This autumn will see an important Barks Event
in Oslo, namely the Grand Exhibition
CARL BARKS: THE ARTIST AND STORY TELLER,
to be hosted by "Serieteket", a public library
in Oslo specialising in comics and comic books,
over a period stretching eight weeks.
An exclamation mark is called for, and I place
it here: ! . The official opening will be
on Wednesday 22nd of September.
The exhibition stems from Helsinki, Finland,
and consists of a rather impressive list of
Barks items: oil paintings, original drawings,
seriegraphics, lithographics, and original
American comics. I understand these items
are all in private ownership of eager Finnish
Barksists: Marko Lepp?l?, Juhani Tolvanen and
Kalervo Pulkkinen. The exhibition has travelled
from Helsinki to Amsterdam, and is soon about
to make its next leap, to Oslo.
(Have there been reports on this earlier, from
either Helsinki or Amsterdam?)
Importantly, the Serieteket organisers plan
to use this unique opportunity to host a
series of Barks-related "events", ranging from
public lectures to panel discussions and the
showing of Barks-related Disney animated cartoons.
These Barks Events will take place
*every Wednesday from 18:00 to 20:00*
and are of course open to the public at large. Some
of the themes, for these *Barks Wednesday Events*,
are as follows (I will later report on this
in more detail):
* Grand "official opening", with a.o. Anders

You ask a very good, very complicated question (which you summarize
yourself above). Even Disney has not thoroughly sorted out just who
really goes where in terms of strict licensing protocol - the issues
involving PK Duck are one example - so it boils down to Gemstone and
Disney coming to an understanding, on a case-by-case basis, about
whether, and even how much, Gemstone might use a particular character
not normally understood to be in the "standard" character range.
Now, some characters have no licensing impetus behind them in the
States - Bucky Bug being an example - and Gemstone has, in a sense,
assumed their usage by default. As long as the basic legal proprieties
are observed, and the royalties are paid, Disney seems willing to leave
it at that. There may even be a provision in the license for such
things, though there I only speculate.
And you will be seeing Runaway Brain in Mickey Mouse and Friends 269,
shipping 9/15.

Debate" which occured here on this List, WOW! *almost* one year ago exactly! :-)
Yes, Saban... well, Saban & Bandai are pretty much interchangable in my impression
for the style of animation they produce under their name... I think they may even
be linked somehow, but I'm not really familiar with thier corporate identities.
Anyhow, The same holds true concerning my fears that the animated series
W.I.T.C.H. will end up looking very much like the churned-out Japanese-style anime
that is currently flooding the CARTOON NETWORK, etc.
While, admittedly, I AM a fan of much of the beautiful anime that has come out of
Ghibli Studio in Japan, such as GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES, ONLY YESTERDAY, SPIRITED
AWAY, WHISPER OF THE HEART, etc. (some of which Disney has licensed for
distribution in the USA), what I dislike is the more (for lack of a better
word) "slapstick" style anime (with the unmoving lower jawbone during dialogue,
the eyes that change into throbbing hearts, the enlarged heads when one character
is speaking down to another, the teardrops and other graphics that appear to the
side of their faces, etc....). If the animators at Saban give us a more Ghibli-
stylized presentation, I might just approve! :-)
To me, the style of art that appears in the "comicbook" W.I.T.C.H. is much more
serious and beautifully rendered. I fear W.I.T.C.H., in the hands of Saban, will
be very similar in presentation to SAILOR MOON, DRAGONBALL Z, or even the new TEEN
TITANS cartoon.
I am a fan of the comic W.I.T.C.H., but am disappointed by Disney's release
through Hyperion Books which nearly nullifies the comicbook version. Add to that
my fear of Disney's possible animation choice, and I just think the U.S. is
getting a raw deal.

As has been mentioned in recent messages, Gemstone is not presently authorized to use the new disney characters created after the mid 1980's. Relatively new continuing "disney" characters, i.e. created after the death of Walt Disney, were utilized by Gold Key and Whitman comics until they ceased publication in 1983. These characters, mainly in movie adaption comics, included aristocats/kittens, and the universes of Robin Hood, the Rescuers, and the Fox and the Hound. When Gladstone took over and except for Duck Tales ( as far as I know) they did not use any new characters. Comic book versions of the Black Cauldron and Oliver and Company were published by Scholastic Paperbacks Inc. Duck Tales was based on the Television series and was really itself based on the Uncle Scrooge comics. When the Disney Company took over again in 1990, they produced spin-off comics of The Little Mermaid/Sebastian, Roger Rabbit, The Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. After the "implosion" however, these Disney Company spin-offs mainly ceased, and the great dispersal began. Marvel produced The Lion King, Pocahontas, and The Huncback of Notre Dame. Hercules, in a take-along size, was produced by Acclaim Comics. Tarzan and Atlantis were produced by Dark Horse Comics. Recently take-along comics of Lilo and Stitch as well as Monsters,Inc (Pixar) have been produced by Tokyopop Manga.
I am sure we would all hope that all the disney comic characters could gather together under one roof, and certainly they could be well cared for by Gemstone. ( By the way, the Disney Company has accomplised this for cartoons in the House of Mouse.)

I saw the Finnish Donald Duck 70-year exhibit in Amsterdam (actually Amstelveen). It is
well worth seeing. There were lots of very funny and nicely painted oil paintings of
Ducks, and Marko Leppälä's collection was fantastic. He had lots of original US Barks
comics, including original copies of giveaways: "Donald Duck Tells About Kites", and
"Donald Duck's Atom Bomb"!
I strongly suggest that if you're near Oslo, that you see it.
The Dutch Publishers (Sanoma Uitgevers) also had a very nice exhibit of artwork at all
stages (for Duck stories), as well as human-scale models of Gyro Gearloose's inentions
that appeared in the comic books. It was great seeing the "Smile Suspender", "bicycle
powered stilt walker", "rocket Chair", "back scratcher" and others. There was also a
human-scale model of Donald's
car.

well worth seeing. There were lots of very funny and nicely painted oil paintings of
Ducks, and Marko Leppälä's collection was fantastic. He had lots of original US Barks
comics, including original copies of giveaways: "Donald Duck Tells About Kites", and
"Donald Duck's Atom Bomb"!
I strongly suggest that if you're near Oslo, that you see it.
The Dutch Publishers (Sanoma Uitgevers) also had a very nice exhibit of artwork at all
stages (for Duck stories), as well as human-scale models of Gyro Gearloose's inentions
that appeared in the comic books. It was great seeing the "Smile Suspender", "bicycle
powered stilt walker", "rocket Chair", "back scratcher" and others. There was also a
human-scale model of Donald's
car.

I have just learned an important lesson the hard way. My basement was
flooded last Saturday and I lost almost everything under 4 feet of water.
Looking back, I realize it was foolish to store important items and any
paper products such as comic books down there. Many valuable comic
books and a couple original drawings by Don Rosa were ruined. Please
do not make the same mistake I did.
