A garment/cotton/wool diaper leaking around the back of her left leg, and an uneven floor? The floors in old, ramshackle houses are not level.

Quote from user: DarkAshAnother possibility that everyone will dismiss is that given the rather ramshackle condition of the house as seen in the picture by the missing and cracked plaster on the rear wall, the puddle could be from a leak in the roof and it is in an unfortunate the location in relation to Hortense. The reason why it appears yellow in color could be the reflection of the walls which are also yellow. Besides, if it was urine, why is it only behind and to the right of her? Wouldn't it be around her and more toward the front?

This is just my humble opinion and am not trying to take the fun out of this mystery.

To me it's obvious that it's a puddle of liquid. It's also obvious that it looks like urine. Now, I suppose it can be rationalized as a plumbing leak. But even if this is the case, from the location, shape and color of the puddle, it's also obvious to me what Rosa's mischievous intentions were. ;)

So apparently a lot has happened since I last replied! Well time to get up to speed.

The "golden" coloring of Scrooge's "change" in the money bin has always been standard in the comics in many European countries. In many European countries they don't pay with the Dollar in Duckburg but with the currency of that country or with a "fantasy" currency (as in the German versions of the comics where it has always been Taler and Kreuzer, not Mark and Pfennig or, now, Euro and Cent).

The coloring of the coins would follow in those countries rather what one is used to have as color of coins there. And while Americans are used to coins with silver color, many Europeans daily see rather such with gold color. Golden color have for instance the 10, 20 and 50 Cent coints of the Euro and the 1 and 2 Euro coins at least mostly, as much as the 5 and 10 Pfennig coins of the former Mark. (They are of course as less made of real gold as the US coins of real silver. ;-))

But even in such countries outside the US where the Dollar was kept in Duckburg, I don't know how much the average reader really knows what color the US Dollar coins have or if he matters what color the stuff has in Duckburg. American coins are not something one is normally confronted with every day in Europe. As far as I know the Dollar is (was?) used in the comics in Italy. I've seen many pictures fro the Italian comics, however, with golden colored coins ...

Euro change. Probably nothing worth soon, but would Scrooge make dive into "gold" ...

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for sharing! I guess I assumed that they would have kept Duckburg in the US, but really in most stories it doesn't matter. And also that Euro money is pretty awesome looking, I didn't know that it has mostly gold appearance. I guess I'm closed minded or something but I never thought about it. Actually, with the golden coloured money and that coin with the mix of gold and silver colouring reminds me of the Loonies and Toonies of Canada.

That is a great drawing you got Mr. M. (also that is a pretty epic shirt I must say haha). Aww man, lots in Europe and the US gets a chance to see Don Rosa. Not here though *le pouting* XD

As for the urine thing, wow I never noticed that. DarkAsh's theory does many sense with just a leaky roof or something and the exact placement isn't right... but perhaps she shifted a little before the picture was taken to get out of the puddle? That explains her expression. That can't be very comfortable...

Am I the only one that finds it odd that we are talking about Hortense's bodily fluids on the ground? It's not as weird as the Magica's feet thread I've heard about, but it's getting up there...

Serious discussion on the minutia of cartoon characters always reminded me of this...

It sure would be great if someone would work with Don and publish a complete well done Don Rosa Disney works collection in English. I bet that would sell!

Mr. M
Don Rosa is in Poland now (Well that's about @#$@% time!) and I got to have an interview with him for our comic book magazine. The Interview was recorded by my friend and as soon he will send it to me, we will make a transcript both in English and a Polish translation and both are avelable on-line.

The interview is pretty long. At one interesting point Don Rosa talks about how he imagine HD&L parents and his oryginal intention for the "HD&L meet their parents story" (spoilers - The deledet scene in "Return to Xanadu" had nothing to do with the parents, it's just something fans made up)

Don Rosa was incredebly nice, funny at moment and it was shared some interesting information. Some parts are very Polish-related (Rosa hates Polish edition of "Hall of fame" wich was done poorly) but overall it was a great time! :D

P.S.
I had a Beagle Boy t-shirt during the interview! :D

Really? Because when I asked him, he specifically told me that it did.
Mr. M
Odd. In our interview he told us that it was the fans who made the conention betwen "the deledet scene in Xanadu" and HD&L's parents, he never inteded for it to be an actuall hint... well any hint related to the boys parents any way. He also talk how he never actually intedned to make such story, it was just something fans ask him for years and years which he sadly coudn't make since there was no resolution for such scenario (well, one that wasn't too depresing) plus he also talk how HD&L parents would propably be boring characters since he imagine them as adult versions of HD&L and wouldn't had any flaws like Donald and Scrooge. (I myself don't find it boring but that's Don's opinion ;) )

In his commentary on the story in US357, he says, of the sketch in question, that it "was meant to establish a basis for another story set in Tralla La which would involve a plot that Duckfans were asking me to undertake 19 years ago, and which for which I still get a few requests each week." I guess I can imagine him coming up with that explanation after the fact, but the question remains: what, then, WAS the purpose of that deleted segment? It's definitely hinting at SOMETHING.

I don't know the referenced sketch, but hasn't Rosa been asked many times to do a story about the death of Scrooge?

