garfield
condorito(from chile)
mangas
evangelion
samurai X
saint seiya
inuyasha
Mexican Fan-Most of those comics are unknown to me. I am especially curious about Mafalda and Condorito. I am a fan of "funny animal" comics. Are those two strips in the "funny animal", funny human" or realistic comic genre? Is it possible for you to post scans of one page of each?
I know almost all the titles on this list. There's a wikipedia entry on "Condorito". I haven't read the comics but, it looks very interesting. Here's a link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condorito I haven't heard of "Mafalda" though.

Thanks! It looks very interesting. It IS funny animal! And satire of human nature! Right up my alley! It seems that the main character is lazy, but gets by on his wits (a bit like José Carioca). But, Condorito also has family problems, and problems with many more regular characters (at least a lot more than the US version of Carioca). The artwork looks very nice, too. The artist's name is René Ríos. I wonder if he's related to other Chileno cartoonist, Victor Arriagada Ríos?

For Mafalda, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafalda . I remember reading this strip back in the 1970s.

I really like the look of Condorito. the little I've seen of it seems funny, too. But maybe it's more joke and gag-related, and not so story-oriented as Barks?
I like the look of Mafalda, too. Is she like a cross between "Peanuts" and "Little Lulu"?

No, she is more like a cross between peanuts and a political cartoon.
The comic was very popular in sweden in the 1970'ies, and other works by Quino (the author and artist of Mafalda) are currently being published even today.

Now that you mention it having been published in Sweden, I seem to remember seeing it, and wondering how a Swedish strip had a Latin name. I remember a little girl making ironic political comments. I'll have to look at it some more.

I rarely read comics anymore that aren't Disney Duck-related, but I was really into French-language comics for a while (though I had a Beetle Bailey obsession in the late Seventies that lasted some years).
I still have several volumes of Tintin, Asterix (French and English with both of them), Sammy, Les Tuniques Bleues as well as a few manga and doujinshis...not to mention a scattered collection of Archies. :D

I used to read Archie Comics and any other comic book based on a popular TV Show.

Cool. :) Don't you miss comics the way they used to be? Seems like (except for the Archies), everything's either manga or graphic novels. There's certainly nothing wrong with those (I like them in fact), but you wonder what happened to regular comic books.

I had forgotten to mention Pogo and Fix and Foxi, and some of the strips from Eppo. Now that Daan Jippes is drawing Havank, I might take a peak at that series, once in a while.

I do miss having newsstands and grocery store and drugstore magazine racks full of Disney, Warner Brothers, MGM, Walter Lantz, Walt Scott, Animal Comics, and lot's of other comedy comics. But, at over 60 years of age, the newstand operators wouldn't allow me to sit and read 20-30 of them on a Saturday morning, and then buy only the Disney ones (or only buy one of them, and wait for the others to be sold used, for a nickel, at the local drug store).

The Direct Sales Market killed them in the US, making comics inaccessible to new readers. They simply don't know where to find them. At one brief period of time the DSM was a boon to the industry, but it died with the end of the 90s speculator rush.
I still read plenty of non-Disney comics, but they are mostly collections of reprints of 60s, 70s, and 80s Marvel and DC comics. Almost no new comics from those companies interest me anymore. I'd love to read all the international Scrooge/Donald stories but I'm limited to English unfortunately, so I have to wait for Gemstone to reprint those they get to.

I heard that India publishes comics in English (maybe Egmont is the publisher). I'm not sure if they can ship to foreign countries, though.
