character than he's credited for. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse has him on a lot of its episodes, and Von Drake merchandise sells pretty quickly over at eBay. :) And in 2011, Ludwig officially turns 50 !!! :)
(Unfortunately, so do I. :) )

I forgot to add my own cent: there is room for both Ludwig and Gyro; one might also consider characters beyond the fowl towns and add that Gilbert, too, is a different kind of genius.

A belated bit of news:
September 24th marked the 47th anniversary of Ludwig von Drake!! :) His first appearance was on September 24th, 1961 on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color; I think he appeared in the comics about that same time. :)
2011 will be his FIFTIETH anniversary!! :) Let's hope by then they had the good sense to put his shows on dvd---he made several of them ( not including the older films that he narrated on WDWWC , like "Mickey and the Beanstalk" , though I wouldn't mind if they included those! ;) ). I haven't seen them all in years, unfortunately; but I do have the following videos: Kids Is Kids, Music For Everybody / Fly With Von Drake, and Ducking Disaster with Donald Duck / Goofing Around With Donald Duck (formerly Man Is His Own Worst Enemy / Square Pegs In Round Holes). I do have a Disney Learning Adventures dvd with Ludwig narrating "Mickey and the Beanstalk". :)
(Now if only they could reprint some of his old comics, eh? Even the foreign ones. The nice guy who runs the Beru Disney Comics page sent me some scans. :) )

People used to say that Ludwig was a character without a use, as Gyro could be used in every situation he is used. But that wasn't true. An egotistical, know-it-all professor is quite different from a shy, unassuming inventor. I'm glad he's being used again, because I already have a few one-pagers using him, and plan to use him in some stories.

I wanted to post this earlier, but I simply forgot: Thank you, Mr. Lars Jensen, for such an excellent revival of Ludwig von Drake in Egmont-produced Comics. I am really happy to see him back again in German "Micky Maus" after such a long time. The storie's German name is "Schnitzeljagd" and its Story Code is D 2008-041. It appears in Micky Maus 42/2008 with art by Maximino. I can't find it in INDUCKS yet. Hopefully it will appear in Comics and Stories soon, so that Ludwig's quite big fan club will be contented as well. It's really fun to read.

Let Me Get This Straight Egmont allows artists to use Ludwig in their stories? It's too bad they couldn't have done that while Don Rosa was still writing stories.

You're welcome, Zacharias, and thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the story. And I thought Maximino did an excellent job of drawing Ludwig.
For now, this will be the only story with Ludwig Von Drake. Egmont is waiting to see how readers and publishers respond. So if you or anyone else out there want Egmont to use Ludwig in future stories: Write your publisher, and let them know!

Roger, they didn't decide to bring Ludwig back until January this year. And note that it's only one story. For now, anyway.

Hey Lars; I never read that. Do you know if that story has been published around here? It's not indexed yet. (or at least it's not in the story file)

It's tentatively scheduled for a Gemstone issue next spring. Plans might change, though, so don't hold me to it (yet).