I'm glad Don Rosa didn't do a death of Scrooge story. Do you know how disturbing that would have been?

I'm pretty sure Donald kills him in Return to Duckburg Place.

When I talked to Don Rosa at the Baltimore Comic-Con, I think in 2007 (he had a pile of copies of the Gemstone L&T Companion to sign), I asked him how he thought HDL's parents had ended up in Tralla La. He asked something to the effect of, "How did you know about that?" and I said, of course, it was the deleted page from his original story-board script for "Return to Xanadu" and his comments on it, printed in U$ 357 (2006). "Oh!" he said, a bit surprised, apparently having forgotten what exactly he said there. Then he went on to tell me that he thought perhaps HDL's parents had gone to the area as part of some Peace Corps-type work (not the Peace Corps itself, the timing isn't right, it wasn't created yet), and got stranded near Tralla La.

For those without access to U$ 357: in the deleted page, the lama asks for HDL specifically to come see him, and says to them: "My aide, Ladee Dah, tells me your names are Huey, Dewey and Louie...of the land of Duckburg?" "Well, yes, that's correct." "Tralla La has many secrets...but one unspoken truth involves you children! But for now, I can tell you no more! If you do not succeed in saving our valley, this truth matters not! But if you do succeed, return here and we will speak!"

Then, Rosa says at the end of his commentary: "A bonus! Included on this page is a portion deleted from my original storyboard-script that was meant to establish a basis for another story set in Tralla La which would involve a plot that Duckfans were asking me to undertake 19 years ago, and for which I still get a few requests each week. Take a look and see if you can guess what that as yet unrevealed 'secret of Tralla La' is!"

As GeoX suggests, given the lama's focus on HDL in his hints at a secret, there's really no other story request this could possibly refer to than "please tell us what happened to HDL's parents." Don's response to me in Baltimore indicates to me that he did indeed play with the idea of having the solution to this mystery revealed in Tralla La (unless he was just confabulating to draw me off the trail...but that doesn't seem like him). But it did not seem to me from what he said to me that he had an entire story sketched out in his mind--just the germ of an idea. And it's quite likely that even if he had gone on writing stories, he would never have written this one due to the inherent difficulties in the assignment.

Here's Rosa on DCML, 15 June 2001, in response to a question based on an earlier remark of Rosa's in an interview saying that he had plans on writing a story presenting the father of HDL:

I've planned on *trying* to do this story ever since I first suggested it (and was rejected) to Gladstone in 1988. I'll hope I can do it until I *do* do it... but I'm not sure when. The problem is that there's no possible happy ending, not that I have thus far been able to figure out.
Ending 1: HD&L seek their parents and find them, and go to live with them rather than Unca Donald? No.
Ending B: HD&L seek their parents and find them, and DON'T go to live with them? No, that's sad.
Ending III: HD&L seek their parents and find out they're dead?! Nonono!
Ending four: HD&L seek their parents and don't find them. Eh. Wuzza point?
So, once I figure out that 5th possible ending, I'll go full steam ahead. Well, I've had one idea in my head for 10 years now... but it's a bit contrived and I'm not sure I like it. There's probably a better notion floatin' around out there....

And Rosa on DCML in June 2003:
...I am also told [by Egmont] that I can never try to tell the story of what happened to HD&L's parents because (as I've described in past messages) there can never be a suitable or happy ending to that tale. And that's okay with me... I knew many people have wanted me to do that story for 15 years, and I've been drawn to it and have often pondered HOW on earth to tackle it... but it's sortuva relief to be told not to even try such a problematic task. Now I can be saved from any accusations of either screwing it up or chickening out by pointing to the fact that I can't do it for Egmont. (Of course, if I reeeaaally wanted to do it, I could do it for France or Italy or... nonononononevermindnevermind!)

[end of quote]

Having HDL's parents stranded in the vicinity of Tralla La explains one part of the mystery: how they could have been completely out of contact for years without being dead (or despicable). But Rosa would still have had a challenge coming up with a satisfactory ending, if the kids did reconnect with their living parents.

...yes??Don Rosa's *parody* of a dystopian Disney future, in which the nephews are hippies/revolutionaries and their real father is Daffy Duck (!).
But that wasn't a portrayal of how Don (or anyone) thought the "real" Ducks' future would take place.

I don't think there has ever been a sizable demand for a "real" death of Scrooge story, nor should there be.

Don did once draw his famous "hey Daisy, whatever happened to Scrooge?" image??showing a future Duck family gathering at Scrooge's gravestone??to suggest that Scrooge would lead a life that was exciting to the last, and that the other Ducks would honor his memory afterward.

What more should we really need to know? IMHO, of course.

This seems to have been a misunderstanding. Here's what Don says about this:

Quote:What I told him was that I never make any clear statement about what is meant by the deleted storyboard-script scene from "Return to Xanadu" that I've allowed to be printed in books like the HoF or the DRC. I told him that the scene is there in the book for readers to see and it is up to them to decide what it might mean. I never said that they were interpreting it incorrectly! I merely say that I like to let readers figure out some things for themselves rather than to hit them over the head with it. The idea is similar to some scenes in "The Prisoner of White Agony Creek" or "Hearts of the Yukon". What readers want to see is up to them. I know what I meant, but that's my own private knowledge.
