[translateing] "In the very first fist story Dickie tend to call Scrooge "grand-dad" which makes him mad" so I guess she only did it for the sake of annoying the old guy. Still it's a bit ironic joke on Scarpa parts.

I recently ask on Italian forum why the "Arriva Paperetta Yè-Yè" was nverer publish out-side of Itally and one fan reply that in his theory Scarpa's versions of Goldies personality is presented in very diffrent way other Rosa and from what I understood the story contradict all other Scrooge/Goldie stories...

No I'm only more intrigued to read this story O_o

But it seems like Paperetta/Dickie's connection to Goldie has hardly been mentioned since her first story, so there should be no problem to publish other stories with her.

I am SURE that she was never intended to be Scrooge's real blood granddaughter.

I think the myth among "adult fans" that she is Scrooges and Goldie grand douther as a result of that "magical month" in White Agony Creek is a interesting thing and adds a bit of funny aura... Even Don Rosa mentioned at one point he like this idea ;)

I heard that after "Arriva Paperetta Yè-Yè" there was only one more story where she was mentioned as Goldies granddouther, which I woudn't mind as a ocasional refrence to remind who she is...

The very first few stories I read with the character (beafore I know who she is) years ago had her in the role of reproter for the local news paper, always seen seen jumping out with a photo camera and I like her in this role... So I simply asume it's who he is - Duckburg local photo-reproter who's friend with Donald and the rest of the cast... Years later I discover story when she was refered as HD&L as cousins so I always think of her as a character whos member of the duck family.

Interesting enough for a while I wonder was the character was in Fethry girfriend for a while, since in this one :
http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+2018-1P (which is the duck version of the play "The Importance of Being Earnest") had here as his love intrest and one more I recal had them seen dancing together on a party, but that was only coincidence...

To be honest I HATE the Polish name of the character got "Kwakunia". "Kwa" is polish for "Wak/Quack" with a cutsy end to it... It's just sound to silly to be a name and I hate that they forcing every character to have some duck related pun in the name... Oh, well! I got use to it as time went by ;)

It seems like she's better known in Poland than here in Sweden. I like the idea of her being Fethry's girlfriend.

No. Not really... Hard to tell. The character was used few times in some stories many, many years ago and then unseen until she appear unexpectedly in some stories printed in recent years... so maybe it's just me and my obssesion of paying attention to such obscure characters ;)

I'm not sure how popular she is among "avrage" Polish fans... I often talk with other comic book geeks in the local comic book store and whats interesting is that whenever we get on the subject of Disney comics EVERYBODY knows who Goldie is but I often meet people who have no clue who Brigitta MacBridge is despite the fact she is used all the time and Goldie is very obscure by comparison... This just baffle me...

I love Dickie desing in this one BTW ;) :

Last autumn I wrote some articles for a comic book magizne and I did one on the subject of Disney comics - sort of nostalgic retrospective from point of view of a fan who grow up reading Disney comics as they started to appear in Poland - and I writen about some stories that intrigued me and which I hope we finally get publish in Poland (and while my main wish was Mickey's Inferno story) I mentioned my hopes to finally get "Arriva Paperetta Yè-Yè" since it's has meeting betwen Goldie and Brigitta (and what fan don't want to see that?) but I don't think we shall get this one any time soon... :(

In this one she appears as Donald's love interest BTW : http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+1409-AP

