Quote from user: Robb_KBarks did NOT give her an Italian accent, nor an Italian name. I don't believe he ever stated that she was an Itailan citizen, or even of Italian extraction (descent).
From Carl Barks: Conversations, ed. Donald Ault, p. 113:
"I thought at the time: Disney's always had witches who were ugly and repulsive--why shouldn't I draw one that's not ugly, but downright sexy? That's why she's Italian and, of course, very popular with readers in Italy."
He gave her a name that would read well for English-speaking readers.
I'm fine with her having no discernible accent, but if she has one, it should be Italian. Of course Barks didn't give her an Italian accent in print--that would have put her in the organ-grinder category. In animation, I'd want her to have an Italian lilt to her voice.

Quote from user: MatildaMagica's Russian accent just drives me crazy.
In french she had a german accent, just like the officers in old war movies. It was weird as well
Scrooge hadn't any accent - it would be difficult for us to recognize a scottish one or even some slang.

Quote from user: Thomps2525I'm not surprised that the new DuckTales series will be called DuckTales. In 1950 Disney released the animated film Cinderella...and this year's live-action remake is also titled Cinderella. In 1951 Disney released the animated film Alice In Wonderland...and the 2010 live-action version was also titled Alice In Wonderland. So.....another DuckTales.
The story from Entertainment Weekly magazine says that the new DuckTales series "will include appearances by Donald Duck" so apparently Donald will not be a regular character.
Well, yeah, if they're not going to have Donald, and are going to have Webby, Bubba and non-identical Beagle Boys, they can go right ahead and call it DuckTales.

...and while Magica's name is not authentically Italian, and while her dialogue isn't written in organ-grindese, I will note that her name is itself like a phrase in a stereotypically Italian-accented English. "I like the meatballs -> I like-a da meatballs."
A German accent, in the French DuckTales! That's a hoot. Guess the thinking (on both sides of the Atlantic) was: She's a foreign villain, we'll give her a foreign villain's accent.

I remember many Italian stories making a point that she is native Italian.
As far the new show goes, my main wishes :
1) To have the animation be hand drawn. The original DuckTales animation was pretty impressive at moments (the scene where Scrooge and El Capitain are escaping the temple in the opening) I hope they will put some effort into the backgrounds etc. I love "Gravity Falls" but animation style there is pretty simplistic and lacks the epic quality something like DuckTales had.
2) Don't retell same stories. Just start where the series ended.
3) Yes. Let's have more one-shot characters from original show return. Lunchpad's family is a nice idea but what's Cinnamon Teal or Philip Brushbill been up to?
4) More Gladstone please. Heck! Use this opportunity to finally have him meet Donald (and same voice actor please)
5) While I like Gizmoduck and don't mind Bubba I would hope the show will be more like the first season - Scrooge, HD&L adventuring around the world etc. Some Duckburg-center episodes once-a-while but I hope the focus will be on adventure
6) Few episodes base on Barks comics would be nice. "Voodoo-Whoodoo" and "Ancient Persia" comes to mind.

Quote from user: Matildaand (speaking of voices in animation!) an *Italian* accent for Magica. I'm willing to accept that DuckTales is in a parallel universe to the comic book Duckburg, but Magica's Russian accent just drives me crazy. It even keeps me from re-watching one of the all-time best episodes, Raiders of the Lost Harp. If they wanted a Russian villain, they should have invented one. Magica is Italian, dammit! End of rant.
For the time being, if you want to hear Magica with a Neapolitan accent (she is from Naples after all), go here (the voice actress is Sonia Scotti, and even though she is from Bari she does a perfect job with that accent). Too bad she says "decino portafortuna" ("lucky dime"), but I guess it can't be helped, since she also says that in the original dub.

I heartily second this. Gladstone is essentially a foil to Donald, and is not a particularly interesting character without him as a counterbalance. The portrayal of Gladstone's insufferable good luck is most effective when contrasted with Donald's perpetual misfortune. As a standalone characteristic, it seems to fall flat (Gladstone would have been a great addition to Quack Pack, which centered around Donald). IMHO, the original DuckTales series got Gladstone horribly wrong in the few instances where they used him, portraying his relationship with Scrooge as almost warm, and completely toning down his conceit and arrogance. He was almost likeable!
As for Gladstone's voice ... there was nothing special about it in DuckTales, I wouldn't mind if they kept it or went in another direction, personally.
And while we're talking about what we'd like to see on the new series .... I vote for those classic comic characters who never made it into the show the first time around, like Grandma and Gus, Neighbor Jones, Bolivar, and yes, even Fethry. And maybe, finally, a Rosa-compatible version of Scrooge's family of origin?

Quote from user: deyanmegaraLet's hope they keep the Carl Barks spirit the original series had.
That's an overstatement if I ever saw one. My main problem with the original DuckTales series is how much it deviates from the brilliant characterisations and storylines by Carl Barks, even when episode plots are directly adapted from his comics. In almost all cases where the inspiration from Barks is directly visible, the DuckTales version feels dumbed down and one-dimensional in comparison to Barks's comic-book stories.

