According to sources from Chile, Víctor Arriagada Ríos aka Vicar died yesterday after battling leukemia for a longer time. He was 77 years old.

Oh. What a sad news.
I love his work, especially the stories drawn in the 70s and 80s. His art reminds me most of my childhood, e.g. the story Green Fingers - published in my first comic book.

I'm sad to hear of his death. He was and will always be one of my faves. I especially like his Duck comics from the 1970s and 80s, when he was probably more involved and there was more of a Vicar touch to his work.

Vicar was indeed a great artist - I really admire his artwork and some of my favorite comics was drawn by him. In Sweden, most of the time, at least one of his comics was in our weekly comic book, so he is one of the comic book artists I have read the most.

Sad indeed. I wouldn't say I *loved* Vicar's work, but he was reliable, and I always felt like he was this constant, grounding presence. Certainly, it's hard to imagine what Disney comics (in the US, at least) would've even looked like over the past twenty-five years if not for him.

Not really. There simply would have been a larger mix of stories from other European artists, such as Jan Gulbransson, Ben Verhagen, Freddy Milton, Marc DeJonge, Daniel Branca, Mau and Bas Heijmans, Michel Nadorp, Romano Scarpa, etc.

I understand what you mean. Back in the Gladstone I/Disney Comics era, it seemed to be either Vicar or Branca, and I enjoyed Branca much, much more. Gladstone I seemed partial to Branca, but Disney Comics seemed to use Vicar a lot more. Vicar's artwork always struck me as "safe" (dare I say it, even a little dull), but it was infinitely better than many other artists; familiar and solid.

Sad to hear of Vicar's passing. Gladstone, Disney and Gemstone really did make a lot of use of his work, it seems. The stories he illustrated were seldom fantastic ones, but his solid artwork really helped sell some weaker work. If I recall, he did get to illustrate Carl Barks' script for "Go Slowly, Sands of Time". He was one of the few artists who seemed to have Barks' style down almost perfectly (maybe a little TOO perfectly).

I just hope Fantagraphics picks-up the License for Vicar Comics and have a "Greatest Stories" for him. :(

Vicar, you will be missed. On another note, I got that last story in another comic book recently (Donald Duck Extra 01-2012) and I noticed how "shakey" it's been drawn. I thought something was wrong with the printing (especially because it has a 2008 code, and I thought he'd done more recent stories). I can't say Vicar's art was one of my favorites however, but he does indeed have something reliable. I already miss him, and realize that Branca's gone too (he's been gone longer already, but new stories by hum continue to be printed in Holland and he's so darn good). Also: did you guys know Vicar worked for Disney comics for 40 years? That's quite a feat. It's sad to hear he's dead.

Is it possible that he was, in fact, the most prolific Disney artist ever? I don't think inducks provides creator rankings, but it lists him as having drawn a mind-boggling one thousand two hundred ninety-four stories. Certainly, it's possible that there's someone out there who's surpassed that, but none of the other likely candidates whom I can think of even come close.