I wish she had a better name in English, too, Mr. M. "Dickie Duck" is a pretty stupid-sounding name. Plus, if anything, it's more a male name than a female one (Dick is a nickname for Richard, and Dickie could get used for boys, rarely for men; Richardine as a girl's name is comparatively extremely rare), and I dislike the trope of giving a strong female character a male-sounding name.
I've looked at the names she's been given in other languages to see if any of the others would work in English--the German "Dolly Duck" would be even worse than Dickie. The Hungarian is Dalia--Dalia (pronounced like the flower "dahlia") Duck would be OK. Or Debbie Duck (Debbie was an alternate German name for her). Though I'd prefer giving her a different last name in English, as she has in Italian. That would keep people from assuming she's a relative of any of the Ducks we know. (We've already had lots of people assuming that Daisy is a blood relative of Donald and HDL, due to her last name and the fact that the boys call her "Aunt Daisy"--which was the common usage of well-mannered children in the 1950's and early 1960's in addressing adult friends of the family. I can attest to that; I had an "Aunt Mary" who was not a relative.) I wonder whether the author of the story where she is referred to as HDL's "cousin" thought that was because she was Scrooge's granddaughter?
Personally, I'm OK with her being Goldie's granddaughter, though I'd prefer not to have her be Scrooge's granddaughter, even if Rosa did say he liked the idea...partly that's because I imagine Goldie having a harder life if she had to raise a child on her own in that era. I'd rather imagine that she found someone else to make a family with. Scrooge can keep a shrine to her in his bedroom, but I don't want her keeping a shrine to him!
Does the origin story for Dickie tell us whether Goldie's child who became Dickie's parent was female or male?
And it's fine with me if Dickie dates Fethry now and then, but I'd hate to see her saddled with Fethry as a steady boyfriend. That's assuming she's old enough to date Fethry--we've already discussed here her fluctuating age.
And for new stories set in the present, sad to say, it's a dicey proposition to make a living as a journalist nowadays! Certainly not many photojournalist jobs for newspapers anymore.
Furienna
Here in Sweden, she's been called both "Lotta" and "Ank-Sofi" (a mix between "anka", the Swedish word for "duck", and the name Anne Sophie).
And as for her being too young, how young can she be? I know some stories have her still being a teenager (most stories over in Brazil seems to be about her life at a boarding school). But if she's old enough to have a job as a photographer, she's also old enough to date Fethry.

As I mentioned above that story was one of those "Ow, lets take the characters and retale a popular story with them playing the key parts" so it's hardly counts as canon but it lives a lot to the imagination ;)
She kisses him on the chick in this one http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+1974-AP - but theres hardly any more romantic intrest betwen them shown.

However I guess there is some chemistry becose...

...at the moment she and Fethry appear regualry in Topolino as reporters doing interviews with cellebrities etc. :

I guess times force her to take new turn in her career...

It's bizzare how in some stories she appears to be only few years older then HD&L but then I've seen stories when she was dryving a car or (in that "The Importance of Being Earnest" parody) she was in propare age to get marride...

"Lotta" or "Lottie" wouldn't suit her in English (Lottie sounds old-fashioned, and Lotta just makes you think of bad puns), but "Sophie" would be fine. In fact, it's probably my favorite of the options-from-other-translations. Again, with a last name other than "Duck." Sophie would have sounded very old-fashioned in the USA not long ago, but it's returned to popularity recently (51st most used girl's name in 2011--I just checked on NameVoyager).
When I first read about her, I translated her name "Paperetta" for myself as "Ducketta," Kettie for short. I wouldn't argue for that, but it's still better than "Dickie Duck."
Yes, agreed, if she's old enough to hold down a job, she's probably old enough to date Fethry--that's why I said it's OK with me for her to date him occasionally. Though in my mind Fethry--and Donald and Daisy--are still at least a decade older than Dickie.

Mr. M, in the Topolino stories are Dickie and Fethry reporters for a newspaper/magazine or for television?
Mr. M
For Topolino itself ;)
Those are interviews with real life cellebrieties or covrages in form of stories about Paperetta and Fethry visitng people/place to make the inrerview/covrage... Which mean they are real people and not comic characters. How on earth they could have taken all those photos and interviews if they warent real? ;)