Mr. M, I'm in almost total agreement with you, except that I *do* mind Bubba. Making Bubba a continuing character was a huge mistake. Yes, bring back Cinnamon Teal and Philip Brushbill! Baar Baar Jinx, it's hard for me to imagine Bolivar living at Scrooge's mansion, and neighbor Jones also seems to demand Donald's living at home...but I'd support including Fethry *and* Belle Duck. (Loopy, Cinnamon Teal, Belle Duck...now we're getting somewhere, in terms of a more gender-balanced cast.) Fethry, like Gladstone, needs to play off Donald, but Belle Duck could easily be introduced into the Scrooge-and-HDL-centered DuckTales scenario. Grandma Duck and Gus are fine with me, but introducing Grandma Duck might raise the question in some viewers' minds of why the boys are staying with their great-uncle rather than their equally spry great-grandmother, who would seem a more likely guardian.
And clinton coot, thanks for the link to Magica speaking Neapolitan-accented Italian!

It was a pleasure. Also, in the Italian version Poe was called Gennarino, the same name used in the comics for Ratface*, even though the dialogues that referred to him as Magica's brother were kept. Poe-Gennarino also speaks with a Neapolitan accent, but I can't identify the voice actor.
*A similar thing happened with Mrs. Featherby, called Miss Paperett (Italian name of Miss Quackfaster), but only in some episodes.

Agreed, but again, I think we're still unsure about whether this new series will stick to the HD&L-living-in-Scrooge's-mansion setup of the original series, or the more Barksian scenario that includes Donald as a regular. We seem to be getting contradictory information about that. I'd like to think the producers of the new show will be free to make changes to the original series as they update the stories "for the present", and Donald has enjoyed something of a resurgence in popularity since the original DuckTales show (through Quack Pack and the new Mickey Mouse shorts), so many of the concerns we've been told led to his exclusion the first time around, as discussed on other threads on this forum (uncertainty whether a TV series with him would do well, trouble getting the "rights" to use him as a main character) may no longer be as pressing. As to his voice, we've discussed that elsewhere in detail too, but I can see a situation where Donald tags along and speaks minimally, being more of a pantomime type of character whose main contribution is by way of physical comedy. Maybe not truly Barksian, but better than excluding him completely. And if the nephews still live with Donald, then Bolivar, Jones, Gladstone and Fethry can have a prominent role ... and surely not every episode needs to focus on Scrooge?

Some might ask why they even live with Donald, rather than Grandma. The Donald and HD&L relationship, as portrayed in the classic cartoons and several Barks ten-pagers, doesn't always seem entirely healthy. I guess it's always been that way, so it's a question of what we're accustomed to. The "why Scrooge and not Grandma" question is probably something only comic fanatics like most of us on this board would worry about.

I prefer to have no big expectations about the new series, it's the best way not to be disappointed :) I'm glad Disney is still interested by the character(s), curious about the way they'll do it (cg ? Half-Flash like the latest Mickey shorts ? Fully traditional ?). I agree they should tell us brand new stories, not the ones we already know ("but the public at large don't know them !"). I'd like to be surprised, like I was 28 years ago. Maybe a treatment la Batman Animated ? Respectful of the comics but still new. Until then I'll wait and see !

I grow up on Italian stories where Gladstone is more sympathetic then Barks version, much more closer to "Duck Tales" reincarnation so maybe this is why I don't mind this version (to be fair they "soften' Gladstone sam way they soften Scrooge) I think Scrooge vs. Gladstone stories can be interesting as well (the "It's all about hard work vs. good luck")
Quote from user: Baar Baar JinxAs for Gladstone's voice ... there was nothing special about it in DuckTales, I wouldn't mind if they kept it or went in another direction, personally.
I found it perfect for the character, even if years latter I realize it's the same voice as Gusto from "Gummi Bears".

I would like if they did something similar to Inspector Gadget reboot, where they at first ignore the character of Brain the dog but then they made surprise episode when Brain made a guest return and they gave a funny back story where he went. It would be nice if they would bring back less popular characters (Bubba, Doofus) this way.

Do kids this day truly don't know "Duck Tales"? I grow up in 90's knowing plenty of shows from 80's, 70's and 60's (and even going as far as traditional Disney, Fleischer and Warner Brother shorts) thanks to the magic of TV reruns. Kids this day have plenty new stuff but access to tons of old stuff.
To be fair all they they have to do is not do episodes depending on knowing old episodes (without references like "Hey Uncle Scrooge this is just like the time Magica turn the Beagle Boys into our clones"), just maybe a quick "mythology gag" (see tv tropes) here and there and it will be fine.
It would be great if they would bring back some of the same writing stuff but maybe this is asking for a bit too much?
