Chicago? *ears perk up* That's not prohibitively far from

Bob, which format were these gags made in? A la the daily strip? Which
characters were used? When were the gags made? How many did you and Van
Horn create? Were they all used?

And I assume Donald was the lead character in all of these. Right?

re:Today's Topics:

1. Orange Juice (Lars Jensen)

Hi, Lars -
I wrote them in the format they appeared on the side of the orange juice
carton. As I recall, there was a "splash" panel (title panel) at the top, with
four panels beneath (maybe six), similar to the first page of a comic book story,
except that the proportions were slightly different to fit the shape of the
carton.

<< Which characters were used?

I think one used the DuckTales characters, featuring the nephews and
Launchpad. Another was Donald and the nephews. And I think I did a third one that
featured Uncle Scrooge. I seem to remember one featuring Daisy Duck, too. So maybe
four all together. But as I think about this some more, I'm thinking there
MIGHT have been six gags. Now I'm not sure.

<< When were the gags made?

I'm guessing around 1991-92, maybe somewhere in there. If I get lucky and can
dig up one from my storage locker I can look for a date.

<< How many did you and Van Horn create? Were they all used?

I think I did three or four (or six?) and they were all used, but not all at
once. As I recall they appeared over a period of about a year.

<< And I assume Donald was the lead character in all of these. Right?

No. As I mentioned above, I think Launchpad was in one. Donald might have
been in the rest, along with Scrooge, and Daisy, but I'd have to find them to be
sure. Van Horn might know better than me.

Thanks for asking.

I am scheduled to be at the MotorCity Chicago Comic Fest. I used to always
go to the Chicago Comic Con until WIZARD bought it out -- I can't
participate in anything sponsored by WIZARD since they represent every
single thing that's wrong with modern comic collecting in America, and even
caused a significant portion of it. But I miss my many Chicago friends and
was glad to accept an invitation to go there by my other friends at
MotorCity Comics whose normal base of operations is Detroit. They hold shows
in Chicago exactly for the reason I state -- that there are lots of us to
can't tolerate that WIZARD style and philosophy but miss having a good
comics fest in the Chicago area.
There seems to be a website at:
http://www.motorcityconventions.com/chicago_comic_fest/index.html
...but I notice they must be too busy with traveling to shows with their
vast displays of old comics and whatnot to be keeping it up to date. I just
saw MotorCity Comics owner Mike Goldman with his gigantic traveling
inventory in Baltimore yesterday, and he was even then talking about
overwork and lack of help, so I can assume he's being run ragged this
season.

My brother and I pestered my father endlessly to get a carton of this orange juice (we just loved the gimick of a comic on your breakfast drink). If I remember correctly, this orange juice was not on par with Tropicana or other leading brands. Am I right? Do they even make that orange juice anymore?

still around, and it actually is a leading brand.

That *was* Toby???

LOL! I had commented on my Message Board about the FILM version:

"Things I wasn't so thrilled with...
1. Clarabelle loves Goofy (I'm a strong advocate for Clarabelle's devotion to
Horace, even when "playing a part as an actor in a role."
2. The Beagle Boys, while obvious, though not specifically "called" Beagle Boys,
just seemed a bit out of kilter... can't explain it.
3. The "Troubador" Turtle narrator. I hated his voice and character 'cause he
reminded me too much of the stupid frog "Jean-Claude" from THE SWAN PRINCESS film.
He came off as annoying IMHO.
4. I would have like the Turtle better maybe if he was identified as Toby
Tortoise. His image was very much like the traditional look of Toby, but his
coloration was more "yellow" and he didn't have the lethargic speech and
mannerisms of Toby. I can see the turtle as a revival of Toby, but he really
didn't "act" like Toby.
Otherwise, there wasn't much to complain about."

The reason I didn't *think* it was Toby was because he was so much more energetic
than Toby from the Silly Symphonys. I am happy to hear that he was indeed Toby,
though. It's good to see Disney make use of their stable of Limbo characters
rather than create a brand new one for no real reason.

Question: Is his yellowish/ochre coloration correct or was that a mistake? I
mean, yes, he appears a little yellowish in the old Silly Symphonys but I always
assumed that was due to the aging of the film and he should be much greener.

