And you say it didn't snow in LA when you were there. I've only
been there ONE time in 1989 when Disney TV flew me out for conferences
on the creation of that TALE SPIN series I was briefly involved in
before I found that Egmont had sue of me. But when I was there it SNOWED
HEAVILLY. Several inches on the ground! First time since 1947 that there
was snow in Hollywood, and I saw it. Actually, not much fell at the
hotel I was staying in town, but when the Disney producer pulled up out
front to pick me up, his car was covered with several inches of snow
from just a few miles away -- and I thought the hotel staff was going to
collectively pass out. I mean, imagine, the first snowfall in over 40
years.
Anyway, before I leave, what parting thoughts might I have. I
can say that I did the cover for Gladstone's issue of U$ with part 1 of
my "Life and Times of $crooge McDuck" and yesterday I went over the
coloring of that story with the colorist. And the last thing I did today
was send off the new cover for the same chapter of the series which will
be appearing in a new German album publication which will probably be
titles "THE DON ROSA LIBRARY" unless saner heads prevail. This will be a
companion to their CARL BARKS LIBRARY, and why not, since they won't
hafta pay me any royalties either!
And with that bit of bragging, I now disappear for one week.

Do you mean that you sent Ehapa (the German publisher) a copy
of the cover that you drew for Gladstone? Or do you mean that there
are *two* different covers that you have drawn for "The Last of the
Clan McDuck," one being for Gladstone, another for Ehapa?
If the latter situation is true, I hope that when the LO$ goes
into its eventual second printing (the album version) in this country,
each chapter gets preceded by a double-sided page that has first the
American cover, then on the reverse side the German one, for each
chapter!
As of last summer I knew of no German publication called the
CARL BARKS LIBRARY per se. They have been doing a series for years
and years called DIE BESTE GESCHICHTE VON DONALD DUCK; albums with
rather garish color like the earliest Gladstone albums, which consist
wholly of Barks stories *but* in no particular order. There is a
subtitle on the cover of each edition: IDEE UND ZEICHNUNG VON CARL
BARKS (Concept and Art by Carl Barks), but I believe they've dropped
the credit on the more recent volumes. Barks and Gottfredson remain
the only artists to get credits in Germany, and then only some of the
time.
There is also a German series called DIE TOLLSTE GESCHICHTE
VON DONALD DUCK; these are 68-page bimonthly comics, which have a
mixture of Barks stories, Strobl stories, and Taliaferro daily strips.
I don't believe that any Rosa stories have been published there.
My guess is that the new all-Rosa series is to be called DIE
BESTE GESCHICHTE VON DONALD DUCK with a subtitle, IDEE UND ZEICHNUNG
VON DON ROSA, not some transliteration of THE CARL BARKS LIBRARY.
Maybe I'm wrong... but in 1990, the only hardback "library"
books I saw were the Abbeville/Mondadori books and a Gottfredson
reprint series, MICKYS KLASSIKER. Since then has someone begun
publishing translations of the CBL... I don't mean just some
collection of all-Barks stories, but in Another Rainbow's format? If
so, why aren't ads for the thing in Ehapa's regular comics? (They
weren't as of last summer.)

Gladstone updates wanted and available

Dear Folks,
First of all, I have a request: Does anyone have the new
edition of either Diamond Previews or Advance Comics comic-preview
magazines? If so, could someone type in the summaries of January's
Gladstone offerings? I dialogued the story for DDA 25 and wonder how
it's been described; I know there's a new (to the U. S. that is) Daan
Jippes story in WDC&S 590, and US 285 should have Don Rosa's Lo$ part
1!!! So there's apparently a lot of great stuff coming up and I want
to hear how it's described... can someone help? I have no way to get
either of those catalogs here.
Now a comment as to availability: I have all the new
Gladstone monthlies through DD 282 (with one exception, US 283, which
I'll own very soon), and will be glad to type in information about
them for the gladstone-index file on ftp. But before I send that info
to Per, I need to know: Has someone else done this? Also... don't we
want to combine gladstone-index and disney-index now? Having a gap in
gladstone-index's US listing between 242 and 281 seems awfully odd...
same with WDC&S. Maybe we at least want to install copies of the
information on Disney Comics' US and WDC&S in gladstone-index, so that
readers won't find a whole lot of information missing. Can't we just
have gladstone-disney-index? Or is this sacreligious?
Disney certainly did some very good WDC&S issues... that's one
thing to hand them at least. I wish Gladstone had been influenced by
it, but they seem not to be. For Disney it was the flagship title...
for Gladstone, just another one of the line-up.
BTW: Per, do you still have all the updates I did for
wdc.index? Did Kjell Crone say they couldn't be added? That'd be a
shame since I spent quite a while leafing through those early issues
to get the information. But then... I guess that Becattini's volume
will give us all the updates we ever need on that title when it's
published.
When it *is* published (Vol. 2 I mean) maybe we can put
together a computerized "Disney comics information finder" program
from it... with complete data about everything!
AND NOW:
I have a complete index of all the Dutch stories published in
the U. S., as well as a nearly-complete index to the Danish (Egmont)
stories used here. Do you guys want that stuff for ftp? Someone once
suggested that an index to ALL Danish stories be made and while I
don't have the resources to do that, I can at least go ahead and send
info on the ones that have been published here.
I could eventually also do such an index for Disney Studio
stories (the "Studio program" from 196? to 1990 I mean). But are
these really good enough to bother about? *I* sure have very few
favorites among the lot, although even I will admit that their Goofy
material is pretty good. I just don't think that it's good enough to
take preeminence over Romano Scarpa and others in D&M.

There is talk in the Comics-L newsletter about starting comic book
indexes. I would like to recommend that the Disney comics indexes be used
as examples. Unfortunately, all I remember is that the address is
"lysator something". Could somebody please tell me the ftp address? Is
there a gopher, also?