Whoa! This brings to mind the difficulty Joe Torcivia had in scripting Scarpa's Treasure of Marco Topo, when he had to deal with the fact that in the story Mickey was understood to be a celebrity in Italy. (In Scarpa's mind it was obvious: Why is he a celebrity in Italy? Because everyone reads Topolino!) Sounds like the Italian comics do blur the line between the real world and Duckburg/Mouseton in ways we're not used to. As in, people in Mickey's (and Fethry's/Dickie's) world are actually reading Topolino!
First time I really noticed this kind of blurring in a Disney comic story I read in English was in the stories in which Carl Barks appeared as a character: The Man Who Drew Ducks (U$ 400) and to a lesser extent, Captain Duckburg (DD 363).
Of course, in Rosa's Duckburg they may read Mickey Mouse comics, but that's because Mickey Mouse is *not* real in Rosa's Duckburg. (In the "Super Snooper Strikes Again" the kids are reading "Marvin Monkey" comics, but I think in some other Rosa story there were Mickey comics in a store window display.) And they read DuckTales comics (see The Beagle Boys Vs. The Money Bin, bathroom scene), but that's because DuckTales in Rosa's Duckburg is a comic book (and perhaps a celebrity-inspired TV show; Rosa never put that in a comic but said he likes to think of the DuckTales series in that way) loosely inspired by Scrooge's life in the real world (the real world of Rosa's duck universe).

Heh. I remember this one Italian story where Black Pete travels back time to prevent that Mickey Mouse gets born. He tries to achieve this by seeking out Walt Disney (referred to as Polt Bisney here) and discouraging him from drawing mice. Walt Disney, despite being drawn as a human, lives in the same town surrounded by anthropomorphic dogs and ducks, but neither he nor Pete cause any raised eyebrows.

In another crossover story, Goofy and Mickey embark on a sightseeing tour from Mousetown to Duckburg on a helicopter, and end up helping Scrooge defend himself from someone after his money (as it turns out an alien "space babe" who is trying to go home whose spaceship uses diamonds as fuel). The pair get held up by police who accuse them of being accomplices of the mysterious diamond thief, but as soon as Mickey introduces himself:
"Oh, the famous Mickey Mouse? Why didn't you say so?"
"...You know me?
"Who doesn't? But what are you doing here?"

Clearly, a lot of fun was had with the 4th wall by the Italian writers. ;)

I agree that that name is not so fortunate. "Dickie" was probably created by a writer who assumed that her to be a one-shot character who'd never be seen again.

"Dália", the Hungarian name, by the way, was only used in a single publication, the local version of "Re P? peron e il tesoro delle 3 chiavi" http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+1974-AP, which as far as I know is her only Hungarian appearance. In the 2000s, the Donald Duck comics switched translators to a new group who are even capable of getting the regular characters' names wrong, so by now that name is probably completely forgotten. (Why on earth Egmont-Hungary decided that comics weren't worth skilled translators anymore for the past decade is a topic that does not belong here.)

Dalia X Fethry is a funny thought certainly, but I think Fethry's tastes in women are more...peculiar (just like his tastes are bizarre in everything else).

That Topolino appearance is fantastic , though. I think if the European characters were reintroduced in the US comics, a reporter + cameraman pair for Paeretta and Fethry could definitely work well.

And of course, I'm a fan of the "illegitimate granddaughter" fan myth as well. Why is it that the Duck world does not have the same amount of fanmade content as, say, My Little Pony currently has? Is it because it is older (from before the 'net), and/or Disney's protectiveness? If I saw just one fan made comic about Dickie, I would die happy.

Yeah, I'm quite fond of Fethry too. I think the best stories are the ones like "Paperino e la vacanza spaziale" http://coa.inducks.org/story.php?c=I+TL+1966-A where he rounds up Donald and Gladstone (who are normally enemies) into a trio. They have this nice dynamic where Donald is the eternal unlucky Average Joe, Gladstone is the high-class/ever fortunate one, and Fethry is the odd one. (He is also typically more athletic than the other two, and acts as a lightning rod during Donald-Gladstone quarrels.)

Dickie is a great name, fits perfectly. :) She should keep that name.