Oh, and just so you don't think I only had negatives to say, here's the positives:
"Some things I REALLY loved were:
1. "Evil" Clarabelle Cow (LOL!!!!) "Moooo-ha-ha-ha!" oh and April Winchell... I
love her!
2. Pete in the role he plays best (Mickey's arch-nemesis!)
3. The return of Pete's "peg-leg"
4. Mickey, Donald & Goofy as Pals who stick together!
5. Mickey & Pluto befuddled by Donald's "Nash-speak"
6. Daisy as Minnie's sassy Lady-in-Waiting
7. Seeing Mickey, Goofy, Donald & Pluto as kids.
...and many others"

Thanks,

Rich

Hey Rich,

You just posted an answer to one of my DDB-mails (re: Musketeers) on
the regular DCML:
http://stp.ling.uu.se/pipermail/dcml/2004-September/028106.html
Please don't do this in the future without asking me. A lot of
information I pass along to the private DDB-list? about Egmont,
Gemstone, and Disney? is NOT material I want to make public on the
DCML.
I'm CCing this to the DDB-list to inform any members who've recently
joined.

Apologetically, David
David Gerstein
Oops, I earlier sent a letter to the DCML that should have gone
someplace else. Sounded like a misbegotten briefing on national
security.
Me:

> A lot of information I pass along to the private DDB-list [...] is NOT
> material I want to make public on the DCML.

To explain: the DDB-list, where my letter should have gone, is the
mailing list where the Inducks team discusses its comics indexing work.
On it I at times discuss story credits that I learned from old
documents at Egmont. Or from looking through dusty Disney documents on
S-code production. Or from freelancing on the new Gemstone comics (so I
knew a story code on the recent "Musketeers" adaptation, though it was
published codeless in Italy).
Since some of my older data is not 100% certain, or because in some
cases Egmont asked me to share it only with other indexers, I need to
keep much of the information private at first, DDB-list only. The end
results ARE public, though, and DCML members can access them through
coa.inducks.org.

Best, David

Hello everyone. I joined the list because I have a question I'm hoping
someone can answer. I am not a comic book collector, but in fact I collect toy cash
registers.

I purchased two 1950's Uncle Scrooge comic books because they have cash
registers on the front. One is 1958 # 22 and has scrooge with a cash register
briefcase and the other is 1952 #2 and has Scrooge playing a cash register shaped
piano. Both published by Dell. This second one is the one I have a question
about which you can see a photo of on my Wish List page below.

http://www.supertechnogirl.com/wishlist.htm

I bought on eBay what appears to be a later reproduction of the 1952 comic,
with the same picture on the front but using a different colored background
which is pink. It was published by Whitman in the 1980's (based on dates inside)
and is numbered #183 although the original copyright date is inside.

I'd like to know why Disney printed a reproduction of this early comic. I h
ave never seen it before on eBay although I see the original fairly often.

Thanks very much for any thoughts!

~ Cybele

That would be very helpful for our Inducks index!

According to what we know thus far, there were 6 gags in 2 batches (?).

Hm... I don't even remember where we got the information in the first
place...

Here's some interesting new from

http://www.animationnation.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topicf=1t=0091
26

From Floyd Norman:

I've had the pleasure of working with him over the last ten years or
so, usually at Disney in Feature Animation and in Publishing. True,
Daan did work on "The Three Musketeers," but as always, his stay was
short.
Don't worry about Daan going back to Europe. He's continually doing
that, and he always comes back. He does the most amazing drawings, and
his writing is pretty good as well, though a bit on the dark side. Must

be a Dutch thing.
I would love to have "The Flying Dutchman" on any project I'm working
on.

From Dan D. Sparks:

It was ten years ago already, when I worked with Daan at the early
beginnings of Warner Features. It was with him I first encountered the
word "Glom". He thought I was weird for not knowing what that word
meant. I thought he was weird for knowing that word. Ten years later I
realize he was right.

From Daan himself (via Steve G):

Yes, I will return to my
native country, the Netherlands (soon) after one year of Dreamworks
storyboarding, to continue my comic book work (full time).
My last completed Duck stories for Egmont Publishing were a redrawn
'King Scrooge the First' and my own 'Easter Basket Case', a dark
(indeed) easter romp.
Just written and scribbled: a golf story (Luck or Skill?) and a
concession stand in the dessert-story.
Stories both steeped in melancholy and despair, yet optimistically
submitted for editorial scrutiny and approval.
Will I never learn?
A public service message for you all.

I hope Jippes meant to write "desert-story". Otherwise, the lead
character is gonna get soggy feet behind that concession stand.
