story, and naturally go to

It has worked before!

Just go to the new search engine at http://coa.inducks.org - it's up to date
and quite a lot more comfortable to use.
The Swedish version hadn't been updated for years - so it's not a big loss
at all...

There is a discussion going on a Norwegian forum right now about the
McDuck tartan.
Carl Barks wrote the story "The hound of the Whiskervilles" in 1960 and
here Scrooge sees the McDuck tartan for the first time in his life. He
knows that it exists but he have never seen it before.
But in the "Life and Times" series (Uncle Scrooge 293) Scrooge have it
as early as 1898-1902
Is this an error from your side Don? Did you forget about "The hound of
the Whiskervilles" when you wrote this story?

Good timing -- I just today returned from a backpacking trip into the Rocky
Mountains so that I can answer this query...
No, not an error. I was well aware that $crooge claimed to have never seen
the tartan before -- after all, I had to make careful references to that
very Whiskerville story at numerous points in the Lo$. But I found it very
interesting to use the tartan in the Lo$, so that was a Barksian "fact" that
I chose to ignore.... or I can simply say that $crooge apparently just
*forgot* that he'd seen it before, due to the memory lapses referred to in
several Barks tales, such as the Tralla La adventure.

I've been wondering for some time now: what about Fort Duckburgh? In
your stories, the nephews already know its existence and former location
when (or shortly after) they join the Junior Woodchucks. In Barks' story
(The Money Well), they are surprised when Scrooge tells them about it.
Are they having memory lapse problems too?

I was in Scotland a few years ago and a company was selling paper copies of
tartans.
They had one registered by Walt Disney from 1942
It was called the MacDuck Final Version, Corporate Tartan (Ancient Colours),
worn by Scrooge MacDuck, uncle to Donald Duck and great uncle to Huey,
Dewey, and Louie.
I don't know if it is the same as the Hound's story tartan.
I can send you a scan.

Uncle $crooge, or someone very much like him, appears for the *very* first
time in the short movie "The spirit of 43" from - you guessed it - 1943. It
is a propaganda short where he is Donald's good spirit telling him he must
pay his taxis to help support the war and beat the Axis. Donald's bad spirit
who is telling him to SPEND in the same short has a Hitler hair and
mustache. Very veird. And US is vearing a kilt with a tartan in the film,
blue stripes on an orange (or red?, maybe the colours have faded)
background. Very primitive tartan. I assume that is the one Disney
copyrighted.
The short is in the DVD collection "Walt Disney Treasures. On the Front
Lines" with much of Disney's war production, including "Der Fuehrer's face"
and "Chicken Little" and other strange and facinating stuff, some never
released since the war. Only avaialble in sone 1 DVD so far, and will
probabaly never be in a Scandinavian sone 2.
