It's nice to see that the ftp files are really USED.
But the file "swedish.dbl" actually does contain the story codes and
Swedish KA&Co issue numbers, though you might not have recognised them...

The first number on the line is something like 670802, which indicates
it's the 2nd story in Kalle Anka #8 of 1967.
After that, somewhere on the line is a code like "W OS 456-01", which is
the story code (e.g. indicating Western's One Shot #456, first story).

(BTW: New database files are in production... I hope to be finished next week.)

Aha! Got you!
I haven't a chance of remembering all the contents of the long
messages I've sent you several times before you started disappearing on
me -- but one question that I know I keep asking is about the Gladstone
album that your friend gave me in San Diego. One more time: he said you
gave him no instructions when I asked if I was supposed to autograph it
and return it (as I thought I might recall you requesting in advance) or
if it was a gift to me (since it was already autographed by Barks). What
did you intend I do with it??????
New comments as regards that DD 60th Birthday Italian Digest...
you refered several times to my story and the Van Horn story being cut
up in that edition; there WAS no Van Horn story in that issue. But I do
want to say something about that Marco Rota story; I think I've said in
the past that I'd taken a quick look at that story when I was in the
offices of one of the European publishers, and at the time all I had
time to notice was the truly bizarre opening of $crooge finding Baby
Donald when a storm blows his egg out of a nest in a tree. Sick.
Twisted. Ecch. Enough on that. But for the first time I was able to look
at the rest of that tale carefully. I still can't read it -- but it
looks like the rest of the story isn't as nuts as the beginning -- but
the main thing I noticed was the ART. Y'know, that must easilly be the
best art I've ever seen in a Duck comic!!! Particularly the opening and
closing shots of the Duckburg skylines! I've never seen much of Rota's
art, but are all his stories that beautiful?! Or did he try extra hard
on that one? I could work for a month on each page and never draw that
well! I wish I could just sit and ask some REAL artist just how they
draw such gorgeous buildings and backgrounds like Rota did here! This is
really fabulous art!

Thanks for the tip! I tried it and it worked great! I did have to
specify a time greater than the default 60 seconds and, on my system at
least, the time parameter has the format -t xxx instead of -txxx.

Now this gave me a list of those who receive the messages directly, but
those people who get digests are not their. I would guess that they are
on a different list.

One interesting thing, I thought, was that two of the entries
<disney-comics at ifi.uio.no> and <disney-comics at corp.portal.com> look like
lists in themselves. Now if they feed other lists, there could be quite
a network of list readers out there...

<disney-comics at ifi.uio.no> is fed into USENET as the newsgroup
fa.disney-comics. This newsgroup is available to anybody with access to USENET
in Norway (the fa groups are not gated out of the country).

There is very little logging of who reads these newsgroups, but they are
easily available to all students at the universities and colleges here in
Norway. Considering the popularity of Donald Duck in this country, the
newsgroup readers probably make up a substantial number of the total
subscribers to the disney-comics list.

Is it a two-way feed? If a USENET reader posts to fa.disney-comics,
will their post show up in the disney-comics mailing list or just in
the newsgroup? (ie, are there entire discussions going on that we on
the mailing list are missing?)

I said I would send the list of subscribers of the list to the list,
as there seemed to be some interest in it, but on second thought I
won't as it's rather long and I guess most people in fact aren't
interested in it. Tell me if I'm wrong.

Instead I will send it out on demand. Here's the condensed version,
just showing our geographical distribution:

Currently the list has 135 subscribers, with the following domain
distribution: (I list all top domains, and subdomains with more than
one member.) (Note that the info just comes from the addresses; where

One of the Norwegian addresses is an automatic address that puts the
messages in a local "Usenet Newsgroup" where several people can read
it. Another address is an automatic forwarder to Portal. I have no
idea how many readers we have at those places.

Thanks for that list of users. Of course, though I asked to see
it, it's of limited use since a lot of it reads like gibberish. And
those "subscribers" who are actually destinations which pick up the
Digest for other networks sort of renders the list even more difficult
to comprehend. I also don't see any real reason to worry about someone
not wanting it known that they are on the list since it would be so easy
for them to list some other name or code in their ID if they wanted to
stay anonymous.
Anyway, as with all computer forums, I am amazed with how many
people are reading these messages but not participating in the
discussions. This is fine -- participation is not required -- and if
EVERYBODY participated EVERY day, we'd all have no time to do anything
in life but read the Digests. I'd hope that everyone who sees these
Digests would make a comment once every few months... that would be
nice.
But are ALL those people really seeing this stuff every day? Or
are most of those just "ghost" destinations? I guess there's no way to
know this. Perhaps only 10-20% of those names are actually reading these
Digests? Look at all those countries represented! That would be swell if
we were such a globe-spanning community here, but I somehow feel like
that list is misleading. There are two names on there from COMPUSERVE
where I am (Heide MacDonald and Stefanie Cranfill) who I have never seen
make a contribution and who, over on the COMPUSERVE comics forum, I have
never heard comment that they ever see these Digests. I'm gonna check on
that.
Anyway, thanks...

I think a lot of people are reading it, but it's a big step from there to
auctually writing something. Most Europeans doesn't have English as their
first language, and it's a bit frustrating not being able to write things
like I would in Norwegian. <- Good example... :/

It is a one way feed only, but it seems that everybody send their entries
to this list. I tried once to send an entry to the newsgroup and it got there
all right, but nobody saw it (sob!). I follow both and so far the mailing
list particpants have not missed anything significant.

Remind me again what the difference is between the Digest I see
and the "newsgroup" that you mention. What goes on there? Is it only
Disney comics related? When I post my replies to the Digest, do they
find their way to the "newsgroup" or stop at the Digest? What? Who?
Which?

Maybe Per can answer this better than me, but here goes:

Every entry on this list get posted on a Scandinavian Netnews activity
named fa.disney-comics, and that activity is only the entries from this
list. That means that most Scandinavians with netnews access can read this.
The can also comment on what they se. But if the do
that, their entry does not come back to us on the maillist here, it
remains on the Netnews activity. In theory that means the there could be
an independent discussion that would never reach us here. In practice,
this has not happened.

But since the Netnews is open to everyone it is impossible to estimate
how many actually reads what is going on here.

The digest you see is all the days entries packed into one big file. The
Netnews readers see every single entry separately on the newslist.

And to answer your final question, all your replies goes to the netnews
activity.

Just thought I would mention that there is a discussion about
splitting up the rec.arts.disney Internet newsgroup into the following
factions:

rec.arts.disney.roleplaying (should be FDC.role-playing)
rec.arts.disney.television
rec.arts.disney.animation (should be .movies (including live-action
and animation)).
rec.arts.disney.parks
rec.arts.disney.misc

Still not much for us there, is it?
