Dear Folks,
Here's Don Rosa: "I haven't seen that new UNCLE $CROOGE ADV. yet,
but just from your brief description of the plot, I can tell that story is
a very
direct swipe of "The Most Dangerous Game", an old story filmed MANY times,
most noteably in 1932 simultaneously with KING KONG by the same director,
stars and with the same sets. Maybe it's considered fair game for swiping
as the story is notorious as being swiped by filmmakers for over a
half-century."
Actually, this particular story (titled "Danger Island," I don't
have the code handy) makes constant reference to the story that inspired
it. As Scrooge says, "the old story about the man who hunted MEN -- ha!
You can't be SERIOUS!" If this tale originally contained no references to
its inspiration, I'll -- I'll be doggoned, that's what.

For those curious about that new Disney section over on
COMPUSERVE we were discussing, it's fading fast. In the past 24 hours
there were 3 messages; one from me to a non-Duck fan on an unrelated
topic, and two messages between (I think) Tryg H. and James W. who are,
of course, on here.
And as I described it, that is not a Disney section which people
must go out of their way to sign up for... it is available to the
thousands of COMPUSERVE comics forum viewers at all times, and shows up
on their list of options. It's about what I'd expected...

I have been playing with the thought for some time to make a document about
strange words, expressions, references, background material etc. for
Barkses work. There exists such a thing for the books of Terry Pratchett, a
very helpful thing for those of us who dont immediately understand every
hidden reference and therefore miss the joke.
For such a reference book, you would simply have to mark things you send
with story/page/panel. For the story could be used the comic book code and
issue and if it is story 1, 2 or 3, Front page, Back page, Inside front
page, Inside back page, etc.
For instance, as I gave a speech in june, I was given the full meaning and
history behing the Brass Monkey (which even greatly confirms my sexual
reference theory), and after a speech in August, I was told about the real
possibilities of Nutmeg tea - in Norway it will probably be forbidden to
sell it soon because of the drug effect (so Scrooge WOULD be able to work
24 hours a day!). I didnt know about those things, and how are you going to
ask people when you dont know that you dont know?
And did you ever realize that when Scrooge is going to Asia in order to buy
Taj Mahal, Mount Everest and Hong Kong, it is one of Barkses harshest
references to the Disneyland craze - the Americans that think that they can
1) buy everything, and 2) move it to the USA, and 3) treat it as
entertainment. With money you can buy yourself a dream come true, uprooted
from all historical and geographical context, like the synthetic castle in
Disneyland. I didnt realize that until a few years ago!
When I made that Duckmobiles book about the cars in Barkses comics, I for
the first time realized that even such ordinary things was joked with in a
graphical way, and that if you knew more about cars, you would get bigger
laughs.
There are a lot of weird words and expressions in Barks, and I for one am
longing to see detailed explanations.
There are a lot of reference literature already, and of course it is
possible to refer to articles, such as the ones in the Barks Library, for
instance on the Gold Rush references. The National Geographic references
would play a natural part in this reference book also.
The file could be organized such as within the Pratchett community: people
read the reference document to see if there is an explanation or whatever
to that particular thing they have in mind, and if not they write something
about it. They even compete to dig up the most absurd references, and that
makes good fun!
The reference book could even contain the censored lines from comics that
has been rewritten, like Treasure of Marco Polo.
Well, fans, what do you think?

is also used by Warner Bros. for a few Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck shorts.
I'm not sure if her actual name is Witch Hazel, but she is drawn very
similar and has the same voice (June Foray, I hope I am remembering this
right, she was also the voice of Rocky Squirrel and about a zillion other
cartoon characters).

I have a freeflag on com pub and comics there....If you all
think it would be worth it, I can post echoes of the Digest up
there & see if it will either stimulate the conversation there

I made a mistake here. I thought the 24-page chapter was #9, but it is
#8. This means:

In 1992, he drew a story about Columbus. This was a Euro-centric story.
Scrooge went back in time and met Columbus the moment he "discovered" America.
Scrooge goofed up: Columbus never told anyone about his discovery.
When Scrooge gets back in 1992, all is normal (Duckburg still exists, so
it's obviously not in America), except that there are no potatoes, tobacco,
hammocks or other stuff that came from America.
The story had some educational goal (in the Columbus-year 1992), but I think
this one will never be printed in the USA.. 8-)

I'm not too keen on seeing this digest reposted on CI$. I for one
would act more cautiously if this was being crossposted to CI$. I
think if CompuServe's Disney section is going to survive (and I hope
it does), it has to do it on its own. I've posted some stuff there
this morning to try and stimulate conversation (i.e. from someone other
than Don and Tryg) But, that is as far as I'm going. If I don't get
any decent responses, I'll end up reposting that stuff here.

I'm also a Terry Pratchett fan and love the Annotated Terry
Pratchett. I think an Annotated Carl Barks would be a great
idea. My only comment is that I hope the messages would be
posted to the list istead of being sent directly to you. I

There have been a few posts about the origin/inspiration for
this story which appeared in the latest issue of Uncle Scrooge
Aventures. What did people think of it?
I'll be blunt, I thought it was the worst Uncle Scrooge story
I've ever read. First, I thought the whole topic was very
un-Disney. Second, I thought that Scrooge was portrayed
totally out of character. He was treated as an old and nearly
helpless man. The only reason he survived is because the
nephews were so smart and resourcefull. This Scrooge McDuck
was not "smarter then the smarties" nor was he "tougher than
the toughies". Third, there is one scene early on where Scrooge
is trying to hide from the dogs and complains about the fact
that it is hopeless because he doesn't have a gun. This is
suppose to be Scrooge McDuck, not the Punisher. Fourth, Scrooge's
line where he warns that he has an itchy trigger finger was probably
the single most uncharactristic line I've ever heard him mutter.
